Abstract

The problem of Interference Stabilization of Rydberg atoms is considered. Two kinds of Raman-type transitions can be responsible for the effect: L-type transitions via the continuum and V-type transitions via lower resonant atomic levels. The main distinctions between L- and V- stabilization are described. The conditions under which each of these two effects can exist are found and discussed.

Stabilization of a Rydberg atom and competition between the Λ and V transition channels

Н. П. Полуэктов, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

The photoionization and stabilization of a Rydberg atom in a strong laser field are investigated theoretically. The role of Raman-type transitions between neighboring Rydberg levels via the continuum (Λ transitions) and via lower-energy resonant Rydberg levels ( V transitions) is analyzed. The conditions under which this phenomenon can be observed experimentally are determined. The characteristics of stabilization due to V -type transitions are described.

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms induced by a strong laser field

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

Interference stabilization of atoms is discussed. Raman-type transitions to Rydberg states with higher values of the electron orbital momentum l are taken into account in numerical calculations. These transitions are shown to change qualitatively theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of the time of ionization ti on the light field-strength amplitude (epsilon) 0: the time of ionization is shown to be a falling function of (epsilon) 0 in the weak-field region and, then, in a rather large interval of (epsilon) 0, to be approximately constant. The results derived are shown to be in a rather good agreement with the existing experiments.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Two-color interference stabilization of atoms

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Н. П. Полуэктов

The effect of interference stabilization is shown to exist in a system of two atomic levels coupled by a strong two-color laser field, the two frequencies of which are close to a two-photon Raman-type resonance between the chosen levels, with open channels of one-photon ionization from both of them. We suggest an experiment, in which a rather significant (up to $90%$) suppression of ionization can take place and which demonstrates explicitly the interference origin of stabilization. Specific calculations are made for H and He atoms and optimal parameters of a two-color field are found. The physics of the effect and its relation with such well-known phenomena as light induced continuum structure and population trapping in a three-level system are discussed.

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms: numerical calculations and physical models

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, M-M Tehranchi, S M Fedorov

Interference stabilization of atoms is investigated numerically. Raman-type transitions to Rydberg states with higher values of the electron orbital momentum are taken into account. These transitions are shown to change qualitatively theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of the time of ionization on the light-field-strength amplitude : if the weak-field time of ionization, as usual, is a falling function of , in a strong-field region the function is predicted to be more or less constant and of the order of the classical Kepler period in a rather large interval of , in contrast with the earlier prediction according to which, in a strong field, was assumed to be a rather fast growing function. The results derived are shown to be in a rather good agreement with the existing experiments. Alternative theoretical models are discussed.

Mechanisms of stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong light field

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

The main ideas and features of strong-field interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms are described. Both analytical and model calculations, as well as exact numerical solutions of the Schördinger equation are discussed and compared with each other. Experiments of the FOM Institute groups (The Netherlands) on stabilization of Ba and Ne atoms excited initially, correspondingly, to 27d and 5g levels are discussed. In both cases mechanisms of stabilization are argued in favor of different kinds of interference phenomena rather than adiabatic stabilization.
