Abstract

We have analysed the transport efficiency of an atomic waveguide constructed from a periodic axially magnetized hollow tube. We took into consideration the quantized motion of the atom inside the magnetic hollow cylinder tube, which is significant for the transportation of cold atoms. We deduced the quantized motion modes of the atomic waves in the tube by the approximation of infinite potential, which is valid for cold atoms and strong magnetization. For the atomic waveguide with weak magnetization, we have calculated the tunnelling effect of the atomic wave. The adiabatic condition for the motion of cold atoms is discussed. A time orbit potential method for solving the ``zero magnetic field problem'' is proposed.

The periodic magnetic cylinder tube for atom guidance: transport efficiency analysis

Daijun Li, Zhengfeng Hu, Shiqun Li

We have proposed a model of periodic axial magnetized hollow tube for atom guidance (1999 Opt. Commun. 160 72-4). In the present paper, an analytic solution of the magnetic field inside the tube is obtained and the transport efficiency of the cold atoms in the magnetic tube at different tube intensities of magnetization is discussed. The effect of the curvature of magnetic tube on the atom transport efficiency is also considered. We have found that the tube has a cooling effect on the transverse temperature of the transported atoms.

Quantum Motion of Atoms in a Magnetic Waveguide

Xia-Ji Liu, Daijun Li, Dezhong Wang +3 more

Based on the magnetic atomic guidance model proposed in our previous paper [Opt. Commun. 160(1999)72], the quantum motion of atoms in a magnetic tube is discussed in detail. The non-adiabatic loss of atoms as result of spin-flip transition and the adiabatic condition for keeping atoms in the guidable state are also analysed. The result shows that the atoms can be guided in the magnetic waveguide with a higher guiding efficiency by choosing suitable parameters of the magnetic tube.

Atomic motion in hollow submicron circular cylinders

S. Al‐Awfi, M. Babiker

The motion of atoms inside a long hollow cylindrical waveguide with a circular cross section is investigated. The guide is assumed to have subwavelength dimensions, in which case the spontaneous decay process is effected only by emission of a few possible cavity modes. The characteristics of the atomic motion in the guide are explored in the presence of an excited waveguide mode. We show that the atomic motion in this case is determined by an axial channelling force and a trapping dipole force, plus a quantized light torque associated with the orbital angular momentum property of excited waveguide modes of order $\mathcal{l}>0.$ It is predicted that in addition to its axial motion, an atom subject to such a mode should be trapped radially in a vibrational state and should exhibit interesting rotational features due to the light torque, including a rotational frequency shift.

Coherent atomic waveguides from hollow optical fibers: Quantized atomic motion

Stephan Marksteiner, Craig M. Savage, P. Zoller +1 more

We present a theoretical analysis of coherent atomic motion through a straight atomic waveguide constructed from a hollow optical fiber. Atoms are guided by the evanescent light field at the fiber's interior glass-vacuum interface. The atoms' internal structure is modeled by a ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{g}}$=0 to ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{e}}$=1 transition. The atomic wave functions are determined and the loss rates due to spontaneous emission, tunneling to the wall, and nonadiabatic transitions are estimated. The influence of Casimir-Polder forces is considered. We conclude with a discussion of the feasibility of the proposed waveguides.
