Abstract

A phosphate neodymium glass laser emitting picosecond pulses tunable in the 1.05–1.07 μ range was developed to study nonlinear optical processes in atomic barium vapor. Its temporal characteristics were investigated using a modified second harmonic beam method. Electron stimulated Raman scattering and four-photon parametric conversion in atomic barium vapor were used to obtain efficient conversion of the third harmonic of the picosecond phosphate laser (350–356 nm) to the Stokes (580–600 nm) and anti-Stokes (250–253 nm) waves. The highest conversion quantum efficiency for the Stokes wave was 15%. Electron stimulated Raman scattering in an (6 s 2 ) 1 S –(6 s 7 s ) 1 S –(6 s 6 p ) 1 P 0 system, having a strongly forbidden first transition, was recorded for the first time. In the same system, two-photon pumping generated four-photon parametric superradiance and it was found that the signal and idler waves had anomalously broad spectra (wider than 100 cm −1 ).

Efficient generation of tunable infrared ultrashort light pulses by nonlinear frequency conversion in atomic cesium vapor

David G. Sarkisyan, A. A. Badalian, S O Sapondzhyan +1 more

Electron stimulated Raman scattering in atomic cesium vapor was used in efficient conversion of the freqeuncy of the second harmonic to the infrared range in the case of picosecond YAG and neodymium phosphate glass lasers. The tuning range of ultrashort pulses was 2.21-2.55μ, the spectral width of the output pulses did not exceed 2 cm−1, and the quantum efficiency of the conversion process was 10%. In addition to tunable ultrashort pulses, picosecond pulses at fixed wavelengths of 3.1 and 0.88μ were generated.

Effective noncollinear four-wave parametric interaction in atomic barium vapor subjected to picosecond pump pulses

R. R. Badalian, Б. В. Крыжановский, David G. Sarkisyan

An investigation was made of a noncollinear transient four-wave parametric interaction in an atomic barium vapor subjected to the first and second harmonics of tunable neodymium-activated phosphate glass and YAG:Nd3+ lasers emitting picosecond pulses. Variation of the angle between the pump beams was used to control the characteristics of the signal and idler pulses. When the pump radiation was supplied only by a master oscillator, it was possible to generate relatively simply ultrashort pulses tunable near 0.98 μm. A comparison was made with a theory of transient four-wave parametric interaction, which was valid also in saturating pump fields.

Generation of picosecond YAG laser radiation and its efficient conversion to the visible and ultraviolet range in atomic barium vapor

David G. Sarkisyan, S O Sapondzhyan

Emission at wavelengths of 1.0615 and 1.074 μ from a self-mode-locked YAG:Nd3+ laser was observed at thresholds which were only 1.5 and 3.5 times higher than the threshold for the emission of radiation with λ = 1.064 μ. Efficient conversion (characterized by a quantum efficiency of ~ 15%) of the third harmonics of the radiations with λ = 1.064 and 1.0615 μ to the visible (590 nm) and ultraviolet (250 nm) ranges was achieved in atomic barium vapor. Electron stimulated Raman scattering due to a strongly forbidden transition in a system of Ba atoms was observed for the first time.

Investigation of electronic stimulated Raman scattering of excimer laser radiation by metal atoms

V S Verkhovskiĭ, Vladimir M. Klimkin, В. Е. Прокопьев +3 more

An experimental investigation was made of stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) of excimer laser radiation in barium, thulium, and europium vapors. The energy of XeF* laser radiation ( λ = 351 nm) converted to the yellow range (585 nm) in barium vapor was 6 mJ and the conversion efficiency was ∼39%. The spectral composition of the converted radiation is governed by the STRS, by four-wave parametric processes, and also by lasing due to the natural barium transition. Selection of the pump frequencies is required to concentrate the converted radiation at a single frequency and to reduce its divergence. Stimulated Raman scattering of XeCl* laser radiation ( λ = 308 nm) was achieved in thulium vapor at λ = 422 nm. In europium vapor in quasiresonance with the 6 s 2 8 S 0 1/2 –5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 forbidden transition, stimulated emission was obtained due to the natural 5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 –6 s 6 p 10 P 11/2 and 5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 –6 s 6 p 10 P 3/2 transitions.

Two-photon resonant processes in atomic barium vapour

R. Stringat, G. Fabre, M Taleb

Two-photon resonant or nearly resonant optical processes have been investigated in atomic barium vapour ( approximately 10 17 cm -3 ) with a pulse dye laser (frequency omega L ) covering the range 735-415 nm. These interactions result in strong coherent emissions emitted either forward and backward, or forward only. The optical processes responsible for these coherent emissions have been identified. Seventy five lines (frequency omega ES ) emitted from 1000 to 360 nm are due to optically pumped stimulated emissions or stimulated electronic hyper-Raman scattering. Twenty eight lines (frequency omega sigma ) observed from 795 to 250 nm are generated through four-wave-mixing parametric processes with omega sigma =2 omega L +or- omega ES , and nine- (795-260 nm) through six-wave-mixing parametric processes with omega sigma =2 omega L - omega ES1 - omega ES2 +or- omega ES3 .
