Abstract

We study sequential scattering in superradiance from a Bose-Einstein condensate pumped by a two-frequency laser beam. We find that the distribution of atomic side modes presents highly different patterns for various frequency difference between the two pump components. These observations reveal that the frequency overlap between the end-fire modes related to different side modes plays an essential role in the dynamics of sequential superradiant scattering. The numerical results from a semiclassical model qualitatively agree with our observations.

Sequential superradiant scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

O. Zobay, Georgios M. Nikolopoulos

We theoretically discuss several aspects of sequential superradiant scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Our treatment is based on the semiclassical description of the process in terms of the Maxwell-Schrödinger equations for coupled matter-wave and optical fields. First, we investigate sequential scattering in the weak-pulse regime and work out the essential mechanisms responsible for bringing about the characteristic fan-shaped side-mode distribution patterns. Second, we discuss the transition between the Kapitza-Dirac and Bragg regimes of sequential scattering in the strong-pulse regime. Finally, we consider the situation where superradiance is initiated by coherently populating an atomic side mode through Bragg diffraction, as in studies of matter-wave amplification, and describe the effect on the sequential scattering process.

Spectroscopy of strong-pulse superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Nir Bar‐Gill, Eitan E. Rowen, Nir Davidson

We study experimentally superradiance in a Bose-Einstein condensate using a two-frequency pump beam. By controlling the frequency difference between the beam components, we measure the spectrum of the backward (energy-mismatched) superradiant atomic modes. In addition, we show that the populations of these modes display coherent time dynamics. These results are compared to a semiclassical model based on coupled Schr\"odinger-Maxwell equations.

High-order momentum modes by resonant superradiant scattering

Xiaoji Zhou, Jiageng Fu, Xuzong Chen

The spatial and time evolutions of superradiant scattering are studied theoretically for a weak pump beam with different frequency components traveling along the long axis of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. Resulting from the analysis for mode competition between the different resonant channels and the local depletion of the spatial distribution in the superradiant Rayleigh scattering, a method of getting a large number of high-order forward modes by resonant frequency components of the pump beam is provided, which is beneficial to a lager momentum transfer in atom manipulation for the atom interferometry and atomic optics.

Imprinting light phase on matter-wave gratings in superradiance scattering

Xiaoji Zhou, F. Yang, Xuguang Yue +2 more

Superradiance scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied with a two-frequency pumping beam. We demonstrate the possibility of fully tuning the backward mode population as a function of the locked initial relative phase between the two frequency components of the pumping beam. This result comes from an imprinting of this initial relative phase on two matter wave gratings, formed by the forward mode or backward mode condensate plus the condensate at rest so cooperative scattering is affected. A numerical simulation using a semiclassical model agrees with our observations.

Classical and quantum description of the atomic motion in superradiant light scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

N. Piovella, M. Gatelli, L Martinucci +3 more

A theory of coherent light scattering from an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate exposed to an off-resonant laser beam is presented. The model describes the emission of two superradiant pulses along the sample's major axis simultaneous with the formation of a bidimensional atomic grating inside the sample, as was observed in a recent MIT experiment [Inouye, S. et al., 1999, Science, 285, 571]. We predictions of the semiclassical model, in which the atomic motion is treated classically, are compared with these of the quantum model, obtained including the quantum mechanical description of the atomic motion. In the quantum limit the superradiant regime becomes a sequential process, in which during each collective scattering atoms emit a it hyperbolic secant pulse and populate an adjacent momentum state.

Rayleigh superradiance and dynamic Bragg gratings in an end-pumped Bose-Einstein condensate

Andrew J. Hilliard, Franziska Kaminski, Rodolphe Le Targat +3 more

We study superradiant Rayleigh scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a parameter regime where pump depletion and the exchange of photons between the end-fire modes are important. Through experiments and simulations, we show that collective atom-light coupling leads to the self-organized formation of dynamic Bragg gratings within the sample. These gratings lead to an efficient backscattering of pump photons and optical resonator structures within the BEC.
