Mechanisms of stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong light field

Abstract

The main ideas and features of strong-field interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms are described. Both analytical and model calculations, as well as exact numerical solutions of the Schördinger equation are discussed and compared with each other. Experiments of the FOM Institute groups (The Netherlands) on stabilization of Ba and Ne atoms excited initially, correspondingly, to 27d and 5g levels are discussed. In both cases mechanisms of stabilization are argued in favor of different kinds of interference phenomena rather than adiabatic stabilization.

Interference Stabilization in Atoms and Molecules

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

The existing theoretical and experimental works on interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms are overviewed. Physical origin of the phenomenon, its main features and the conditions of existence, as well as the main theoretical approaches used for its description are discussed. These ideas are used to describe interference stabilization of molecules with respect to photodissociation. Specific calculations are carried out for the hydrogen molecular ion H2+. The main features of strong‐field photodissociation are described. The conditions of stabilization and destabilization of a molecule are found and related to features of the initial‐state molecular vibrational wave function.

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms: numerical calculations and physical models

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, M-M Tehranchi, S M Fedorov

Interference stabilization of atoms is investigated numerically. Raman-type transitions to Rydberg states with higher values of the electron orbital momentum are taken into account. These transitions are shown to change qualitatively theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of the time of ionization on the light-field-strength amplitude : if the weak-field time of ionization, as usual, is a falling function of , in a strong-field region the function is predicted to be more or less constant and of the order of the classical Kepler period in a rather large interval of , in contrast with the earlier prediction according to which, in a strong field, was assumed to be a rather fast growing function. The results derived are shown to be in a rather good agreement with the existing experiments. Alternative theoretical models are discussed.

Interference Stabilization Revisited

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Nikolai P. Poluektov, A. M. Popov +3 more

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a sufficiently strong laser field is revisited. Its main features predicted theoretically and observed experimentally are described together with the newest experimental and theoretical results. The most important new results concern the found efficient population of atomic Rydberg levels in the process of multiphoton ionization and interference stabilization of population at Rydberg levels. Another important new topic is the interference stabilization at vibrational levels of dissociating molecules.

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong laser field and phase locking of an array of cavities: Common properties of the phenomena

Victor V. Apollonov, Sergei I. Derzhavin, Victor I. Kislov +3 more

A description of the common properties for different phenomena is presented: interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong electromagnetic field and phase locking of an array of cavities. A comparison of master equations is held for the discussed effects. Analytical expressions for basic parameters of the problems involved are used for quantitative analysis. The analogy established is exploited for the interpretation of a decrease in intracavity losses in the system of two coupled cavities with an increase of the extent of mutual coupling at a slight detuning of the cavity lengths. The expediency of the analogy establishment consists of existing difficulties in experimental confirmation of the principles of Rydberg-atom stabilization.

Interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms induced by a strong laser field

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

Interference stabilization of atoms is discussed. Raman-type transitions to Rydberg states with higher values of the electron orbital momentum l are taken into account in numerical calculations. These transitions are shown to change qualitatively theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of the time of ionization ti on the light field-strength amplitude (epsilon) 0: the time of ionization is shown to be a falling function of (epsilon) 0 in the weak-field region and, then, in a rather large interval of (epsilon) 0, to be approximately constant. The results derived are shown to be in a rather good agreement with the existing experiments.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Coherence and interference in a Rydberg atom in a strong laser field: excitation, ionization, and emission of light

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Misha Ivanov

Excitation and photoionization of Rydberg wave packets are described. Interference of bound-free transitions from many coherently populated Rydberg levels is shown to affect the dependence of the photoionization probability on the duration of interaction. Strong-field interference effects in such a system are described also. The most important of these is the field-induced interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong ionizing field. The intensity range in which this effect can exist is determined. The results derived are used for a qualitative model describing supercontinuum emission in the process of multiphoton ionization.
