Abstract

Induced absorption resonance on the open F g = 1 → F e = 2 transition of the D 1 line of the 87Rb atom has been observed. The effect of atomic motion on the formation of the resonance has been revealed. The numerical calculations are in good agreement with experiment.

Dual structure of saturated absorption resonance at an open atomic transition

В. В. Васильев, Vladimir L Velichansky, Sergei A. Zibrov +4 more

Experiments on open transitions of the D 1 line of alkali metals (Cs and Rb isotopes) reveal the dual structure of saturated absorption resonance in the signal of a high-intensity optical wave in the presence of a low-intensity counterpropagating wave. Theoretical analysis shows that the observed shape of the resonance is associated with the openness of the atomic transition as well as with the Doppler effect for atoms in a gas. The results are of general physical significance for nonlinear spectroscopy and can also find application in metrology (frequency and time standards on open transitions).

Inhibition of electromagnetically induced absorption due to excited-state decoherence in Rb vapor

H. Failache, Paulo Valente, G. Ban +2 more

The explanation presented by Taichenachev et al. [Phys. Rev. A $61,$ 011802 (2000)] according to which the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances observed in degenerate two-level systems are due to coherence transfer from the excited to the ground state is experimentally tested in a Hanle-type experiment observing the parametric resonance on the $D1$ line of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}.$ While EIA occurs in the $F=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=2$ transition in a cell containing only Rb vapor, collisions with a buffer gas (30 torr of Ne) cause the sign reversal of this resonance as a consequence of collisional decoherence of the excited state. A theoretical model in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results is presented.

Magneto-optical resonances in the field of counterpropagating waves

Sergei A. Zibrov, Yaroslav O. Dudin, A. G. Radnaev +5 more

The resonance of the intersection of sublevels in a probe laser field resonant to the cyclic transition corresponding to the D 2 87Rb line has been investigated in a zero magnetic field. The strong effect of an additional laser field acting on the adjacent transition has been revealed. In a cell without the buffer gas and antirelaxation coating, the amplitude of the probe-field absorption resonance can increase by more than an order of magnitude in the presence of a counterpropagating wave. The effect is observed at the laser frequency tuned to the cross resonance, when the counterpropagating waves simultaneously act on moving atoms at the cyclic and open transitions with the common lower level. The theoretical analysis of the effect of the additional field on the electromagnetically induced absorption resonance is in agreement with the experimental data.

Experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level N-type scheme in /sup 87/Rb

Vasily M. Entin, I. I. Ryabtsev

Summary form only given. The results on experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level N-type scheme are presented. The experiments were performed on the D/sub 2/ absorption line of /sup 87/Rb. An experimental setup was based on two independent external cavity diode lasers (ECDL). The copropagating orthogonally polarized laser beams were passed through a rubidium cell. The frequency of one of the lasers (laser 1) was fixed and tuned to the center of the Doppler broadened group of transitions 5S/sub 1/2/(F=2)/spl rarr/5P/sub 3/2/(F=1,2,3).

Inverse crossover resonance in the Doppler-free 87 Rb spectrum

Igor M. Beterov, I. I. Ryabtsev, Vasily M. Entin +1 more

We report about an experimental observation of alignment induced resonance in Doppler free spectrum of D2 absorption line of 87Rb ((lambda) equals 780 nm). The resonance appeared as a peak of absorption instead of transmission at the position of crossover resonance between the 5S1/2(F equals 1) yields 5P3/2(F' equals 0) and the 5S1/2(F equals 1) yields 5P3/2(F' equals 1) transitions.

Observation of electromagnetically induced absorption in open systems regardless of angular momentum

Soo-Kyoung Kim, Han Seb Moon, Kyoung-Dae Kim +1 more

We report experimental results on electromagnetically induced absorption spectra observed in the system which does not satisfy completely the conditions given by Lezama [Phys. Rev. A 59, 4732 (1999)]. We were able to observe electromagnetically induced absorption signals on all transitions in the Rb ${D}_{1}$ line, where ${F}_{g}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}_{e}{=F}_{g}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ or ${F}_{g}$ as well as open systems. These signals were only observed in certain Rabi frequency ranges for the coupling field. Present theoretical models, which are good for the case ${F}_{g}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}_{e}{=F}_{g}+1,$ considering spontaneous transfer of atomic coherences or populations have not been able to explain our experimental results obtained in both cases ${F}_{g}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}_{e}{=F}_{g}\ensuremath{-}1$ and ${F}_{e}{=F}_{g}.$
