Abstract

We report on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a V-type system in cesium. We investigated the induced EIT as a function of the pump-laser power for different hyperfine components on the D1-D2 lines. Adding repumping light on the D1 transition we observed 2% single pass gain.

Single scan measurement of light induced birefringence, electromagnetically induced transparency, and absorption in the cesium D2 line

R.-H. Rinkleff, L. Spani Molella, K. Danzmann

The optical properties of a cesium atomic beam driven on a resonant hyperfine transition was studied as a function of the probe laser frequency. Absorption, EIT, and light induced birefringence were found and explained.

Determining hyperfine transitions with electromagnetically induced transparency and optical pumping

Yi-Chi Lee, Chin‐Chun Tsai, Yung-Yung Chang +2 more

A system is designed to observe the phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency and optical pumping in cesium D 1 and D 2 lines at room temperature. When a pump laser is frequency-locked on the top of a hyperfine transition and the frequency of the probe laser scans over another hyperfine transition, a spectrum of V-type electromagnetically induced transparency or an optical pumping can be observed depending on whether the two lasers share a common ground state. Therefore, these results can be used to identify the unknown hyperfine transitions of the D 1 line transitions. For educational purposes, this system is helpful for understanding the electromagnetically induced transparency and the optical pumping.

Experimental observation of pump–probe spectra of caesium D 2 line with a vapour cell

Yanhua Wang, Yang Hai-Jing, Tiancai Zhang +1 more

Pump?probe spectra of caesium D2 line are experimentally investigated in a Cs atomic vapour cell with co-propagating orthogonal linearly-polarized pump and probe laser beams. Absorption-reduction dips duo to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in multi-?-type Zeeman sublevels of 6 S1/2 F=3?6 P3/2 F'=2 hyperfine transition and absorption-enhanced peaks due to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in 6 S1/2 F=4?6 P3/2 F'=5 hyperfine transition are demonstrated. With detuned pump beam abnormal sign-reversed signals inside the EIT dip and the EIA peak are clearly observed.

Decoherence of electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic vapor

Eden V. Figueroa, Frank Vewinger, J. Appel +1 more

We report characterization of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances in the D1 line of (87)Rb under various experimental conditions. The dependence of the EIT linewidth on the power of the pump field was investigated at various temperatures for the ground states of the lambda system associated with different hyperfine levels of the atomic 5S(1/2) state as well as magnetic sublevels of the same hyperfine level. Strictly linear behavior was observed in all cases. A theoretical analysis of our results shows that dephasing in the ground state is the main source of decoherence, with population exchange playing a minor role.

Double-resonance optical-pumping effect and ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency signal without Doppler background in cesium atomic vapour cell

Baodong Yang, Jing Gao, Qiangbing Liang +3 more

In a Doppler-broadened ladder-type cesium atomic system (6S 1/2 -6P 3/2 -8S 1/2 ), this paper characterizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different experimental arrangements, and investigates the influence of the double-resonance optical-pumping (DROP) effect on EIT in both arrangements. When the probe laser is weak, DROP is explicitly suppressed. When the probe laser is moderate, population of the intermediate level (6P 3/2 F ' = 5) is remarkable, therefore DROP is mixed with EIT. An interesting bimodal spectrum with the broad component due to DROP and the narrow part due to EIT has been clearly observed in cesium 6S 1/2 F = 4−6P 3/2 F ' = 5−8S 1/2 F '' = 4 transitions.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Cesium Vapor with Probe Pulses on the Single-Photon Level

David Höckel, Oliver J. Benson

We perform electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) experiments in cesium vapor with pulses on the single-photon level for the first time. This was made possible by an extremely large total suppression of the EIT coupling beam by 118 dB mainly due to a newly developed triple-pass planar Fabry-Pérot etalon filter. Slowing and shaping of single-photon light pulses as well as the generation of pulses suitable for quantum key distribution applications and testing of approaches for single photon storage is demonstrated. Our results extend single-photon EIT to the particularly interesting wavelength of the Cs D1 line.
