Abstract

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of applied coherent fields on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) and Kerr nonlinearity in the four-level Y-type energy atom system. It is found that the Absorption curve of the atom system changes from one EIT window to a gain interval which has two transparency points when the intensity of coupling field and pumping field changes from equality to inequality. The position of transparency points, the magnitude of gain value together with the width of gain interval are all closely connected with the changed Rabi frequency of applied fields. It is also found that Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced but accompanied by linear Absorption when applied fields are all weak and their relative intensity reduces. When the intensity of applied fields is enlarged,Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced significantly and its peak moves to the position of transparency point with the enlargement of their relative intensity. That is to say, giant Kerr nonlinearity accompanied by vanishing linear Absorption is obtained. Finally,we find that the effect of the intensity variation of the pumping field on the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity is more remarkable than that of the coupling field.

Enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic sysem based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Le Thuy An, Vu Ngọc Sau, Doan Hoai Son

We study enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic system by the analytical method. The results apply to the 87Rb atoms and show that in the presence of the EIT effect (i.e., the presence of coupling laser field), the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced several order of magnitudes (about 10-6 cm2/W) around the EIT window. That is, on the Kerr nonlinear graph the two positive and negative values are found on both sides of the resonant frequency. The amplitude and sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient can be controlled versus the intensity or frequency of the coupling laser field. Analytical results are useful for experimental observation and related applications.

Kerr nonlinearity and EIT in a double Lambda type atomic system

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Ali Khaledi‐Nasab, Ali Raheli

The giant Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level double Lambda type atomic system is theoretically predicted. We find that an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved just by the intensity of coupling filed that lies within the transparency window. It is also shown that the giant Kerr nonlinearity with reduced absorption can be achieved by the quantum interference mechanisms.

Giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Nguyen Tuan Anh, Nguyen Huy Bang, Doai Van Le

We found the analytical expression for cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient in a four-level Y-type atomic system. The analytical model is applied to 85Rb atoms and shown that under electromagnetically induced transparency, cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced by several orders of magnitude. At the same time, the amplitude and the sign of cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient are controlled with respect to the intensity and the frequency of the coupling laser field. The analytical model can be useful to explain the experimental results and to study related effects in nonlinear optics. Full Text: PDF ReferencesC. Ottaviani, D. Vitali, M. Artoni, F. Cataliotti, P. The electromagnetically induced transparency and enhanced Kerr nonlinearity effect

Liqiang Wang

A theoretical investigation of the effect of spontaneously generated coherence and the applied laser field intensity on the electromagnetically induced transparency and Kerr nonlinearity is carried out.It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced is carried out,and the maximal Kerr nonlinearity does not only enter the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensitifies, but also gets enhanced about 10 times with large SGC coefficients than that with no SGC effect. In addition, the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can also be obtained by decreasing the ratio of the coupling field intensity to the control field intensity.

Study of coherence effects in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Yafang Shi, Lin Liu +6 more

Atomic coherence and interference play an important role in the study of the atom-photon interactions. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is an extensively studied two-photon coherence phenomenon theoretically as well as experimentally. EIT is mainly observed in three-level atomic systems which causes transparency by quenching absorption of the medium. In this paper, based on the lambda type three-level system including energy level |1>, |2> and |3>, a microwave driving field is introduced between the excited-state energy level |3> and another excited-state energy level |4> to form an inverted Y-type four-level system. We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in this system. The results show that the coupling field makes the probing absorption intensity at the resonant frequency have a very narrow line-width depression, i.e., EIT. The microwave field causes a dynamic Stark splitting of the energy level |3> and induces the Aulter-Townes double peaks. Their frequency interval is exactly equal to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field. The presence of all three fields induces wide window of EIT at the line center owing to the enhanced depression results. The transient evolution is also discussed to understand the optical switching process in the system. Our theoretical study will be helpful to get a deeper insight into the three-photon effects in multilevel systems.

Colossal Kerr nonlinearity without absorption in a five-level atomic medium

Nguyen Huy Bang, Le Van Doai

In this work, we present an analytical method to achieve giant Kerr nonlinearity without absorption in a five-level atomic medium. By using iterative perturbation technique on density matrix equations, we have derived the analytical expressions of nonlinear susceptibility and Kerr nonlinear coefficient in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) and relative phase between applied laser fields. It shows that, this five-level atomic medium exhibits multiple electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at three different frequencies, at the same time, the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced around three transparent spectral regions; in each such EIT region appears a pair of positive-negative peaks of Kerr nonlinear coefficient. In particular, these nonlinear peaks are moved to the center of the EIT windows via SGC. This means that the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced with completely suppressed absorption at different transparency frequencies. Furthermore, the magnitude and the sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient are easily controlled according to the SGC strength, the coupling laser intensity, and the relative phase between applied laser fields. Such a giant nonlinear medium can be useful for photonic devices working in the resonant frequency region without absorption. As a typical application, this giant Kerr nonlinear material has been applied to an interferometer for the formation of optical bistability, and showed the appearance of OB at the resonant frequency with significantly reduced threshold intensity and OB width.
