Abstract

Summary form only given. Single trapped ions have applications not only in frequency standards and metrology but also in studying fundamental physics and implementing quantum computation. In this proceeding, we report our initial experimental results with single trapped Yb/sup +/ ions. We have observed resolved micromotion-sideband spectra in an allowed transition and demonstrated that it can be conveniently used in micromotion reduction. In addition, we have made lifetime measurements in the two metastable D states.

A pre-stabilised 674 nm diode laser has been narrowed by locking it to a high-finesse ULE cavity and kHz error signals have been observed. Confinement of single laser cooled Sr/sup +/ ions in a miniature RF trap has been demonstrated and micromotion reduction achieved. The implication of these results, and similar results in other trapped ion systems will be discussed.

Lifetime measurements of the 4f145d metastable states in single ytterbium ions

Nan Yu, Lute Maleki

The ytterbium ion has a rich level structure of low-lying states, and is one of the most widely used in experiments with trapped ions. We have measured the radiative lifetimes for the two ${4f}^{14}5d$ metastable states using single ytterbium ions confined in a rf trap. The obtained lifetimes for ${D}_{3/2}$ and ${D}_{5/2}$ states are 52.7(2.4) and 7.0(0.4) ms, respectively. The results are in good agreement with previously measured values, but differ significantly from theoretical estimates. The ${P}_{1/2}$ branching ratio into ${D}_{3/2}$ has also been obtained from the experiment to be 0.0483 with a 9% uncertainty.

Resolved-sideband micromotion sensing in Yb+ on the 935 nm repump transition

Connor Goham, J. Britton

Ions displaced from the potential minimum in an RF Paul trap exhibit excess micromotion. A host of well-established techniques are routinely used to sense (and null) this excessive motion in applications ranging from quantum computing to atomic clocks. The rich atomic structure of Yb+, a heavy ion, includes low-lying 2D3/2 states that must be repumped to permit Doppler cooling, typically using a 935 nm laser coupled to the 3D[3/2]1/2 states. In this article, we demonstrate the use of this transition to make resolved-sideband measurements of 3D micromotion in 172Yb+ and 171Yb+ ions. Relative to other sensing techniques, our approach has very low technical overhead and is distinctively compatible with surface-electrode ion traps.

Studies of laser-cooled trapped Yb/sup +/ (frequency standard)

/sup 172/Yb/sup +/ ions in an RF trap have been laser-cooled to 2 K by driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ transition at 369.5 nm. Observations of metastable F-state populations at low pressure are reported for large numbers of Yb/sup +/ ions in the trap. A narrow-linewidth ring dye laser for probing an S-D or S-F transition in trapped Yb/sup +/ is considered.>

Progress towards a single ytterbium ion optical clock

Philip H. Taylor, Stephen A. Webster, M. W. Roberts +1 more

Summary form only given. A single laser-cooled ion held in an electrodynamic trap is a near ideal atomic sample for a frequency standard. The quantum jump technique is used to observe a high-Q forbidden transition in the ion. It has been suggested that the ultimate limit to the reproducibility of a standard of this type will lie in the region of one part in 10/sup 18/.
