Photon-assisted off-resonance energy transfer between Cr3+ and Gd3+ in GdAlO3

Abstract

We report here a clear observation of photon-assisted off-resonance energy transfer. Our experiment was carried out in crystals of gadolinium aluminate (${\mathrm{GdAlO}}_{3}$) doped with chromium ions (${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$). The observed phenomenon consists of the energy transfer from a ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ ion, previously excited to the $^{2}$E state (located at about 13.770 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ above the ground state), to a neighbor ${\mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$ ion (which has the first excited state located at about 31.840 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$), with the simultaneous absorption of a photon that energy matches exactly the difference between the gadolinium excited-state energy and the energy supplied by the chromium ion.

Cooperative Absorption and Luminescence in Cr3+ -Doped EuAl O3

Jan P. van der Ziel, LeGrand G. Van Uitert

Absorption and emission involving exchange-coupled nearest-neighbor ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ and ${\mathrm{Eu}}^{3+}$ ions have been observed in ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$-doped EuAl${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ at the sum of the chromium $^{2}E_{g}$ and europium $^{7}F_{1}$ energies. Weak absorption at the difference energy has also been observed. The latter is the inverse of the previously studied europium terminated chromium emission. The intensities of the ${\mathrm{Eu}}^{3+}$ sideband transitions vary with the strength of the exchange-induced electric dipole moment.

Laser-induced grating spectroscopy of Cr3+-doρed garnets

Richard C. Powell, Faqir M. Hashmi, A. Suchocki +2 more

Laser-induced grating measurements were made as a function of laser power and write beam crossing angle for various temperatures between 10 and 300 K on Cr3+ ions in Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), Gd3Sc2Ga3O12 (GSGG), and GGG mixed with Ca, Mg, and Zr ions. Population gratings were produced in the Cr3+ ions, and the diffusion coefficient describing energy migration among the Cr3+ ions was determined from the grating decay rate. The energy migration was found to increase as the temperature was raised for GGG and to decrease with decreasing temperature for GSGG. This difference is attributed to the differences in the crystal field splittings of the excited states in the two hosts. Enhanced energy diffusion was observed in the multiply doped GGG sample. Contributions to the laser-induced gratings from absorption and dispersion changes were determined, and this was used to provide information on radiationless relaxation and excited state absorption processes. For long writing times, long-lived changes in the refractive index were observed and attributed to optically induced color centers.

Observation of Simultaneous Excitation of the Coupled Cr3+ Ions to the Eg2 States in LaAl O3 : Cr3+

Jan P. van der Ziel

Transitions to the states of ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ pairs where both ions are excited to the $^{2}E_{g}$ levels have been observed in LaAl${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$:${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$. Of the predicted eight pair levels, three of the $S=0$ and one of the $S=1$ levels have definitely been identified at approximately twice the $^{2}E_{g}$ energy absorption. The remaining transitions either are obscured by the strong vibronic spectrum or are very weak. The polarization of the lines agrees with a model based on the mechanism of exchange-induced electric dipole moment.

Mechanisms for three-centre energy pooling in lanthanide doped crystals

Robert D. Jenkins, Davıd L. Andrews

Summary form only given. The migration of excitation energy within dielectric crystals doped with lanthanide ions is a rich area for the study of mechanisms involving both conventional pairwise resonance energy transfer and more complex many-body effects. Within the framework of molecular quantum electrodynamics, we present a delineation of systems undergoing simultaneous transfer from two pre-excited donor ions to a single ground-state acceptor, termed three-centre energy pooling. Calculations lead to the identification of two competing mechanisms of transfer co-existing in each system-one cooperative pathway where the excitation is transferred directly to the acceptor from both donors, alongside an accretive mechanism where the excitation energy of one donor is accrued by a second, with net transfer to the acceptor ensuing.

Resonant enhancement of direct two-photon absorption in Tb3+ : LiYF4

Huang Jin, G. K. Liu, R. L. Cone

Resonant enhancement by a factor of over 20 of direct two-photon absorption from the ground state $^{7}\mathrm{F}_{6}$ to the excited state $^{5}\mathrm{G}_{6}$ of the 4${f}^{8}$ configuration of the ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$ ion at 40 200 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ has been observed in time-resolved experiments with two separate pulsed lasers. The results provide clear evidence for resonant enhancement of two-photon absorption in rare-earth compounds and imply a similar enhancement for Raman scattering and nonlinear-optical mixing. Two separate contributions to the direct transition moment were observed. When a single laser frequency was used, the intermediate states which made the largest contribution were from excited configurations of opposite parity; those intermediate states were far from resonance. Detailed two-frequency experiments showed, however, that near a single photon $^{7}\mathrm{F}_{6}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{5}$${\mathrm{D}}_{4}$ resonance, a much stronger contribution arose from the 4${f}^{8}$ configuration $^{5}\mathrm{D}_{4}$ intermediate state. Two-photon absorption was clearly isolated from two-step (incoherent) excitation by varying the timing of two separately triggered lasers.

TWO PHOTON SPECTROSCOPY OF ELECTRONIC TSANSITIONS IN PURE GdA10 3

Luiz A. O. Nunes, Joaquim Coutinho Neto

The Gd3+ ion has a very special level structure when compared to all others rare-earths ions. Its first excited state is 32.000 cm-1above the ground state(1) This unique property make dificult to study the level structure of this ion in solids due to its superposition with the excitonic absorption band of the crystal. Two photon absorption spectroscopy is the ideal technique to study this ion since the cross section for two photon excitonic transition is forbiden(2)
