Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler–Townes splitting in a weak radio-frequency electric field*

Liping Hao, Yongmei Xue, Jiabei Fan +3 more

Abstract We utilize an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a three-level cascade system involving Rydberg state in a room-temperature cell, formed with a cesium 6S1/2–6P3/2–66S1/2 scheme, to investigate the Autler–Townes (AT) splitting resulting from a 15.21-GHz radio-frequency (RF) field that couples the | 66 S 1 / 2 〉 → | 65 P 1 / 2 〉 Rydberg transition. The radio-frequency electric field induced AT splitting, γ AT, is defined as the peak-to-peak distance of an EIT-AT spectrum. The dependence of AT splitting γ AT on the probe and coupling Rabi frequency, Ωp and Ωc, is investigated. It is found that the EIT-AT splitting strongly depends on the EIT linewidth that is related to the probe and coupling Rabi frequency in a weak RF-field regime. Using a narrow linewidth EIT spectrum would decrease the uncertainty of the RF field measurements. This work provides new experimental evidence for the theoretical framework in [J. Appl. Phys. 121, 233106 (2017)].

The effect of the Doppler mismatch in microwave electrometry using Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler–Townes splitting

Fei Zhou, Feng-Dong Jia, Jiong Mei +8 more

Abstract We have systematically investigated the influence of the gas temperature (T), the Rabi frequencies of the probe laser (Ωp), the coupling laser (Ωc) and the radio-frequency (RF) (ΩRF) on the Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler–Townes (AT) splitting (Δf) by defining a general Doppler mismatch factor D g = ΩRF/Δf in the Rydberg atom-based microwave electrometry. The effect of T on D g is studied in detail from 0 to 1000 K, the results show that D g is insensitive to T when T < 10 μK or T > 10 K, while D g changes significantly with 10 K > T > 10 μ K . Then the effects of Ωp, Ωc and ΩRF on factor D g at T = 300 K (typical room temperature) and T = 10 μK (typical temperature of cold atom by laser cooling) are studied in detail, respectively. The results show that the linewidth of Rydberg EIT (ΓEIT) can be used as a key parameter to characterize the dependence of D g on Ωp and Ωc in both cases. D g is insensitive to T, Ωp and Ωc when ΩRF > 3ΓEIT which means that ΓEIT determines the lower limit of the linear region of the RF electric field strength measured by EIT–AT splitting. More interesting, the range where D g is insensitive to Ωp and Ωc can be greatly expanded by lowering the gas temperature to 10 μK. The ranges of parameters where D g is insensitive to T, Ωp, Ωc and ΩRF are given, and such relationship can be easily scaled to other atomic systems. The results can help the selection of various parameters in the experiments and specific applications to ensure the accuracy of measuring the RF electric field.

Quantum interference effects of γ radiation under crossing-anticrossing of nuclear levels in an RF field

Sh. Sh. Bashkirov, V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov +2 more

The quantum interference effects occurring in resonant scattering of a γ photon in the multilevel γ-optical medium 57 Fe, affected by an external RF field, have been theoretically investigated. It is shown that a significant reconstruction of the hyperfine structure of nuclear states leads to the interference of partial forwardscattering amplitudes of a γ photon and, therefore, to a significant change in the nuclear refractive index of the γ-optical medium, depending on the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the external RF field. The conditions are found under which the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency can be observed in the technique of in-phase detection of γ photons.
