Abstract

We summarize recent developments in the area of the coherent propagation of laser pulses through dielectric media. We will show that the principle of dynamical adiabaticity opens new avenues to control the non-perturbative .and resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a three-level medium.Examples include the formation of stable wave forms that can travel through optical dielectric media in a loss-free manner with arbitrary pulse shapes, novel possibilities to store optical information in dielectric media in the form of spatially dependent excitations and techniques to exploit this information to control laser pulse envelopes.

Propagation and storing of light in optically modified atomic media

Jarosław Zaremba

Coherent interactions of laser light with atomic ensembles allow one to modify dispersive properties of a medium and lead to new optical phenomena. Studies of the controlled light propagation and storing in such media have recently become a dynamically developing field of research motivated both by the fundamental character of the processes and by potential applications. This article briefly reviews basic theoretical approach to the dynamics of the propagation of laser pulses in optically modified media. The method and the physical processes are discussed that allow one to slow down the group velocity of laser pulse to zero (stopping of light), to transfer the state of a light pulse to atomic coherences and to restore the pulse. The interpretation of these phenomena in the formalism of dark-state polaritons is presented. Examples of possible coherent manipulations on a stored light are also discussed.

Form-stable pulse propagation in 3-level media: adiabatons and matched pulses

Michael Fleischhauer

The resonant interaction of pulse-pairs with multi-level atoms has attracted some attention in recent time because of the possibility of a quasi-loss-free propagation in otherwize optically thick media. The pulse-pair propagation in Λ-type atoms as shown in Figs. 1 is here discussed in terms of the adiabatic coupled and decoupled superpositions of the lower levels.

Long distance propagation of resonant pulses under conditions of induced transparency

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Ivan V. Timofeev

Summary form only given. The possibility to render optically thick media transparent for coherent laser radiation via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) gained considerable interest over recent years. Here we study a propagation of two short laser pulses in an absorbing three-level medium under conditions of EIT. We consider two cases: the coherent population trapping (CPT) and the adiabatic population transfer (APT).

Coherent propagation of two-photon quasi-resonant pulses in a medium of multi-level atoms

Farhad H. M. Faisal

Coherent propagation of a circularly polarized pulse which is two-photon quasi-resonant with a medium of multi-level atoms is considered in the adiabatic following limit. The relevant pair of non-linear coupled partial differential equations are solved exactly for arbitrary pulse shapes. The development of the envelope and the phase of the pulse as it propagates through the medium is described analytically. Perturbation theoretical results are shown to apply only for small intensity or small distance of propagation or both. Qualitatively different results apply for higher intensities and longer distances of propagation. These include strong self-phase-modulation effects as well as reshaping of the pulse envelope.

Transmission of dressed fields in three-level media

Joseph H. Eberly

The interaction of two incident laser pulses with a dielectric medium composed of three-level atoms is discussed. Particular attention is paid to various effects connected with the well known dark state or trapping state of lambda systems. Strong- and weak-field adiabatic processes are considered, taking note of the two-photon adiabatic criterion and counter-intuitive pulse sequencing. Results include two-photon absorption formulae two-photon soliton solutions, and graphs showing the propagation of the recently discovered two-photon trapping states of the field.

Controlled excitation of selected regions inside dielectric media

Jennifer R. Csesznegi, Brian K. Clark, R. Grobe

We propose an optical scheme to control the degree of excitation of spatially localized regions inside an absorbing three-level medium using two suitably delayed laser pulses. Only selected localized regions inside the medium are changed by the pulses, the remaining medium remains unchanged in its ground state. We present an approximate but analytical theory of the coupled Liouville and Maxwell equations and propose an experimental verification of this control excitation scheme for potassium vapor.
