Storage of intense optical pulses in solids

Abstract

Possibility to store optical information in media with fast relaxations is studied in case of arbitrary intensities of probe and control pulses. Analytical solution of the self-consistent system of equations for propagation and density matrix is obtained with allowance for the first non-stationary corrections. A new scheme of storage is proposed which allows an essential reduction of the optical length needed for storage.

We propose a scheme of storage of intense pulses that allows a significant reduction of the storage length with respect to standard schemes. This scheme is particularly adapted to store optical information in media with fast relaxations.

Influence of rapid relaxation on light storage

Gor Nikoghosyan, Gayane G. Grigoryan

By solving the self-consistent system of Maxwell and derithty matrix equations in the case when the relaxation time is much shorter than the pulse duration, we obtain an analytical solution for the probe pulse propagation. This solution allows one to analyze the process of the information storage not only qualitatively, but also quantitatively In particular, it explains the fact that in well-known experiments only fractions of pulses were stored The conditions for effective storage are obtained.

Influence of relaxation on propagation, storage, and retrieving of light pulses in a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency

Gor Nikoghosyan, Gayane Grigoryan

By solving the self-consistent system of Maxwell and density-matrix equations in the case where the time of relaxations to the ground state is much shorter than the pulse duration we derive an analytical solution for the probe pulse propagation. We obtain an excellent consistency of our analytical solution with direct numerical integration. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of analytical solution and show that under certain conditions it passes to the well-known dark-state polariton propagation regime. We analyzed the dynamics of propagation and, in particular, explain the fact that in the well-known experiments only fractions of pulses were stored.

Storage and retrieval of ultraslow optical solitons in coherent atomic system

Zhengyang Bai, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the propagation of intense probe pulses in a lifetime broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. We find that ultraslow optical solitons formed by a balance between dispersion and nonlinearity can be stored and retrieved in the system by switching off and on a control field.Such pulses are robust during storage and retrieval, and hence may have potential applications in optical and quantum information processing.

Adiabatic Dynamical Control Physics of Dielectric Media

R. Grobe

We summarize recent developments in the area of the coherent propagation of laser pulses through dielectric media. We will show that the principle of dynamical adiabaticity opens new avenues to control the non-perturbative .and resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a three-level medium.Examples include the formation of stable wave forms that can travel through optical dielectric media in a loss-free manner with arbitrary pulse shapes, novel possibilities to store optical information in dielectric media in the form of spatially dependent excitations and techniques to exploit this information to control laser pulse envelopes.

Limits on optical pulse compression and delay bandwidth product in electromagnetically induced transparency media

Peter Jänes, Jonas Tidström, Lars Thylen

Delay bandwidth products (DBPs) and physical pulselengths obtainable in media exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are analyzed. The study is performed in stationary media as well as for dynamic storing of light pulses in such media. In the latter case, the dispersion inherent in storage and readout of the pulses is analyzed. It is shown that absorption and the group velocity dispersion (GVD) are limiting factors. Analytical expressions for the minimum compressed pulselength and DBP are derived, and these expressions show good agreement with simulations of pulse propagation in EIT media.
