The nonlinear optical response of interacting charge-transfer excitons with a weak probe in a strong pump field

Abstract

The nonlinear optical response of interacting charge-transfer excitons is investigated theoretically by means of pseudospin operators for the model Hamiltonian. The generalized optical Bloch equations including the static dipolar interaction of charge-transfer excitons are derived in terms of the Heisenberg equation of motion and the mean-field approximation. It is shown that the intrinsic optical bistability due to the strong interaction of charge-transfer excitons may exist in the interacting charge-transfer exciton system. The absorption spectrum of interacting charge-transfer excitons associated with a weak probe field in the presence of a strong pump field is also calculated using the linear-response theory. The results show that a gain without population inversion can be observed in the interacting charge-transfer exciton system.

Optical bistability and nonlinearity of coherently coupled exciton-plasmon systems

Jian-Bo Li, Nam-Chol Kim, Mu-Tian Cheng +3 more

We theoretically investigated optical third-order nonlinearity of a coherently coupled exciton-plasmon hybrid system under a strong control field with a weak probe field. The analytic formulas of exciton population and effective third-order optical susceptibility of the hybrid of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) were deduced. The bistable exciton population and the induced bistable nonlinear absorption and refraction response were revealed. The bistability region can be tuned by adjusting the size of metal nanoparticle, interparticle distance and intensity of control field. Our results have perspective applications in optical information processing based on resonant coupling of exciton-plasmon.

Optical nonlinearity in coupled exciton-phonon systems near metal surfaces

Xiao-Lin Li, D. L. Lin, Thomas F. George

Surface effects on optical bistability and pump-probe processes for coupled exciton-phonon systems are studied theoretically. When a laser beam is directed on an excitron-phonon coupling system inside an optical cavity, the cavity field intensity is investigated as a function of the driving field intensity for various distances between the sample and a metallic surface representing one of the mirrors of the cavity. It is found that the direction of switch of the optical bistability can be controlled by adjusting the distance from the surface. For a strong laser pump field and a weak probe field directed on this system, the pump-field-induced absorption spectrum is investigated for different distances between this sample and the metal surface. It is found that the position and line shape of the spectrum are significantly changed due to the presence of the surface.

Time-dependent Light Absorption by Impurity Centres

Boris P. Antonyuk, S.F. Musichenko, Peter Bussemer

Light absorption by impurity centres with generation of charge-transfer excitons is considered. The static electric field produced by already existing excitons shifts the excitation energy of non-excited centres and, hence, the probability of their excitation. This dependence of the absorption cross-section of a centre on the spatial distribution of excitons results in the nonlinear behaviour of the system under strong pumping. Computer simulation of exciton generation and annihilation shows that stationary powerful light transmitted through a sample has a time dependent power.

Optical bistability and switching of coherent quasiparticles in condensed media

P. I. Bardetskiı̆, V. A. Zalozh, A. Kh. Rotaru +2 more

An investigation is reported of static and dynamic optical bistability and optical switching in a system of coherent excitons and biexcitons in semiconductors subject to the exciton-photon interaction and optical conversion of excitons into biexcitons. The Heisenberg equations of motion for excitons and biexcitons and the wave equation for the field are used to derive a system of nonlinear differential equations describing the dynamic evolution of such a system. The equation of state for a theory of optical bistability is derived for the static case. A study is made of the stability of stationary optical bistability states. A computer experiment is used in an investigation of the switching times between the branches

Excitonic Molecules in Nonlinear Optical Response

Leonid V. Keldysh

Abstract A model which allows to treat self‐consistently many‐body exciton effects, including biexciton formation, is proposed for the theoretical description of an excitonic polarization induced by an intense electromagnetic field. In the presence of a pump field the normal spectrum of electromagnetic waves in the vicinity of the nonlinear biexciton resonance is shown to be composed of four polariton branches, where each is the superposition of two photons and two excitons. In the self‐consistent field approximation, the structure of the interconnected, strongly nonlinear exciton and biexciton resonances is studied, including optical Stark shift, multistable behaviour, etc. For a certain range of the exciton interaction parameters at sufficiently strong pump wave the system of excitons and excitonic molecules transforms abruptly to a dense coherent electron–hole “liquid”. Appearance and temporary evolution of an exciton–biexciton system after switching on a pump is also considered.

Intrinsic optical bistability of thin films of linear molecular aggregates: The one-exciton approximation

Joost A. Klugkist, Victor A Malyshev, Jasper Knoester

We perform a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of an ultrathin film consisting of oriented linear aggregates. A single aggregate is described by a Frenkel exciton Hamiltonian with uncorrelated on-site disorder. The exciton wave functions and energies are found exactly by numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. The principal restriction we impose is that only the optical transitions between the ground state and optically dominant states of the one-exciton manifold are considered, whereas transitions to other states, including those of higher exciton manifolds, are neglected. The optical dynamics of the system is treated within the framework of truncated optical Maxwell-Bloch equations, in which the electric polarization is calculated by using a joint distribution of the transition frequency and the transition dipole moment of the optically dominant states. This function contains all the statistical information about these two quantities that govern the optical response and is obtained numerically by sampling many disorder realizations. We derive a steady-state equation that establishes a relationship between the output and input intensities of the electric field and show that within a certain range of the parameter space this equation exhibits a three-valued solution for the output field. A time-domain analysis is employed to investigate the stability of different branches of the three-valued solutions and to get insight into switching times. We discuss the possibility to experimentally verify the bistable behavior.
