Propagation of videopulse through a thin layer of two-level atoms possessing permanent dipole moments

Abstract

The excitation of a thin layer of two-level permanent dipole moment atoms by ultimately short (less than field oscillation period) electromagnetic pulses (videopulse) is observed. The numerical analysis of matter equations free of rotating wave approximation and relaxation reveals a strong affect of local field and Stark effect on temporal behavior oftransmitted field. Specifically it is demonstrated that a dense film irradiated by videopulse emits a short response with a delay much longer even than the characteristic cooperative time of atom ensemble. It is supposed that the local field in the thin layer of permanent dipole atoms is able to re-pump the atomic subsystem. The close analogy to nonlinear pendulum motion is discussed.

Fast Electromagnetic Response of a Thin Film of Resonant Atoms with Permanent Dipole

Jean-Guy Caputo, Elena V. Kazantseva, Andrei I. Maimistov +3 more

We consider the propagation of extremely short pulses through a dielectric thin film containing resonant atoms (two level atoms) with permanent dipole. Assuming that the film width is less than the field wave length, we can solve the wave equation and reduce the problem to a system of generalized Bloch equations describing the resonant atoms. We compute the stationary solutions for a constant irradiation of the film. Superimposing a small amplitude linear wave we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients. From these, one can then deduce the different parameters of the model. We believe this technique could be used in experiments to obtain the medium atomic and relaxation parameters.

Ultra-short pulse propagation in two-level medium possessing permanent dipole moments

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

The effects are observed of propagation of an ultimately short (in one or several oscillation) electromagnetic pulse in a medium whose resonance transition characterized both by diagonal and non-diagonal matrix elements of dipole operator. The Maxwell-Bloch set of equation is employed without the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes. The analog of MacCall and Hahn area theorem is discussed corresponding to the process of the initial ultimately short pulse break up into subpulses. A novel solution is found in the form of a stable solitary bipolar signal, whose pulse area is not zero- non-zero breather.

Coherent interaction of laser pulses in a resonant optically dense extended medium under the regime of strong field-matter coupling

V. S. Egorov, Victor Lebedev, Igor B. Mekhov +3 more

The nonstationary pump-probe interaction between short laser pulses propagating in a resonant optically dense coherent medium is considered. Special attention is paid to the case where the density of two-level particles is high enough that a considerable part of the energy of relatively weak external laser fields can be coherently absorbed and reemitted by the medium. Thus, the field of the medium reaction plays a key role in the interaction processes, which leads to collective behavior of an atomic ensemble in the strongly coupled light-matter system. Such behavior results in fast excitation interchanges between the field and a medium in the form of optical ringing, which is analogous to polariton beating in solid-state optics. This collective oscillating response, which can be treated as successive beats between light wave packets of different group velocities, is shown to significantly affect the propagation and amplification of the probe field under its nonlinear interaction with a nearly copropagating pump pulse. Depending on the probe-pump time delay, the probe transmission spectra show the appearance of either a specific doublet or coherent dip. The widths of these features are determined by the density-dependent field-matter coupling coefficient and increase during the propagation. Besides that, the widths of the coherent features, which appear close to resonance in the broadband probe spectrum, exceed the absorption-line width, since under the strong-coupling regime, the frequency of optical ringing exceeds the rate of incoherent relaxation. Contrary to stationary strong-field effects, the density- and coordinate-dependent transmission spectra of the probe manifest the importance of collective oscillations and cannot be obtained in the framework of a single-atom model.

Resonant transparency effects in an anisotropic medium with a permanent dipole moment

С. В. Сазонов

The propagation of a two-component laser pulse in an optically uniaxial medium is investigated under the conditions of the Zakharov-Benney resonance (viz., resonance of long and short waves). The short-wave ordinary component of the pulse, which is in resonance with the atomic subsystem, effectively generates a video pulse of the extraordinary wave (long-wave component). The latter dynamically detunes the ordinary pulse from the resonance and causes its phase modulation due to nonzero diagonal matrix elements of the dipole moment. An approximate operator approach is proposed for solving constitutive equations for the density matrix, which is equivalent to the asymptotic WKB method and makes it possible to reduce the analysis to solving a system of nonlinear wave equations for both components of the pulse. The possibility an extraordinary wave video pulse being generated with the help of a quasimonochromatic ordinary pulse with a longer wave-length. It is shown that, when the ordinary component dominates, the self-induced transparency mode is realized; in the opposite limit, the effect known as extraordinary transparency takes place. Solitary pulses corresponding to the latter case experience a decrease in the velocity of propagation, which is similar to that observed for self-induced transparency and practically do not change the population of quantum levels. Physical situations reducing the initial system of constituent and wave equations to familiar integrable models are analyzed.
