Abstract

We investigate the backscattering for converging beams in iron-doped lithium niobate crystals. Due to the nonlinear properties of the crystal, backscattering exhibits temporally fluctuating speckles that make a transition to the phase conjugate of the incident beam under certain circumstances. Our observation seems to point to a new kind of self-pumped phase conjugation in photorefractive media.

Stationary Photorefractive Self-Pump Phase-Conjugation with Stimulated Backward Scattering in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystals

Jingjun Xu, Xin-zheng Zhang, Qian Sun +4 more

Stationary photorefractive self-pumped phase-conjugation with one four-wave-mixing interaction region, stimulated by the photorefractive amplified backward scattering, is obtained in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, in which the strong backward scattered light is gotten by putting a scattering particle on the backface of the sample. Even though its reflectivities are not high (its temporal and stationary reflectivities are 10% and 3%, respectively), due to the low electrooptic coefficients of LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, our experimental results prove that this mechanism is effective and simple comparing with the "cat" self-pumped phase-conjugator.

Self-conjugation of pump waves with "boiling" speckle structure via backward stimulated diffusive scattering in an Fe:KNbO3crystal

We have investigated backward stimulated diffusive scattering of light with a time-varying speckle structure by photorefractive crystals in which the nonlinearity mechanism is diffusion-driven. We show that the efficiency and conjugated fraction for this process depend on the ratio of the coherence time to the dielectric relaxation time of the medium.

Photorefractive phase conjugators

M. D. Ewbank

The demonstration of optical phase conjugation in photorefractive materials has been accomplished by numerous methods, including i) externally-pumped four-wave mixing,1ii) self-pumped (passive) phase conjugation,24iii) stimulated backscattering,5,6and iv) mutually-pumped phase conjugation.7-10Stimulated backscattering and self-pumped phase conjugators have only a single incident beam. On the other hand, externally-pumped four-wave mixing has two auxiliary pumping beams in addition to the incident probe beam. Different still is the cross-conjugation of the two incident beams in mutually pumped phase conjugators. To use these conjugators in a given application, the compatibility between the processes generating the phase-conjugate wave(s) and the application must be considered. The distinguishing features of the different conjugators translate to advantages or disadvantages for certain applications.

Theoretical study on effects of stimulated photorefractive backscattering in self-pumped phase conjugators

Shuo‐Xing Dou, Jiasen Zhang, Muyang Wang +2 more

Effects of stimulated photorefractive backscattering (SPB) interactions in both stimulated photorefractive backscattering and four-wave mixing (SPB-FWM) and total internal reflection (TIR) self-pumped phase conjugators have been analyzed theoretically. SPB interactions in the four-wave mixing regions are neglected. Calculations show that the operational threshold and the phase conjugation reflectivity of both phase conjugators are very sensitive to the backscattering two-wave mixing gain coefficient of the crystals. From these results the mechanism transition phenomenon of a self-pumped phase conjugator between SPB-FWM and TIR can be explained if the backscattering gain coefficient of the crystal varies with doping concentration or with wavelength.

Incoherent phase-conjugate backscattering in photorefractive media

Mordechai Segev, Amnon Yariv

Phase-conjugate backscattering in photorefractive (PR) materials, which can be considered a special case of two-beam coupling, involves interaction between two counterpropagating beams via light-induced reflection gratings. Since this backscattering results from interference between the beams, it requires mutual temporal coherence. Moreover, when one beam is self-generated, the input beam is required to have a long coherence length.
