Abstract

The interaction of a linear polarized weak probe wave with the molecular iodine driven by the strong pump wave with the orthogonal polarization is experimentally studied. An effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed. The group velocity of the probe wave is decreased to 0,13c.

Nonlinear effects in the interaction of elliptically polarized laser radiation with a strong absorbing molecular gas

V. I. Romanenko, Yelena G. Udovitskaya, Ruslan A. Malitskiy +1 more

The interaction of circularly polarized weak probe wave with the molecular iodine driven by the strong pump wave with the opposite polarization has been theoretically studied. It is shown that the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency in the iodine vapour can be observed for moderate intensity (~10-100 W/cm2) of the pump wave. The group velocity of the probe wave can decrease to 0.1c.

Nonlinear properties of electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium vapor

Dmitry Strekalov, Andrey B. Matsko, Lute Maleki

Nonlinear properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with respect to a weak probe light are studied. We observe EIT in a rubidium vapor, measure the slow light group velocity and the EIT resonance width, and find that those parameters show a strong dependence on the probe power. We theoretically study the influence of the EIT probe dependence on the performance of the EIT-based optical delay lines and magnetometers.

Theoretical investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a crystal of molecular magnets

Alexey V. Shvetsov, G. A. Vugalter, A. I. Grebeneva

The elimination of the absorption of a weak electromagnetic wave in a three-level atomic system in the presence of a strong resonant electromagnetic wave is well known in optics. This effect is termed electromagnetically induced transparency. We have theoretically investigated this effect in a crystal of molecular magnets. The crystal is subject to two (weak and strong) resonant magnetic fields. We discuss the choice of polarization of the magnetic fields. The influence of the distribution of the longitudinal anisotropy constant and the Land\'e factor on the manifestation of electromagnetically induced transparency has been studied. The amplitude of the strong field required for observation of the effect has been estimated.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a Λ-type molecular system with permanent dipole moments revisited

Niharika Singh, Q. V. Lawande, Richard D’Souza +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a molecular three-level Λ system with permanent dipole moments and undergoing m- and n-photon transitions by pump and probe lasers is investigated. Analytical expressions are derived for probe absorption spectrum and dispersion for a medium of stationary as well as thermal molecules. Contrary to the earlier study by Zhou et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 034105 (2009)], we observe no amplification in 2 + 2 photon process when the sign of the difference of the permanent moments of the excited and the ground levels is reversed. Reasons for these contrasting observations are discussed. Our study shows that the permanent moments essentially damp the laser-molecule Rabi frequency to result in narrower EIT line width and larger group velocity index. These effects are further enhanced when the order of the multi-photon process is increased. The importance of the virtual mechanism is discussed by considering the special case of 2 + 1 photon EIT.

Enhancement of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Room Temperature Alkali Metal Vapor1

O. S. Mishinaa

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has led to several quantum optics effects such as lasing without inversion or squeezed light generation. More recently quantum memories based on EIT have been experimentally implemented in different systems such as alkali metal atoms. In this system the excited state of the optical transition splits into several sublevels due to the hyperfine interaction. However, most of the theoretical models used to describe the experimental results are based on a system with only one excited state. In this article, we present a theoretical model for the type interaction of two light, fields and an atomic system with multiple excited state. In particular we show that if the control and probe fields are orthogonally circularly polarized the EIT effect in an alkali metal vapor can almost disappears. We also iden tify the reasons of this reduction and propose a method to recover the transparency via velocity selective opti cal pumping. On the polarization rotation by means of electromagnetically induced transparency

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract The limitations on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) imposed by the degeneracy of atomic levels are considered. The dependence of the EIT-induced polarization rotation of the weak probe field on the characteristics of the resonant transitions and that of the control field is studied. The conditions for the 90 ∘ -rotation without absorption are discussed.
