High-order momentum modes by resonant superradiant scattering

Abstract

The spatial and time evolutions of superradiant scattering are studied theoretically for a weak pump beam with different frequency components traveling along the long axis of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. Resulting from the analysis for mode competition between the different resonant channels and the local depletion of the spatial distribution in the superradiant Rayleigh scattering, a method of getting a large number of high-order forward modes by resonant frequency components of the pump beam is provided, which is beneficial to a lager momentum transfer in atom manipulation for the atom interferometry and atomic optics.

Superradiant Rayleigh Scattering from a Bose-Einstein Condensate

S. Inouye, A. P. Chikkatur, Dan Stamper-Kurn +3 more

Rayleigh scattering off a Bose-Einstein condensate was studied. Exposing an elongated condensate to a single off-resonant laser beam resulted in the observation of highly directional scattering of light and atoms. This collective light scattering is caused by the coherent center-of-mass motion of the atoms in the condensate. A directional beam of recoiling atoms was built up by matter wave amplification.

Dynamics of matter-wave and optical fields in superradiant scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

O. Zobay, Georgios M. Nikolopoulos

We study superradiant scattering off Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the semiclassical Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations describing the coupled dynamics of matter-wave and optical fields. Taking the spatial dependence of these fields along the condensate axis into account, we are able to reproduce and explain many of the characteristic features observed in the experiments of Inouye et al. [Science 285, 571 (1999)] and Schneble et al. [Science 300, 475 (2003)], such as the shape of the atomic side-mode distributions for forward and backward scattering, the spatial asymmetry between forward and backward side modes, and the depletion of the condensate center observed for forward scattering.

Resonant sequential scattering in two-frequency-pumping superradiance from a Bose-Einstein condensate

F. Yang, Xiaoji Zhou, Juntao Li +3 more

We study sequential scattering in superradiance from a Bose-Einstein condensate pumped by a two-frequency laser beam. We find that the distribution of atomic side modes presents highly different patterns for various frequency difference between the two pump components. These observations reveal that the frequency overlap between the end-fire modes related to different side modes plays an essential role in the dynamics of sequential superradiant scattering. The numerical results from a semiclassical model qualitatively agree with our observations.

Observation of superradiant Raman scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Yutaka Yoshikawa, Toshiaki Sugiura, Yoshio Torii +1 more

We observed superradiant Raman scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate irradiated by a single off-resonant light beam. Spontaneous mode selection of the scattered radiation turns probabilistic optical pumping into a stimulated Raman process, whereby the atoms are coherently transferred into a different hyperfine state. The population in the pumped state grew exponentially in time, demonstrating the emergence of bosonic stimulation in the optical pumping process.

Spatial effects in superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

O. Zobay, Georgios M. Nikolopoulos

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. A thorough investigation of the spatially resolved time evolution of optical and matter-wave fields is performed in the framework of the semiclassical Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations. Our theory is not only able to explain many of the known experimental observations, e.g., the behavior of the atomic side-mode distributions, but also provides further detailed insights into the coupled dynamics of optical and matter-wave fields. To work out the significance of propagation effects, we compare our results to other theoretical models in which these effects are neglected.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

Equations of a semiclassical model of superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases are solved numerically taking into account the excitation of atoms by coherent Rayleigh radiation and their recoil in the backward direction. The evolution of the populations of coherent atomic states with a particular momentum is studied, and the pulse shape and the structure of the spectrum of such scattering are found in relation to the laser beam intensity and the recoil kinetic energy of atoms.
