Excitonic Molecules in Nonlinear Optical Response

Abstract

Abstract A model which allows to treat self‐consistently many‐body exciton effects, including biexciton formation, is proposed for the theoretical description of an excitonic polarization induced by an intense electromagnetic field. In the presence of a pump field the normal spectrum of electromagnetic waves in the vicinity of the nonlinear biexciton resonance is shown to be composed of four polariton branches, where each is the superposition of two photons and two excitons. In the self‐consistent field approximation, the structure of the interconnected, strongly nonlinear exciton and biexciton resonances is studied, including optical Stark shift, multistable behaviour, etc. For a certain range of the exciton interaction parameters at sufficiently strong pump wave the system of excitons and excitonic molecules transforms abruptly to a dense coherent electron–hole “liquid”. Appearance and temporary evolution of an exciton–biexciton system after switching on a pump is also considered.

Optical nonlinearities due to excitonic molecules: Optical Stark effects and phase conjugation

Eiichi Hanamura

Large, nonlinear-optical phenomena are shown theoretically to be observable under nearly two-photon resonant pumping of the excitonic molecule (EM), e.g., in a CuCl crystal. When the exciton polariton (EP) is resonantly pumped into the EM, they are hybridized with each other and show optical Stark splitting. These splittings can be observed, respectively, as a sharp dip in the reflection spectrum and two-photon absorption spectrum due to the EM. We can also clarify how these splittings change into the blueshifts and redshifts of the EP and the EM as functions of the pump frequency and power. The generation of the phase-conjugated wave is shown also to be enhanced under two-photon resonant pumping of the EM. Some characteristics about pump-probe frequency and polarization dependences are also clarified. We have also derived the effective Hamiltonian of the exciton and the EM from the first-principles equation of motion for the exciton coupled with that of the EM. This Hamiltonian has made possible the theoretical analysis of these nonlinear-optical phenomena.

Exciton correlations within an electron gas

J. Berney

I report on the effect of a moderate excess electron population on nonlinearities in modulation-doped CdTe quantum wells. I show that the electron population does not qualitatively affect the nature of correlations between excitons. In this respect, I bring strong evidence of the existence of unbound and bound (stable) two-exciton states in the presence of electrons and charged excitons (trions). In time-resolved pump and probe experiment, they lead to the observation of electromagnetically induced transparency and optical Stark shift of the exciton resonance. Rabi flopping of excitons within a sea of electrons is also clearly evidenced through ac Stark splitting and gain without inversion. The quantum coherence is more robust to electron induced dephasing than what would have been expected. I demonstrate third and higher-order exciton correlations in the presence of electrons, which manifest, for increasing exciton densities, through the blue-shift of counter-polarized exciton resonance, the red-shift of the biexciton resonance and the exciton to biexciton crossover. I also evidence correlated behavior of excitons and trions under excitation which manifests itself by crossed trion-exciton effects. I observe a wealth of phenomena encompassing bleaching, crossed bleaching, induced-absorption and energy shifts of the resonances. Significant differences are found between the nonlinear optical effects induced by an exciton and a trion population. Electron scattering with electron and exciton is shown to strongly broaden the high energy tail of exciton and trion resonance lineshapes. Variations of electron density result in a clear modification of both resonance lineshapes. The dynamics of the formation of trions is also studied. I propose a two-channel mechanism for their formation; they are formed through bi- and tri-molecular processes. This implies that both negatively and positively charged excitons coexist in a quantum well, even in the absence of excess carriers. The model is applied to a time-resolved photoluminescence experiment performed on a very high quality InGaAs quantum well sample, in which the photoluminescence contributions at the energy of the trion, exciton and at the band edge can be clearly separated and traced over a broad range of times and densities. The unresolved discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental radiative decay time of the exciton in a doped semiconductor is explained.

On the theory of coherent pairing of excitons in molecular crystals

Constantine Mavroyannis

The theory of the coherent pairing of excitons in the presence of a resonant electromagnetic field is generalized to describe the biexciton spectra of molecular crystals, which contain several molecules (atoms) in the unit cell. The excitation spectrum for crystals like anthracene having two molecules per unit cell is discussed in detail. It is found that, at high exciton densities and under resonance of near-resonance conditions and at temperatures below some value T c , the formation of four biexciton states is feasible provided that the dielectric gaps induced by the electromagnetic field are less than those of the corresponding biexciton states. Expressions for the absorption coefficient describing optical transitions to the biexciton states are derived.

Optical Bistability and Multistability in a System of High Density Excitons and Biexcitons in Semiconductors

P. I. Khadzhi, G. D. Shibarshina, A. Kh. Rotaru +1 more

Abstract Results are given on the investigation of optical bistability and multistability phenomena both, in the exciton range of the spectrum due to exciton‐photon and exciton‐exciton interactions and in the range of two‐photon generation of the biexcitons (excitonic molecules). For each case the steady‐state equations are obtained.

New nonlinear optical effect: self-reflection phenomenon due to exciton-biexciton-light interaction in semiconductors

P. I. Khadzhi, K. D. Lyakhomskaya, L. Yu. Nad’kin +1 more

The characteristic peculiarities of the self-reflection of a strong electromagnetic wave in a system of coherent excitons and biexcitons due to the exciton-photon interaction and optical exciton-biexciton conversion in semiconductors were investigated as one of the manifestations of nonlinear optical Stark-effect. It was found that a monotonously decreasing standing wave with an exponential decreasing spatial tail is formed in the semiconductor. Under the action of the field of a strong pulse, an optically homogeneous medium is converted, into the medium with distributed feedback. The appearance of the spatially separated narrow pears of the reflective index, extinction and reflection coefficients is predicted.

Nonlinear Propagation of Laser Pulses in GaAs‐GaAlAs MQWS

Günter Manzke, K. Henneberger

Abstract A theoretical approach is presented for the description of nonlinear optical properties of GaAs‐GaAlAs MQWS connected with the blue‐shift of the 1s‐exciton resonance at high excitation. An experimental situation is considered where the MQWS is resonantly excited by a pump pulse of narrow spectral width creating a high density of excitons, and where the optical spectra are recorded by an ultrafast broad‐band probe pulse at different time delays. The densities of excitons in the single GaAs wells are determined by the simultaneous solution of the exciton diffusion and the optical problem of wave propagation. With increasing pump intensity jumps of the exciton densities in certain layers appear when the maximum of absorption crosses the pump frequency due to the blue‐shift of the resonance. The mechanism of the corresponding bistabilities in the reflection and transmission spectra is similar to that observed in connection with the quantum‐confined Stark effect.
