Abstract

We discuss different levels of quantum correlations in the continuous variable regime and illustrate them by means of experimental results with an optical parametric oscillators. More specifically, we report the first experimental generation of bright frequency‐degenerate EPR beams with a type II OPO. Degeneracy is obtained by introducing a birefringent plate inside the cavity, resulting in phase locking. Correlation is characterized by homodyne detection.

Experimental demonstration of frequency-degenerate bright EPR beams with a self-phase-locked OPO

We report the first experimental observation of bright EPR beams produced by a type-II optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold at frequency degeneracy. The degenerate operation is obtained by introducing a birefringent plate inside the cavity resulting in phase locking. After filtering the pump noise, which plays a critical role, continuous-variable EPR correlations between the orthogonally polarized signal and idler beams are demonstrated.

Experimental investigation of amplitude and phase quantum correlations in a type II optical parametric oscillator above threshold: from nondegenerate to degenerate operation

Julien Laurat, Laurent Longchambon, Claude Fabre +1 more

We describe a stable type II optical parametric oscillator operated above threshold that provides 9.7 +/- 0.5 dB (89%) of quantum noise reduction on the intensity difference of the signal and idler modes. We also report the first experimental study, to our knowledge, by homodyne detection of the generated bright two-mode state in the case of frequency-degenerate operation obtained by the introduction of a birefringent plate inside an optical cavity.

Full characterization of bipartite entangled states by means of a single homodyne detector

Virginia D’Auria, Salvatore Antonio Fornaro, A. Porzio +2 more

The authors address the complete experimental characterization of bipartite Gaussian entangled states. Continuous-wave (CW) entangled light beams are generated by a frequency degenerate type-II optical parametric oscillator (OPO) below threshold and their covariance matrix (CM) is fully reconstructed by using a novel scheme that involves a single homodyne detector.

Macroscopic polarization entanglement in type II OPO

Roberta Zambrini, A. Gatti, L. A. Lugiato +1 more

The paper reports on the investigation on to which extent the microscopic polarization properties survive at a macroscopic level, in presence of a continuous flux of photons, in a transverse spatially extended system. A prototype device to generate polarization entangled beams is a quadratic crystal in the type II phase matching configuration. The spectral brightness can be increased by means of a resonant cavity (optical parametric oscillator) . Quantum correlations below threshold is calculated analytically taking into account the walk-off effect between the (ordinary polarized) signal and the (extraordinary polarized) idler. In this regime the average of the signal field is zero, but the far-field (FF) intensity distribution is dominated by two undamped rings (quantum images, noisy precursors of the pattern), whose centers are displaced along the walk-off direction. In the first part, the effect of the selection of different polarization components on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations is studied; this is a generalization of the first experimental realization of the EPR paradox for continuous variables in an OPO, taking now into account the transverse profile of the filed. In the second part, the correlations in other continuous variables, the Stokes parameters are then analyzed.

Continuous-variable entanglement of phase-locked light beams

Hayk H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We explore in detail the possibility of intracavity generation of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light beams under mode phase-locked conditions. We show that such quantum states can be generated in a self-phase-locked nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) based on type II phase-matched down-conversion combined with a linear mixer of two orthogonally polarized modes of the subharmonics in a cavity. A quantum theory of this device, recently realized in the experiment, is developed for both subthreshold and above-threshold operational regimes. We show that the system providing high-level phase coherence between two generated modes, unlike the ordinary NOPO, also exhibits different types of quantum correlations between photon numbers and phases of these modes. We quantify the CV entanglement as two-mode squeezing and show that the maximal degree of the integral two-mode squeezing (which is $50%$ relative to the level of vacuum fluctuations) is achieved at the pump field intensity close to the generation threshold of a self-phase-locked NOPO, provided that the constant of linear coupling between the two polarizations is much less than the mode detunings. The peculiarities of CV entanglement for the case of unitary, nondissipative dynamics of the system under consideration are also cleared up.
