Abstract

We study the features of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a single Λ-type three-level atom placed in a high-finesse cavity under the action of a coupling laser and a probe laser. Our calculations show that three transparency windows appear when the pump strength is large enough. This can be explained by the residual pump in the cavity mostly resulting in energy splitting. The level |3 is split into four slightly different energy levels, and interference takes place between the excitation pathways.Furthermore,it is also shown that the frequencies of the EIT windows can be tuned by changing the coupling field detuning 2,and that the reflection profile is very sensitive to the cavity field detuning △c.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Ladder-Type Three-Level Atom-Cavity System

YF Sun, Lei Tan, Yiping Xu

We discuss the features of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a ladder-type three-level atom-cavity system. It is shown that the presence of the strong pump field leads to the appearance of two additional windows. Meanwhile, the dispersion profiles are also modified. A steep dispersion appears in each reflection peak. The position of these windows depends on the values of the detuning Delta(2) of the control field. Moreover, it is viable to create the gain profiles when the cavity detuning Delta(c) not equal 0.

Multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in a quasi-Λ type four-level atomic system

Xiangwei Wang, Xiangyang Zhang

Using density matrix eqution, the absorption and dispersion properties of a A-type four-level system driven by coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, three, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the three EIT, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field. What's more, it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.

Cavity electromagnetically induced transparency of driven-three-level atoms: A transparent window narrowing below a natural width

Cleo L. Bentley, Jiaren Liu, Yan Biao Liao

Steady-state dynamics of a \ensuremath{\Lambda} atom in a ring cavity driven by two coherent fields are studied for arbitrary detunings, arbitrary incoherent pumping, and coherent driving intensities. Effects of both cavity and effective atom number on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are pointed out. New physical pictures for cavity EIT are given in terms of collective cooperative coefficients and dispersion experienced by the probe. In the regime of smaller collective cooperative coefficients, an absorption-gain profile is reduced to that of a general EIT estimated by the imaginary part of a corresponding dipole moment, and its transparency window is directly proportional to power broadening, if the total Rabi frequency is large enough. But in the region of larger collective cooperative coefficients which means a dense atomic medium, longer optical path, or high-Q cavity, EIT is determined not only by the imaginary part but also by the real part of the corresponding dipole moment, which results in the possibility of observing an EIT central peak with a subnatural width, while there may be nearly no power broadening.

Electromagnetically induced focusing in a Λ-type medium

Gong Shang-Qing, Zhizhan Xu, Pan Shao-hua

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogenously broadened medium consisting of Λ-type three-level atoms has been analyzed. It is shown that the Λ system can induce a transparency of the medium when the probe laser and the coupling laser have the same frequency detunings (including zero). Across the EIT window, the radial variation of the strong coupling laser radiation may lead to electromagnetically induced focusing or defocusing of the weak probe laser at separate probe frequency detuning points.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in five-level configurations under Doppler broadening

Ai Nguyen Van, Quynh Anh Thi Nguyen, Quang Hai Ho +9 more

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in five-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated for three representative configurations: M-, inverted-Y, and K-type systems driven by a weak probe field and three control laser fields. The different coupling schemes produce different quantum interference pathways and two-photon resonance conditions, leading to markedly different EIT spectra. The M-type configuration exhibits one, two, and three well-resolved transparency windows as successive control fields are introduced. In contrast, the inverted-Y configuration produces broader transparency windows because of the overlap of multiple interference channels, whereas the K-type configuration exhibits only a single EIT window when all control fields are resonant. Multiple transparency windows in the K-type system appear after introducing appropriate coupling-field detunings. Doppler broadening at room temperature significantly broadens the absorption spectrum and reduces the transparency depth, while preserving the number and positions of the EIT windows. These results demonstrate that the coupling scheme plays an important role in determining the formation and evolution of multi-window EIT spectra and identify the characteristics of the three five-level configurations for multi-channel quantum-optical applications, as well as for the experimental observation of EIT spectra in five-level configurations.
