Transition from Backscattering Speckles to Phase Conjugation in LiNbO 3 :Fe

Qiang Wu, Jingjun Xu, R. A. Rupp +3 more

We investigate the backscattering for converging beams in iron-doped lithium niobate crystals. Due to the nonlinear properties of the crystal, backscattering exhibits temporally fluctuating speckles that make a transition to the phase conjugate of the incident beam under certain circumstances. Our observation seems to point to a new kind of self-pumped phase conjugation in photorefractive media.

Photorefractive Spatial Dark-Soliton Stripes in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystal and Their Application

Guoquan Zhang, Si-min Liu, Jingjun Xu +2 more

We observed the photorefractive spatial dark-soliton stripes in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystal, and demonstrate the planar waveguide property of refractive index profile induced by these spatial dark-soliton stripes. We suggest a new mothed to form the planar waveguide utilizing the grating fixing technique.

Pump Intensity Dependence of Two-Beam Coupling in Doped Lithium Niobate Crystals

Nouel Y. Kamber, Jingjun Xu, Sonia M. Mikha +5 more

We demonstrated experimentally the dependence of two-beam coupling on the incident pump intensity in our samples of doped LiNbO 3 crystals. Our results show that there is an optimum pump intensity for the signal beam amplification, which can be easily controlled by doping the LiNbO 3 crystal with suitable concentrations of Fe and damage-resistant dopants such as Mg, In, and Zn.

Phase conjugation and stimulated effects in photorefractive materials

Jack Feinberg

Photorefractive materials exhibit a large optical nonlinearity which can efficiently couple even weak optical beams. If the nonlinear coupling strength exceeds a certain threshold (whose value depends on geometry), stimulated beams appear. We will review recent experiments demonstrating the mischievous and often useful properties of these stimulated beams. For example, a single-beam incident on a crystal of photorefractive barium titanate can stimulate the generation of a phase-conjugate beam.

Critical Enhancement of Photorefractive Beam Coupling

Evgeniy V. Podivilov, Boris I. Sturman, H. C. Pedersen +1 more

We show that a hybridization of the optical and material nonlinearities takes place near the threshold of the subharmonic generation in photorefractive crystals. It results in a critical (with a singularity) enhancement of the rate of spatial amplification of light waves and leads to a variety of new optical critical phenomena.

Parametric coherent oscillation with feedback via an orthogonally polarized wave

Coherent light amplification with photorefractive crystals may be a consequence of several frequency degenerate (or nearly degenerate) processes of nonlinear wave mixing : It appears for two- beam coupling in the crystals with diffusion-driven charge transport [1] or transport via circular photovoltaic currents [2].
