Frequency measurement using Rayleigh scattering from a BEC

Abstract

We propose to use superradiant Rayleigh scattering from degenerate Bose gas to detect unknown frequencies coupled to the pump laser beam. Theoretically we show a measurement of the time evolution of population at the initial momentum state could determine the unknown frequency with respect to a known one at which the pump laser's frequency modulates. We show a range of frequencies from kHz to MHz could be determined with this method at the currently available state-of-the-art technology.

We propose a new way of detecting frequencies using superradiant Rayleigh scattering from degenerate Bose gases. A measurement of the time evolution of population at the initial momentum state could determine an unknown frequency with respect to a known one at which the pump laser's frequency modulates. A range of frequencies from kHz to MHz could be determined with a fractional uncertainty of 10^{-6}.

High-order momentum modes by resonant superradiant scattering

Xiaoji Zhou, Jiageng Fu, Xuzong Chen

The spatial and time evolutions of superradiant scattering are studied theoretically for a weak pump beam with different frequency components traveling along the long axis of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. Resulting from the analysis for mode competition between the different resonant channels and the local depletion of the spatial distribution in the superradiant Rayleigh scattering, a method of getting a large number of high-order forward modes by resonant frequency components of the pump beam is provided, which is beneficial to a lager momentum transfer in atom manipulation for the atom interferometry and atomic optics.

Experimental study on superradiant light scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate

L. Fallani, C. Fort, F. S. Cataliotti +1 more

The non-equilibrium dynamics of the superradiant scattering of light from a BEC is experimentally investigated by monitoring the time evolution of the population in the condensate. In the experiment, a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate of /sup 87/Rb atoms is produced and is exposed to a single off-resonant laser pulse directed along the condensate symmetry axis. The superradiant back-scattering of light creates a matter wave pulse moving in the same direction of the laser beam at twice the photon recoil velocity with respect to the original condensate. The efficiency of the process is limited by decoherence between the two atomic spatially overlapped wavepackets. The temporal evolution of the condensate observed in the experiment as well as the results of a simple semiclassical model in which the condensate is described by a density operator for the motional states. The population of the two matter wavepackets as a function of the light pulse duration is reported, together with the experimental points with the analytical formula resulting from the theory of collective atomic recoil laser (CARL).

Spectroscopy of strong-pulse superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Nir Bar‐Gill, Eitan E. Rowen, Nir Davidson

We study experimentally superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate using a two-frequency pump beam. By controlling the frequency difference between the beam components, we measure the spectrum of the backward (energy-mismatched) superradiant atomic modes. In addition, we show that the populations of these modes display coherent time dynamics. These results are compared to a semiclassical model based on coupled Schr\"odinger-Maxwell equations.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of light by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rarefied atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

The superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity light pulses by the Bose-Einstein condensate of rubidium vapor is studied using the model proposed earlier. It is demonstrated that four states with a certain momentum are occupied under the experimental conditions (two states correspond to the forward recoil and two others correspond to the backward recoil). Condensate pulsations between the zero-momentum state and the above states are detected and studied. The corresponding shape of the coherent Rayleigh pulse is found.

Controlling Decoherence in Bose-Einstein Condensation by Light Scattering far off Resonance

Che Sun

It is shown that, through a super-radiant Rayleigh scattering, a strong far off-resonant pump laser applied to a Bose-Einstein condensates(BEC) can induce a non-demolition coupling of the many-mode quantized vacuum field to the BEC. This effective interaction will force the total system of the BEC plus the light field to evolve from a factorized initial state to an ideal entangled state and thus result in the quantum decoherence in the BEC. Since the effective coupling coefficients are mainly determined by the Rabi frequency of the pump laser, the quantum decoherence process can be controlled by adjusting the intensity of the pump laser. To study the physical influence of decoherence on the BEC, we investigate how the coherent tunneling of BEC in a well-separated tight double wall is suppressed by the effectively-entangled vacuum modes.
