Abstract

We consider the propagation of extremely short pulses through a dielectric thin film containing resonant atoms (two level atoms) with permanent dipole. Assuming that the film width is less than the field wave length, we can solve the wave equation and reduce the problem to a system of generalized Bloch equations describing the resonant atoms. We compute the stationary solutions for a constant irradiation of the film. Superimposing a small amplitude linear wave we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients. From these, one can then deduce the different parameters of the model. We believe this technique could be used in experiments to obtain the medium atomic and relaxation parameters.

Propagation of a videopulse through a thin layer of two-level dipolar atoms

S. O. Elyutin

The excitation of a thin layer of two-level permanent dipole moment atoms by ultimately short (less than the field oscillation period) electromagnetic pulses (videopulse) is observed. The numerical analysis of the matter equations free of the rotating wave approximation and relaxation reveals a strong influence of the local field and the Stark effect on temporal behaviour of transmitted field. Specifically, it is demonstrated that a dense film irradiated by a videopulse emits a short response with a delay much longer even than the characteristic cooperative time of the atom ensemble. It is supposed that the local field in the thin layer of permanent dipole atoms is able to re-pump the atomic subsystem. A close analogy with nonlinear pendulum motion is discussed.

Extremely short electromagnetic pulses in a resonant medium with a permanent dipole moment

Andrei I. Maimistov, Jean-Guy Caputo

The propagation of an extremely short (one cycle long) pulse of an electromagnetic field in a medium whose resonant transition is characterized by both diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the dipole-moment operator is considered theoretically. The set of Maxwell-Bloch equations without the approximation of the slowly varying envelopes is used. Two types of solutions of this set, which are found describing the steady-state propagation of an electromagnetic pulse in such a medium.

Resonant interaction of light with a thin film of three-level atoms

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

Refraction of a double-frequency optical pulse at the interface between two linear dielectrics containing a thin film of resonant atoms is considered. The dynamics of the system is treated based on the model of three-level atoms with the V -type energy diagram. Refraction of short and long (compared with the Rabi oscillation period) pulses is analyzed with allowance for local-field effects. In both cases, the shape of the pulse corresponding to one carrier wave frequency is shown to depend on the energy of the pulse with the other carrier wave frequency. In particular, both the frequency and the depth of the amplitude modulation arising in the refracted pulse are changed.

Coherent propagation of a short polarised radiation pulse in a one-dimensional resonance Bragg grating

Andrei I. Maimistov, V V Polikarpov

The propagation of an optical ultrashort pulse in a resonance Bragg grating is considered taking into account the polarisation of electromagnetic radiation. It is assumed that the grating is formed by thin films containing two-level atoms with the triply degenerate upper energy level. The system of equations is derived for the envelopes of electromagnetic pulses counterpropagating in such a grating. In the long-wavelength (continual) approximation, the system of equations generalising the known system for scalar waves is obtained. The solutions corresponding to elliptically (in particular, linearly and circularly) polarised stationary pulses are found. An arbitrary degree of ellipticity is possible only in a medium with a preliminary prepared stage of resonance atoms.
