Theoretical study of nonlinear electromagnetically induced absorption in four-level atomic system

Abstract

In the n-type four-level atomic system, we have studied the nonlinear theory of electromagnetically induced absorption. The results show that the probe light Rabi frequency and the attenuation distribution coefficient A affect the nonlinear absorption and then the absorption of a medium. When the probe light intensity is weak, the absorption of the medium and the linear absorption are the same, showing the characteristics of electromagnetic induction absorption. When the probe light intensity is increased, the absorption of the medium and the linear absorption are no longer the same, and now the medium absorption curve will show hole burning phenomenon, and then it will show the gain phenomenon. At the same time, the nonlinear absorption is affected by the value of A. Even if the probe light is weak, the medium absorption will change the electromagnetic induction absorption into the gain phenomenon with the A value decreasing.

The Research of Electromagnetically induced transparency and giant Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Yanpeng Zhang

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of applied coherent fields on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) and Kerr nonlinearity in the four-level Y-type energy atom system. It is found that the Absorption curve of the atom system changes from one EIT window to a gain interval which has two transparency points when the intensity of coupling field and pumping field changes from equality to inequality. The position of transparency points, the magnitude of gain value together with the width of gain interval are all closely connected with the changed Rabi frequency of applied fields. It is also found that Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced but accompanied by linear Absorption when applied fields are all weak and their relative intensity reduces. When the intensity of applied fields is enlarged,Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced significantly and its peak moves to the position of transparency point with the enlargement of their relative intensity. That is to say, giant Kerr nonlinearity accompanied by vanishing linear Absorption is obtained. Finally,we find that the effect of the intensity variation of the pumping field on the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity is more remarkable than that of the coupling field.

Electromagnetically Induced Left Handedness in Y-type Four Level Atomic System

Zhang Zhen-qinga, Zhao Shun-caia

The quantum system with an interaction between a closed Y-type four-level atom and multi-mode light fields is adopted to possess left handedness by means of the technique of quantum coherence. In the representation of interaction, the density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the di-pole approximation. The conclusion of the numerical simulation shows that under the appropriate parameter conditions, the medium can achieve negative permittivity and negative permeability simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness effect happens and the left-handed material is realized.) In the condition of the weak probe field, when the Rabi frequency of probe light increases, the frequency range of the medium to achieve its left-handed effect decreases and the refractive index and absorption coefficient will also changed correspondingly. The medium to affect light absorption and gain in the conditions of the establishment of left -handed effect are also discussed. The paper can be concluded that, in the conditions of weak probe field, the electro-magnetic induction can be used to achieve the left-handed effect of the medium, which extends the implementation of left-handed materials in the experiment, and extends the application field of electro-magnetic induction.

The Absorption and Dispersion Properties in a Four-level Inverted-Y Atomic System

Jun Zeng

A four-level atomic system in an inverted-Y configuration interacted with three optical fields has been investigated and the properties of absorption and dispersion in different control optical fields have been discussed. The electromagnetic induced transparency would be obtained by choosing proper parameters while the optical nonlinearity of the system would be changed with external fields. The numerical results also show the probe gain via changing phases of Rabi frequency.

Investigation of Electromagnetically Induced Absorption

Fangyi Liu

Electromagnetically induced absorption(EIA) is an intriguing phenomenon of light-atom interaction. The study of its nonlinear behaviors has theoretical significance and potential applications. On the basis of the researches of degenerate two-level system,N-type four-level system and quasi degenerate N-type level system, the forming mechanism and creating conditions of EIA are given. The result that destructive interference of atomic coherence leads to electromagnetically induced absorption is shown.Furthermore, the dramatic change of dispersion line in the corresponding frequency occurs in the anomalous dispersion, which can be used to realize speeding up of the light group velocity or negative group velocity. The applications of EIA are being further studied.

Xiangyang Zhang

Using numerical simulation methods, the properties of the absorption and dispersion of probe field in a four-level atomic system with two driving fields are analyzed.Under the condition of resonance, electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) can appear in this system by adjusting the Rabi frequency of the coherent fields.Furthermore, the phenomenon of performance gain can be obtained by choosing appropriate parameters.Meanwhile, lasing without inversion(LWI) can be explicitly realized in this closed system.

Electromagnetically Induced Left Handedness in Ladder-Type Four Level Atomic System

Qiang Chen

The system of a ladder-type four-level atoms interacting with multi-mode light fields is discussed to possess left handedness through the mechanism of quantum interference. In the representation of interaction, the density matrix method is utilized. The conclusion of the numerical simulation shows that to use appropriately chosen parameters, the real parts of both the relative dielectric permittivity and the relative magnetic permeability will be negative, and then the left handedness effect happens and the left-handed material is realized. The medium to affect light absorption and gain in the conclusion of the establishment of left-handed effect are also discussed. The results show that in the condition of weak probe field, the electro-magnetic induction can be used to achieve the left-handed effect of the medium.
