A Possible Explanation for Shnoll Effect

Abstract

Shnoll and collaborators have discovered strange repeating patterns of random fluctuations of physical observables such as number n of nuclear decays in a given time interval. Periodically occurring peaks for the distribution of the number N(n) of measurements producing n events in a series of measurements as a function of n is observed instead of a single peak. The positions of the peaks are not random and the patterns depend on position and time varying periodically in time scales possibly assignable to Earth-Sun and Earth-Moon gravitational interaction. These observations suggest a modification of the expected probability distributions but it is very difficult to imagine any physical mechanism in the standard physics framework. Rather, a universal deformation of predicted probability distributions would be in question requiring something analogous to the transition from classical physics to quantum physics. The hint about the nature of the modification comes from the TGD inspired quantum measurement theory proposing a description of the notion of finite measurement resolution in terms of inclusions of so called hyper-finite factors of type II1 (HFFs) and closely related quantum groups. Also p-adic physics-another key element of TGD- is expected to be involved. A modification of

A Hypothesis on State-Dependent Nuclear Decay Rates and Emergent Randomness

Moritz Kopp

This project presents a conceptual and mathematical hypothesis concerning the apparent randomness of radioactive decay. While current nuclear physics models describe decay as a fundamentally stochastic and random process with a constant decay rate, this work explores the possibility that the randomness may come from rapidly fluctuating internal nuclear states that are not directly obsercable by measurement. The central idea is that the effective decay constant measured experimentally represents a time-averaged quantity over a distribution of internal configurations, associated with slightly different decay probabilities. In this framework, radioactive decay remains statistically exponential at observable timescales, while allowing for hidden internal dynamics consistent with established quantum mechanical principles. My work does not claim experimental verification. Instead, it aims to outline a phenomenological structure compatible with known decay laws and to identify conditions under which small, systematic deviations might arise under perturbations.

TGD inspired theory of consciousness

Matti Pitkänen

The basic ideas and implications of TGD inspired theory of consciousness are briefly summarized. The notions of quantum jump and self can be unified in the recent formulation of TGD relying on dark matter hierarchy characterized by increasing values of Planck constant. Negentropy Maximization Principle serves as a basic variational principle for the dynamics of quantum jump. The new view about the relation of geometric and subjective time leads to a new view about memory and intentional action. The quantum measurement theory based on finite measurement resolution and realized in terms of hyper-finite factors of type II1 justifies the notions of sharing of mental images and stereo-consciousness deduced earlier on basis of quantum classical correspondence. Qualia reduce to quantum number increments associated with quantum jump. Self-referentiality of consciousness can be understood from quantum classical correspondence implying a symbolic representation of contents of consciousness at space-time level updated in each quantum jump. p-Adic physics provides space-time correlates for cognition and intentionality.

How Rubbing With a Microfiber Manage to Shatter the Windshield?

Matti Pitkänen

I learned that interaction with microfiber and the material of certain windshield creates some specific style of resonance that would then shatter that material. This brings to mind opera sopranos shattering wine glasses. Why should one build complex new physics scenarios for how sopranos manage to break wine glasses? Hasn't this been understood a long time ago. But is this really the case? We are used to thinking that physics somehow mysteriously transforms from quantum to classical on some scale. Quantum coherence, which is not possible above atomic scales, would be replaced by classical coherence on long scales. If this is assumed, glass-breaking sopranos cease to look mysterious. This thinking has actually no justifications but only restates what is a fact. When you give this thinking up, the imagined self-evidences collapse. Phenomena that were undeniably a bit strange become impossible. In TGD, a new view of spacetime comes to rescue. The spacetime surface defines the coherence region in both classical and quantum sense. Field bodies make long-scale quantum coherence and classical coherence, possible. Space-time surface defines the coherence region. Classical and quantal long-scale coherence would be related to classical long-range gravitational and electromagnetic fields. Gravitational and em Planck's constants, whose values can be enormous compared to h, quantify the hypothesis. This windshield effect is just one example of many. The proposed TGD based model for the phenomenon relies on gravitational quantum coherence predicted to be possible in astrophysical scales and also possible quantum criticality. The gravitational magnetic bodies of both the Sun and Earth are assumed to play a key role. The reason is that macroscopic quantum coherence requires very large values of the effective Planck constant. It is assumed that the gravitational Compton frequency of the Sun defines a gravitational quantum coherence scale and sets a lower bound for the frequencies assignable to the acoustic oscillations inducing the instability of the windshield . One can also consider other mechanisms of macroscopic quantum coherence. Cyclotron frequencies for the endogenous magnetic field of Earth are in EEG range and would correspond to energies above thermal energy and play a key role in the TGD inspired quantum biology and might be involved with the microfibers. This would require transformation of dark cyclotron radiation to sound waves and require a ferro electret property typical for organic materials. Quantum criticality making possible a generation of large heffphases is involved and warping deformations possible for planar or nearly planar systems are considered as a possible realization of the quantum criticality.

Randomness and Reality

Geoffrey Paul Hellman

In previous technical work ([1] and [2]) on which his present paper [3] draws, Benioff has presented results conforming with the following argument-scheme: First, if we construe Quantum Mechanics as making claims to the effect that infinite outcome sequences (generated by repeated measurements on a system for a given observable in a given state) be random; and second, if a strong definition of “random” is adopted in this construal, then certain models of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZF) cannot be “carriers for the mathematics of physics”. How interesting is this? One can approach the matter on two levels, the level of the specific technical results, and the level of more general implications of this pattern of argument for understanding connections between mathematics and physics. The second more general level should be our primary focus, but it will pay at the outset to look briefly at the technical level.

Random 'choices' and the locality loophole

Stefano Pironio

It has been claimed that to close the locality loophole in a Bell experiment, random numbers of quantum origin should be used for selecting the measurement settings. This is how it has been implemented in all recent Bell experiment addressing this loophole. I point out in this note that quantum random number generators are unnecessary for such experiments and that a Bell experiment with a pseudo-random (but otherwise completely deterministic) mechanism for selecting the measurement settings, such as taking a hash function of the latest million tweets with the hashtag #quantum, would be as convincing, or even more, than one using quantum random number generators.
