Abstract

Measurements of the decay time of real-time gratings in highly doped erbium fiber and analysis of the nonlinear response are presented. For strong pumping conditions the response for a nonlinear optical switch can be 50 /spl mu/s.

Erbium-doped fiber Bragg grating based all-optical switch

All-optical switching in Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber Bragg grating was investigated. The response time is not limited by the radiative relaxation but by the cooperative ion interaction induced fast nonradiative relaxation in the high concentration Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber. A signal modulation depth of 37% was measured when a 300 mW of 1480 nm pump was modulated at 5 kHz.

Measurement of gain-grating dynamics in erbium doped fibre

We have shown that strong beam coupling can occur in erbium doped fibre and that the contribution from the gain grating, or the imaginary component of the nonlinear refractive index, is much larger than the phase grating contribution. From the measured signal when a fast phase modulation is applied we can conveniently measure the response time of the real-time index grating amplified signal beams.

Nonlinear wave mixing and dynamically controlled gratings in EDFAs

J.L. Zyskind, James W. Sulhoff, Baruch Fischer +1 more

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are active fibers that can be used to generate strong nonlinearities, such as wave mixing. We consider gratings induced in the excited-state population of erbium ions, which can produce strong coupling effects. We report two- and four-wave mixing in EDFAs and a coupled-wave analysis useful in understanding these effects.

Laser-diode-pumped nonlinear switch in erbium-doped fiber

R. H. Pantell, Robert W. Sadowski, Michel J. F. Digonnet +1 more

We describe a two-mode fiber switch made of a short length of erbium-doped fiber in which switching is accomplished by a nonlinearity that is resonantly enhanced by the dopant. In a 0.95-m fiber pumped with a 1.48-μm laser diode, a 906-nm signal is switched with only 8 mW of absorbed power at a signal absorption loss of 0.25 dB.

Optical switching in erbium-doped fibers

Theoretical and experimental investigations of the nonlinear refractive index in an erbium- doped fiber are reported. We also show that an optical switch based on twin-core erbium- doped fiber can be constructed and operated at low input optical power, in the order of 1 or 2 mW. The transient response of this fiber also is examined. The switching speed can be improved by using a signal power at a wavelength close to the resonant wavelength between the excited state and the ground state.

Dynamic population gratings in highly doped erbium fibers

Sonia Melle, Óscar G. Calderón, Zhong Chang Zhuo +2 more

The efficiency of the dynamic population gratings recorded in highly doped erbium fibers has been studied. We find that the grating response increases with optical density, although the presence of erbium ion pairs in fibers with ion density of the order of 6.3×1025 m−3 degrades the grating efficiency. The experimental results have been reproduced including inhomogeneous upconversion processes in the nonlinear coupled-wave equations.
