Manifestation of multimode radiation structure in many-photon resonant absorption

Abstract

An analysis is made of the influence of the multimode structure of the radiation of a real laser on resonant many-photon processes (absorption of light and ionization of atoms). It is shown that the presence of many modes results in a radical modification of the absorption line profiles and in considerable changes of the frequency dependence of the ion yield (in the ionization case).

The influence of radiation coherence effects on the resonant ionization multiphoton process in a multimode laser is studied for the case when Gaussian statistics are applicable. It is shown how this influence depends on the relative field couplings of the two transitions.

Influence of spatial coherence of a laser field on the efficiency of two-photon absorption

Tatiana N. Smirnova, Eugene A. Tikhonov

An investigation was made of the dependence of the two-photon absorption of ruby laser radiation in alcohol solutions of rhodamine 6 G on the intensity of the exciting field in the case of single-frequency emission and emission of a large number of transverse modes. The efficiency of the two-photon absorption in the case of multimode excitation was 1.8 times (determined with a relative error of 25 % ) greater than the efficiency of the absorption as a result of single-frequency excitation. The measured absorption coefficient was close to that calculated on the assumption that the single-frequency field was spatially coherent and the spatial fluctuations of the multimode field were described by a Gaussian distribution.

Line-profile considerations of resonant multiphoton ionization

S. N. Dixit, P. Lambropoulos

It is shown that the interpretation of the line profile of resonant multiphoton ionization in terms of a Fano profile with a constant background can lead to difficulties. These difficulties are related to the fact that the nonresonant background may exhibit considerable structure as a function of photon frequency.

SPECTROSCOPY OF ATOMS IN A STRONG LASER FIELD: NEW METHOD TO SENSING AC STARK EFFECT, MULTIPHOTON RESONANCES PARAMETERS AND IONIZATION CROSS-SECTIONS

В. В. Буяджи, О. В. Глушков, Valery F. Mansarliysky +2 more

The resonant multiphoton resonances shifts and widths and ionization cross-sections for multielectron atoms in a intense laser radiation field are studied. It is carried out a new consistent approach to atom in a strong realistic laser field, based on the relativistic energy formalism (S-matrix adiabatic formalism), relativistic Dirac equation Green function method and relativistic many-body perturbation theory with the Dirac-Kohn-Sham zeroth approximation. In relativistic theory, the Gell-Mann and Low adiabatic formula for energy shift is connected with electrodynamical scattering matrice, which includes interaction with as a laser field as a photon vacuum field (radiative decay). The optimized basis of the relativistic orbitals is generated with using a minimization procedure for the gauge-non-invariant contribution (the fourth-order of the QED perturbation theory) to the radiation width of atomic state. An approach to treating the multiphoton atomic processes is outlined on example of H, Cs, Kr,Mg etc. Analysis shows that the shift and width of the multi-photon resonance line for the interaction “atom- multimode laser pulse” is greater than the corresponding shift and width for a case of the “atom- single-mode pulse” (the Lorenz pulse model) interaction. From the physical point of view it is naturally provided by action of the photon-correlation effects and influence of the laser pulse multi-modity.

Multimode and level-degeneracy effects in two-step resonant photoionization processes

C. S. Chang

A theoretical model of two-step resonant ionization which includes an autoionizing state is developed. The effects examined include interactions with a multimode laser and Zeeman and hyperfine multiplets. We approach this problem starting from first principles by treating the atom-radiation system as a unit. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculations of ionization probabilities are given. The intermode scattering is investigated in detail, and a simple physical interpretation of the dynamical effect is given. Comparisons of ionization probabilities for two-step processes with first-step excitations by single-mode or two-mode lasers are made. It is found that, if the mode spacing in a multimode-laser beam is less than the Doppler width of the atom, the multimode laser can more effectively produce ions than a single-mode laser does. This leads to the conclusion that the resonance effect is more important than the power-broadening effect. This is shown to be also true when Zeeman and hyperfine multiplets are included.

Influence of the Stark effect on multiphoton ionization of atoms when the dynamic polarizability depends strongly on the laser frequency

І. І. Бондар, В. В. Суран

The influence of the Stark effect on multiphoton ionization of Ba atoms under conditions when the dynamic polarizability depends strongly on the frequency of the laser radiation is investigated. It is found that for some electric field strengths ε of the laser radiation this effect gives rise to resonance peaks in the Ba + ion yield as a function of the laser radiation frequency at frequencies corresponding to single-photon transitions between the excited states. These frequencies can differ substantially from the frequencies corresponding to the conventional multiphoton excitation of these states from the ground states of the atoms. Peaks in the ion yield as a function of ε behave differently from the conventional Stark effect—their position on the frequency scale does not depend strongly on ε . The conditions under which such an induced resonance structure appears are determined.
