Abstract

Experimental results are presented about the transformation of the electromagnetically induced absorption resonance into the electromagnetically induced transparency one.The role of the depolarization of the excited state on the D2 line of Cs atoms exposed to different confinements is discussed.

Coherent Population Trapping Resonances in Cs Atomic Vapor Layers of Micrometric Thickness

A. Krasteva, Dimitar G. Slavov, S. Cartaleva

We report on a novel behavior of the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonance observed on theD2line of Cs for atoms confined in cells with micrometric thickness. With the enhancement of light intensity, the EIA resonance amplitude suffers from fast reduction, and even at very low intensity (W < 1 mW/cm2), resonance sign reversal takes place and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is observed. Similar EIA resonance transformation to EIT one is not observed in conventional cm-size cells. A theoretical model is proposed to analyze the physical processes behind the EIA resonance sign reversal with light intensity. The model involves elastic interactions between Cs atoms as well as elastic interaction of atom micrometric-cell windows, both resulting in depolarization of excited state which can lead to the new observations. The effect of excited state depolarization is confirmed also by the fluorescence (absorption) spectra measurement in micrometric cells with different thicknesses.

Inhibition of electromagnetically induced absorption due to excited-state decoherence in Rb vapor

H. Failache, Paulo Valente, G. Ban +2 more

The explanation presented by Taichenachev et al. [Phys. Rev. A $61,$ 011802 (2000)] according to which the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances observed in degenerate two-level systems are due to coherence transfer from the excited to the ground state is experimentally tested in a Hanle-type experiment observing the parametric resonance on the $D1$ line of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}.$ While EIA occurs in the $F=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=2$ transition in a cell containing only Rb vapor, collisions with a buffer gas (30 torr of Ne) cause the sign reversal of this resonance as a consequence of collisional decoherence of the excited state. A theoretical model in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results is presented.

Observation of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Dispersion-like Structure in Trapped Cs Atoms

Kyoung-Dae Kim, Mi-Rang Kwon, Jung Bog Kim +1 more

We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.

Experimental Demonstration of Electromagnetic Induced Transparency and Dispersion Effects in Cs Atom Vapour

Junxiang Zhang, Ruifang Dong, Hong Chang +3 more

The effects of the electromagnetically induced transparency and dispersion of a Λ-type three-level atomic system are experimentally measured with a vapour cell of Cs atoms. The steep dispersion at low absorption is observed. Thus a small group velocity for the probe beam is inferred from the measured dispersion curve.

Sub-Doppler and subnatural narrowing of an absorption line

Nemi Gavra, M. Rosenbluh

An experimental evidence of electromagnetically induce narrowing of an absorption line is presented. The width of this resonance is sub-Doppler and subnatural and it is confined between two closely spaced electromagnetically induced transparency windows.
