Measurement of Dispersive Properties of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Rubidium Atoms

Min Xiao, Yongqing Li, Shaozheng Jin +1 more

The dispersive properties of the atomic transition in the rubidium ${D}_{2}$ line ($5{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}5{P}_{\frac{3}{2}}$) at 780.0 nm are measured with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer when an additional coupling field at 775.8 nm is applied to an upper transition ($5{P}_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{-}5{D}_{\frac{5}{2}}$). This ladder-type system is observed to exhibit electromagnetically induced transparency together with a rapidly varying refractive index. A reduction in group velocity for the probe beam (${v}_{g}=\frac{c}{13.2}$) is inferred from the measured dispersion curve with 52.5% suppressed absorption on resonance.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium

Abraham J. Olson, Shannon K. Mayer

We investigate ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium gas. The theoretical absorption profile of a weak probe laser beam at 780.2nm (5S1∕2→5P3∕2) is modeled in the presence of a strong coupling laser beam at 776.0nm (5P3∕2→5D5∕2) and the absorption transparency window is characterized. We use two grating-feedback diode lasers and observe EIT experimentally in rubidium and compare the results to the theory. This experiment brings quantum optics into the advanced undergraduate laboratory and utilizes equipment and expertise commonly available in laboratories equipped to perform diode-laser-based absorption spectroscopy of rubidium.

Optical properties of an N-type system in Doppler-broadened multilevel atomic media of the rubidium D2 line

Yi Chen, Xiao Gang Wei, Byoung Seung HAM

We report the observations of Mollow sideband-like transparency windows in a Doppler-broadened four-level N-type system of the rubidium D2 line. A pair of enhanced transparency windows across an electromagnetically induced transparency line centre results from dressed state interactions of two coupling fields. The present observations have potential applications of using the symmetric transparency windows for optical quantum information processing such as multiple optical buffer memories and double slow-light-based enhanced cross-phase modulation. We also discuss the quantum coherent control of absorption cancellation, absorption enhancement and probe gain in a closed N-type four-level model introducing the atom flow rate determined by the population decay rate and control field intensity.

Magnetic splitting of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption spectra in a standing-wave coupled lambda-type system

Bakht Hussain, Khan Sadiq Nawaz, Muhammad Ilyas +2 more

Abstract We study the splitting of traveling wave and standing wave coupled Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Electromagnetically Induced enhanced Absorption (EIA) lines in the presence of a uniform magnetic field in an Electromagnetically Induced Grating (EIG). We realize a Λ-type system in a room-temperature Doppler-broadened buffer-gas-free, unshielded vapor cell of pure 133Cs atoms. Different orientations of the magnetic field are studied while the polarizations of the coupling and probe laser beams are arranged in the lin⊥lin configuration. The effects of the different field directions on the EIT and the EIG-induced EIA are explained in light of the existing theory. The magnetically induced high-contrast features in the EIG scheme are also discussed in comparison to the low-contrast EIT features observed for the same strengths of magnetic field.
