Abstract

We have proposed a model of periodic axial magnetized hollow tube for atom guidance (1999 Opt. Commun. 160 72-4). In the present paper, an analytic solution of the magnetic field inside the tube is obtained and the transport efficiency of the cold atoms in the magnetic tube at different tube intensities of magnetization is discussed. The effect of the curvature of magnetic tube on the atom transport efficiency is also considered. We have found that the tube has a cooling effect on the transverse temperature of the transported atoms.

The periodic magnetized cylinder tube for atom guidance: quantized motion analysis

Daijun Li, Bo Ru Zhou, Zhengfeng Hu +1 more

We have analysed the transport efficiency of an atomic waveguide constructed from a periodic axially magnetized hollow tube. We took into consideration the quantized motion of the atom inside the magnetic hollow cylinder tube, which is significant for the transportation of cold atoms. We deduced the quantized motion modes of the atomic waves in the tube by the approximation of infinite potential, which is valid for cold atoms and strong magnetization. For the atomic waveguide with weak magnetization, we have calculated the tunnelling effect of the atomic wave. The adiabatic condition for the motion of cold atoms is discussed. A time orbit potential method for solving the ``zero magnetic field problem'' is proposed.

Quantum Motion of Atoms in a Magnetic Waveguide

Xia-Ji Liu, Daijun Li, Dezhong Wang +3 more

Based on the magnetic atomic guidance model proposed in our previous paper [Opt. Commun. 160(1999)72], the quantum motion of atoms in a magnetic tube is discussed in detail. The non-adiabatic loss of atoms as result of spin-flip transition and the adiabatic condition for keeping atoms in the guidable state are also analysed. The result shows that the atoms can be guided in the magnetic waveguide with a higher guiding efficiency by choosing suitable parameters of the magnetic tube.

A magnetic guide for cold atoms

James T. Richmond, Síle Nic Chormaic, B. P. Cantwell +1 more

We propose a novel method for guiding cold, neutral atoms using static magnetic fields. A theoretical study of the magnetic field produced by a tube consisting of two identical, interwound solenoids carrying equal but opposite currents is presented. This field is almost zero throughout the centre of the tube, but it increases with exponential rapidity as one approaches the walls formed by the current carrying wires. Hence, cold atoms passing through the tube may be reflected by magnetic mirror effects near the walls. Applying this technique to a free-falling cloud of magneto-optically cooled caesium atoms we hope to construct atomic guides to facilitate the manipulation of cold atomic beams.

Hollow Bessel beams for guiding atoms between vacuum chambers: a proposal and efficiency study

D. Rivero, Vinicius Soares de Angelis, C. Beli +3 more

We explore a scheme for guiding cold atoms through a hollow Bessel beam generated by a single axicon and a lens from a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap toward a science chamber. We compare the Bessel beam profiles measured along the optical axis to a numerical propagation of the beam’s wavefront, and we show how it is affected by diffraction during the passage through a long narrow funnel serving as a differential pumping tube between the chambers. We derive an approximate analytic expression for the intensity distribution of the Bessel beam and the dipolar optical force acting on the atoms. By a Monte-Carlo simulation based on a stochastic Runge–Kutta algorithm of the motion of atoms initially prepared at a given temperature, we show that a considerable enhancement of the transfer efficiency can be expected in the presence of a sufficiently intense Bessel beam.
