Optical polarization modulation by competing atomic coherence effects in a degenerate four-level Yb atomic system

Sung Jong Park, Chang Yong Park, Tai Hyun Yoon

A scheme of optical polarization modulation of a linearly polarized infrared probe field is studied in a degenerate four-level Yb atomic system. We have observed an anomalous transmission spectra of two circular polarization components of the probe field exhibiting an enhanced two-photon absorption and a three-photon gain with comparable magnitude, leading to the lossless transmission and enhanced circular dichroism. We carried out a proof-of-principle experiment of fast optical polarization modulation in such a system by modulating the polarization state of the coupling field. The observed enhanced two-photon absorption and three-photon gain of the probe field are due to the result of competing atomic coherence effects.

Experimental verification of statistical correlation for bosons: Another kind of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Wei-Tao Liu, Wei Wu, Ping‐Xing Chen +2 more

According to the identity principle in quantum theory, states of a system consisted of identical particles should maintain unchanged under interchanging between two of the particles. The whole wavefunction should be symmetrized or antisymmetrized. This leads to statistical correlations between particles, which exhibit observable effects. We design an experiment to directly observe such effects for bosons. The experiment is performed with two photons. The effect of statistical correlations is clearly observed when the wavepackets of two photons are completely overlapped, and this effect varies with the degree of overlapping. The results of our experiment substantiate the statistical correlation in a simple way. Experiment reported here can also be regarded as another kind of two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, occurs in the polarization degree of freedom of photon.

Analysis on the Mechanism of Photon Splitting Polarization Pairing and Its Experimental Verification Scheme

Jiaqing Yan

The Canadian photon splitting experiment on two photon polarization correlation has long been regarded by mainstream physics as important experimental evidence for quantum entanglement and spooky action at a distance. However, the underlying physical mechanism of this effect lacks corresponding descriptions of entity evolution processes, and existing explanations mostly rely on mathematical fitting. Based on the Light Origin Theory, this paper abandons non classical assumptions such as quantum superposition and quantum entanglement. By applying the scalpel like division mechanism of crystal lattices, the collision perturbation effect between photons and atomic lattices, and the conservation rule of polarization angle matching, this paper provides a complete physical interpretation for co polarized and orthogonally polarized distributions of twin photons. This paper establishes two fundamental optical criteria: first, photon energy rise fall, fusion and splitting must satisfy the precondition of consistent polarization angles; second, collisions between photons and material atoms can alter photon polarization angles. Based on the above mechanisms, this paper clarifies that only two stable polarization pairing modes exist after photon splitting. A thought experiment with a triangular prism optical path is designed to test the inference that atomic lattice collisions change photon polarization angles. This research revises partial theoretical deviations in traditional optics and provides a brand new classical entity based physical interpretation for the laws governing photon photon interactions.
