Abstract

Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes are an important class of LDPC codes which can be encoded and decoded with low complexity and suitable for many applications. As the code dimension, which describes the number of protected information bits, is equal to the code length minus the rank of the parity-check matrix and the parity-check matrix for QC-LDPC codes is usually not full-rank, determining the rank of the parity-check matrix is of essential importance. In this paper, we study the rank of the parity-check matrix for QC-LDPC codes based on the associated polynomials for circulant matrices. A formula for the rank of the parity-check matrix with only one row-block is first derived. We then extend the result to matrices with two, three, or more row-blocks. Some bounds are also presented for matrices with arbitrary numbers of row-blocks. Furthermore, the exact rank is determined for a class of algebraically constructed parity-check matrices.

Rank Analysis and Its Applications for Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Po‐Chun Yang, Chung-Hsuan Wang, Chi-chao Chao

In this paper, we develop a new approach for rank analysis of parity-check matrices for quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes based on the associated polynomials of circulant matrices, applicable to general finite fields and arbitrary circulant sizes. Some formulas on the rank for parity-check matrices with one, two, and three row-blocks are first derived. For the general case with arbitrary numbers of row-blocks, lower and upper bounds on the rank are presented, and these bounds can be combined to give the exact rank result under certain conditions. We also investigate the effect on the rank by changing the circulant size. Furthermore, we study the relations between the rank of the masked matrix and that of the masking matrix, which can be used to predict the rank of the parity-check matrix after masking. The obtained rank analysis results are then applied to several classes of existing algebraically constructed parity-check matrices, along with their masked matrices. Finally, we demonstrate how rank analysis can be used in the code design procedure.

Structural Analysis of Generalized Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes: Rank, Design, and Generator Matrices

Roxana Smarandache, David G. M. Mitchell, Anthony Gómez-Fonseca

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check constraints on the code bits are replaced with generalized constraints (an arbitrary linear code), are a promising class of codes for low-latency communication. The block error rate performance of the GLDPC codes, combined with a complementary outer code, has been shown to outperform a variety of state-of-the-art code and decoder designs with suitable lengths and rates for the 5G ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) regime. A major drawback of these codes is that it is not known how to construct appropriate polynomial matrices to encode them efficiently. In this paper, we analyze practical constructions of quasi-cyclic GLDPC (QC-GLDPC) codes and show how to construct polynomial generator matrices in various forms using minors of the polynomial matrix. The approach can be applied to fully generalized matrices or partially generalized (with mixed constraint node types) to find better performance/rate trade-offs. The resulting encoding matrices are presented in useful forms that facilitate efficient implementation. The rich substructure displayed also provides us with new methods of determining low weight codewords, providing lower and upper bounds on the minimum distance and often giving those of weight equal to the minimum distance. Based on the minors of the polynomial parity-check matrix, we also give a formula for the rank of any parity-check matrix representing a QC-LDPC or QC-GLDPC code, and hence, the dimension of the code. Finally, we show that by applying double graph-liftings, the code parameters can be improved without affecting the ability to obtain a polynomial generator matrix.

Using Minors to Construct Generator Matrices for Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes

Roxana Smarandache, Anthony Gómez-Fonseca, David G. M. Mitchell

This paper gives a simple method to construct generator matrices with polynomial entries (and hence offers an alternative encoding method to the one commonly used) for all quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes, even for those that are rank deficient. The approach is based on constructing a set of codewords with the desired total rank by using minors of the parity-check matrix. We exemplify the method on several well-known and standard codes. Moreover, we explore the connections between the minors of the parity-check matrix and the known upper bound on minimum distance and provide a method to compute the rank of any parity-check matrix representing a QC-LDPC code, and hence the dimension of the code, by using the minors of the corresponding polynomial parity-check matrix.

Design of good quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xu Dan

The existing design of quasi-cyclic(QC) low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes has not considered the problems of short length girths and the rows' dependency. The first problem leads to the BER performance of QC LDPC codes to be much poorer than that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the second problem leads to the difficulty of construction of generator matrices from parity-check matrices. To solve the first problem, the constraint conditions for designing the QC LDPC codes are proposed, and the dimension and shift factors of the circulant matrices of the given sparse parity-check matrix are adjusted according to the test results of both girth 4 and girth 6.To solve the second problem,an approach of irregular QC LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed approach is to replace some sub-matrices by zero matrices and identity matrices at special positions in the given sparse parity-check matrix so as to get a nonsingular square matrix for the construction of the generator matrix.Though adopting bidiagonal submatrices in parity-check matrix can solve the rows' dependency problem, many code words with low weights will occur, which leads to the BER performance can not be better by increasing code lengths.Examples are provided for the proposed design of QC LDPC codes, and computer simulation results show that the proposed QC LDPC codes achieve good BER performance.

Quasi-cyclic LDPC codes for fast encoding

Seho Myung, Kyeongcheol Yang, Jaeyoel Kim

In this correspondence we present a special class of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes, called block-type LDPC (B-LDPC) codes, which have an efficient encoding algorithm due to the simple structure of their parity-check matrices. Since the parity-check matrix of a QC-LDPC code consists of circulant permutation matrices or the zero matrix, the required memory for storing it can be significantly reduced, as compared with randomly constructed LDPC codes. We show that the girth of a QC-LDPC code is upper-bounded by a certain number which is determined by the positions of circulant permutation matrices. The B-LDPC codes are constructed as irregular QC-LDPC codes with parity-check matrices of an almost lower triangular form so that they have an efficient encoding algorithm, good noise threshold, and low error floor. Their encoding complexity is linearly scaled regardless of the size of circulant permutation matrices.

LDPC Block and Convolutional Codes Based on Circulant Matrices

R. Michael Tanner, Deepak Sridhara, Arvind Sridharan +2 more

A class of algebraically structured quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and their convolutional counterparts is presented. The QC codes are described by sparse parity-check matrices comprised of blocks of circulant matrices. The sparse parity-check representation allows for practical graph-based iterative message-passing decoding. Based on the algebraic structure, bounds on the girth and minimum distance of the codes are found, and several possible encoding techniques are described. The performance of the QC LDPC block codes compares favorably with that of randomly constructed LDPC codes for short to moderate block lengths. The performance of the LDPC convolutional codes is superior to that of the QC codes on which they are based; this performance is the limiting performance obtained by increasing the circulant size of the base QC code. Finally, a continuous decoding procedure for the LDPC convolutional codes is described.
