Abstract

The quadrupole moment of the 4d (2)D(5/2) level in 88Sr+ has been measured to be 2.6(3)ea(2)(0), where a(0) is the Bohr radius and e the elementary charge. A single laser-cooled strontium ion was confined in an end cap trap with a variable dc quadrupole potential, and measurements were made on the 5s (2)S(1/2)-4d (2)D(5/2) transition at 674 nm using a femtosecond optical frequency comb. This work shows that measurements of the unperturbed 88Sr+ transition frequency with sub-Hz uncertainty are possible and is important in understanding the reproducibility of ion trap optical frequency standards.

Hertz-Level Measurement of the Optical Clock Frequency in a Single 88 Sr + Ion

Helen S. Margolis, G. P. Barwood, Guozheng Huang +4 more

The frequency of the 5s 2S(1/2)-4d 2D(5/2) electric quadrupole clock transition in a single, trapped, laser-cooled 88Sr+ ion has been measured by using an optical frequency comb referenced to a cesium fountain primary frequency standard. The frequency of the transition is measured as 444,779,044,095,484.6 (1.5) hertz, with a fractional uncertainty within a factor of 3 of that of the cesium standard. Improvements required to obtain a cesium-limited frequency measurement are described and are expected to lead to a 88Sr+ optical clock with stability and reproducibility exceeding that of the primary cesium standard.

High-resolution spectroscopy of the88Sr+single ion optical frequency standard

P. Dubé, Alan A. Madej, J. E. Bernard +1 more

The present decade has seen great advances in optical frequency standards following the development of femtosecond laser frequency combs. With this technology, combined with a stable and narrow probe laser source (50-100 Hz linewidth), we made a systematic study of the 5s 2S1/2-4d 2D5/2 (S-D) transition frequency of the 88Sr+ ion as a function of the quantization axis in the trap. This study revealed the presence of systematic shifts caused by residual micromotion in our rf Paul trap and led to an evaluation of those shifts. Also, a method was developed based on the measurement of the Zeeman spectrum of the clock transition to cancel the electric quadrupole shift caused by patch potentials on the trap electrodes. From these results, we also determined the absolute frequency of the S-D clock transition frequency at 674 nm with a fractional frequency uncertainty of 3.4 × 10-14. We have since made improvements to our probe laser system and have observed 5 Hz Fourier transform limited linewidths on a Zeeman component of the S-D transition of the 88Sr+ ion. To observe such a narrow transition it is essential to have a known and well behaved drift of the laser frequency during the few minutes it takes to measure the ion resonance using the quantum jump signal. Our approach to minimize the drift rate and its sensitivity to temperature fluctuations has been to stabilize the cavity at the temperature where its coefficient of thermal expansion is zero. We will present an overview of our recent progress made on the frequency standard based on the laser-cooled and trapped single ion of 88Sr+.

Single, trapped Sr^+ atom: laser cooling and quantum jumps by means of the 4d^2D_5/2–5s^2S_1/2 transition

Alan A. Madej, J. D. Sankey

A single Sr+ atom was confined in a radio-frequency quadrupole trap and laser cooled with resonant laser light. Examination of the transition Doppler profile indicated an ion kinetic temperature of less than 500 mK. Quantum jumps into and out of the metastable 4d(2)D(5/2) level were observed by laser excitation on the electric-quadrupole-allowed transition from the ground state at 674 nm. The dark and bright periods in the strong fluorescence showed variations owing to the applied driving field on the electric-quadrupole transition. These results provide an improved determination of tau = 372 +/- 25 msec for the natural metastable-state lifetime.

An optical frequency chain referenced to a Cs atomic clock has been used to measure directly the frequency of the electric quadrupole allowed $5s^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{-}4d^{2}D_{5/2}$ transition at 445 THz in a single, trapped, and laser cooled ${}^{88}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ ion. A transition frequency, ${f}_{S\ensuremath{-}D}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}444779044095.4\mathrm{kHz}$ with an estimated standard uncertainty of 0.2 kHz has been determined. Intrinsic offsets of the probed ion transition in the current experiment are calculated to be at the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}15}$ level.

Comparison of two single-ion optical frequency standards at the hertz level

T. Schneider, Chr. Tamm, E. Peik

We describe experimental investigations of an optical frequency standard based on a single laser-cooled /sup 171/Yb/sup +/ ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The electric quadrupole transition from the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2 /(F=0) ground state to the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/(F=2) state at 435.5 nm is used as the reference transition. The transition was resolved with a Fourier-limited width of approximately 30 Hz. In order to investigate the instability and accuracy of a future frequency standard based on the reference transition, a first experiment was done comparing two laser frequencies stabilized individually to two separate ions in different traps. As a result we found a relative frequency instability /spl sigma//sub y/(640 s)=1.5/spl middot/10/sup -15/ for the difference of the two laser frequencies. We also derived a first estimate /spl Theta/(/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/)=(3.9/spl plusmn/1.9)ea/sub 0//sup 2/ for the electric quadrupole moment of the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ state.

Optical frequency standard based on a trapped171Yb+ion

Chr. Tamm, T. Schneider, E. Peik

We describe experimental investigations on an optical frequency standard based on a single laser cooled 171Yb+ ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The 435.5 nm electric-quadrupole transition from the 2S1/2(F=0) groudn state to the 2D3/2(F=2) state is probed using a diode laser system whose short-term frequency stability is derived from an environmentally isolated ULE cavity. The transition is resolved with a Foruier-limited full halfwidth of approximately 30 Hz. The absolute optical transition frequency is determined using a femtosecond frequency comb generator and a Cs fountain clock as the frequency reference. The measured frequency value is 688 358 979 321 Hz at an ambient blackbody radiation field of 300 K. The 1σ fractional uncertainty of this frequency measurement is 1×10-14.
