Abstract

We explore in detail the possibility of intracavity generation of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light beams under mode phase-locked conditions. We show that such quantum states can be generated in a self-phase-locked nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) based on type II phase-matched down-conversion combined with a linear mixer of two orthogonally polarized modes of the subharmonics in a cavity. A quantum theory of this device, recently realized in the experiment, is developed for both subthreshold and above-threshold operational regimes. We show that the system providing high-level phase coherence between two generated modes, unlike the ordinary NOPO, also exhibits different types of quantum correlations between photon numbers and phases of these modes. We quantify the CV entanglement as two-mode squeezing and show that the maximal degree of the integral two-mode squeezing (which is $50%$ relative to the level of vacuum fluctuations) is achieved at the pump field intensity close to the generation threshold of a self-phase-locked NOPO, provided that the constant of linear coupling between the two polarizations is much less than the mode detunings. The peculiarities of CV entanglement for the case of unitary, nondissipative dynamics of the system under consideration are also cleared up.

Entangled self-phase locked states of light

We explore in detail the possibility of generation of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light fields with well-localized phases. We show that such quantum states, called entangled self-phase locked states, can be generated in nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) based on a type-II phase-matched down-conversion combined with polarization mixer in a cavity. A quantum theory of this device, recently realized in the experiment, is developed for both sub-threshold and above-threshold operational regimes. We show that the system providing relative phase coherence between two generated modes also exhibits different types of quantum correlations between photon numbers and phases of these modes. We quantify the entanglement as two-mode squeezing and show that CV entanglement is realized for both unitary, non-dissipative dynamics and for dissipative NOPO in the entire range of pump field intensities.

Time-modulated type-II optical parametric oscillator: Quantum dynamics and strong Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement

Hayk H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We investigate semiclassical dynamics and quantum properties of light beams generated in time-modulated nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO). Having in view production of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light beams we propose two experimentally feasible schemes of NOPO: (i) driven by continuously modulated pump field; (ii) under action of a periodic sequence of identical laser pulses. It is shown that the time modulation of pump field amplitude essentially improves the degree of CV entanglement in NOPO. On the whole the level of integral two-mode squeezing, which characterizes the degree of CV entanglement, goes below the standard limit established in an ordinary NOPO with monochromatic pumping. We develop semiclassical and quantum theories of these devices for both below- and above-threshold regimes of generation. Properties of CV entanglement for various operational regimes of the devices are discussed in the time domain in application to time-resolved quantum information technologies. Our analytical results are in well agreement with the results of numerical simulation and support a concept of CV entangled states of time-modulated light beams.

Quadrature entanglement and photon-number correlations accompanied by phase-locking

Hayk H. Adamyan, N. H. Adamyan, Suren B. Manvelyan +1 more

We investigate quantum properties of phase-locked light beams generated in a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) with an intracavity waveplate. This investigation continues our previous analysis presented in Phys. Rev. A 69, 053814 (2004), and involves problems of continuous-variable quadrature entanglement in the spectral domain, photon-number correlations as well as the signatures of phase-locking in the Wigner function. We study the role of phase-localizing processes on the quantum correlation effects. The peculiarities of phase-locked NOPO in the self-pulsing instability operational regime are also cleared up. The results are obtained in the $P$-representation as a quantum-mechanical calculation in the framework of stochastic equations of motion, as well as by numerical simulation based on the method of quantum state diffusion.

Generation of two-color polarization-entangled optical beams with a self-phase-locked two-crystal optical parametric oscillator

Julien Laurat, G. Keller, Claude Fabre +1 more

A device to generate polarization-entangled light in the continuous-variable regime is introduced. It consists of an optical parametric oscillator with two type-II phase-matched nonlinear crystals orthogonally oriented, associated with birefringent elements for adjustable linear coupling. We give in this paper a theoretical study of its classical and quantum properties. It is shown that two optical beams with adjustable frequencies and well-defined polarization can be emitted. The Stokes parameters of the two beams are entangled. The principal advantage of this setup is the possibility to directly generate polarization-entangled light without the need of mixing four modes on beamsplitters as required in current experimental setups. This device opens up different directions for the study of light-matter interfaces and a generation of multimode nonclassical light and higher dimensional phase space.

Quantum-feedback-induced enhancement of continuous-variable entanglement in a self-phase-locked type-II nondegenerate optical parameter oscillator

Gao‐xiang Li, Huatang Tan, Sha‐Sha Ke

We investigate the enhancement of the intracavity entanglement of a self-phase-locked type-II nondegenerate optical parameter oscillator (SPL NOPO) via homodyne-mediated quantum feedback. It is found that the feedback can effectively enhance the squeezing, entanglement, and purity of the two-mode field in the SPL NOPO. Especially for an ordinary NOPO, our feedback scheme can simulate a standard two-mode squeezed vacuum environment and a pure steady two-mode squeezed vacuum cavity field can be generated, different from the scheme proposed by Mancini [Phys. Rev. A 73, 010304(R) (2006)] in which only a mixed two-mode entangled state is generated.

Active locking and entanglement in type II optical parametric oscillators

J. Ruiz-Rivas, Germán J. de Valcárcel, Carlos Navarrete–Benlloch

Type II optical parametric oscillators are amongst the highest-quality sources of quantum-correlated light. In particular, when pumped above threshold, such devices generate a pair of bright orthogonally-polarized beams with strong continuous-variable entanglement. However, these sources are of limited practical use, because the entangled beams emerge with different frequencies and a diffusing phase difference. It has been proven that the use of an internal wave-plate coupling the modes with orthogonal polarization is capable of locking the frequencies of the emerging beams to half the pump frequency, as well as reducing the phase-difference diffusion, at the expense of reducing the entanglement levels. In this work we characterize theoretically an alternative locking mechanism: the injection of a laser at half the pump frequency. Apart from being less invasive, this method should allow for an easier real-time experimental control. We show that such an injection is capable of generating the desired phase locking between the emerging beams, while still allowing for large levels of entanglement. Moreover, we find an additional region of the parameter space (at relatively large injections) where a mode with well defined polarization is in a highly amplitude-squeezed state.
