Abstract

We propose a new variant of the photon echo technique in solids, which can be used for realizing optical quantum memory in the submillimetre wavelength on the level of single-photon fields. The physical model of the proposed quantum memory technique is theoretically analysed and the possibilities of its experimental realization are discussed.

Photon-echo quantum memories in inhomogeneously broadened two-level atoms

D. L. McAuslan, Patrick M. Ledingham, William R. Naylor +4 more

Here, we propose a solid-state quantum memory that does not require spectral holeburning, instead using strong rephasing pulses like traditional photon-echo techniques. The memory uses external broadening fields to reduce the optical depth and so switch off the collective atom-light interaction when desired. The proposed memory should allow operation with reasonable efficiency in a much broader range of material systems, for instance Er${}^{3+}$ doped crystals which have a transition at 1.5 $\ensuremath{\mu}\text{m}$. We present analytic theory supported by numerical calculations and initial experiments.

Technique of quantum memory on the basis of a photon echo in gases

Sergey A. Moiseev, M. I. Noskov

The technique of quantum memory based on the use of a photon echo in gases is studied theoretically taking into account three-dimensional specific features in the propagation of light fields and the motion of atoms in a gas. Analytical solutions describing the effects of atomic motion and diffraction of light fields on the properties of the quantum state of light being reconstructed are obtained. Estimates of the parameters of light fields that are optimum for realizing the quantum memory based on a photon echo in gaseous media are presented.

Telecommunication-Wavelength Solid-State Memory at the Single Photon Level

Björn Lauritzen, Jiří Minář, Hugues de Riedmatten +4 more

We demonstrate experimentally the storage and retrieval of weak coherent light fields at telecommunication wavelengths in a solid. Light pulses at the single photon level are stored for a time up to 600 ns in an erbium-doped Y2SiO5 crystal at 2.6 K and retrieved on demand. The memory is based on photon echoes with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening, which is realized here for the first time at the single photon level. This is implemented with an external field gradient using the linear Stark effect. This experiment demonstrates the feasibility of a solid-state quantum memory for single photons at telecommunication wavelengths, which would represent an important resource in quantum information science.

Complete reconstruction of one and two photon fields using the novel photon echo techniques

S. A. Moiseev, M. I. Noskov

The novel variants of the photon echo technique for the storage and complete reconstruction of the quantum states of one and two photon fields are theoretically investigated. Such new possible schemes are proposed for two types of three-level macroscopic coherent media, where the specific spectral and temporal properties of the quantum dynamics are analyzed. Special physical analysis is devoted to the complete reconstruction of the mapped quantum states at the multipulse restoring, its spatial, temporal and spectral properties. The specific possibilities of the proposed schemes for the quantum computations are also discussed. (Summary only available)
