Abstract

We measure the spontaneous emission lifetime of the D5/2 level of a single Ca+-ion by pii-pulse excitation and quantum state detection. As the trapped ion is well localized we map the standing-wave cavity vacuum field

Spontaneous Emission Lifetime of a Single Trapped Ca+ Ion in a High Finesse Cavity

Axel Kreuter, Christoph Becher, Gavin P. T. Lancaster +7 more

We investigate the spontaneous emission lifetime of a single trapped (40)Ca+ ion placed at different positions in the vacuum standing wave inside a high finesse cavity which is stabilized to the atomic transition. The lifetime is measured by quantum state detection after pi-pulse excitation. The result for the natural lifetime of the D(5/2) metastable state of 1161(22) ms agrees, within 1 standard deviation, with the most precise published value. We observe a reduction of the spontaneous emission lifetime of approximately 15% in the node of the vacuum field.

Coherent coupling of a single Ca/sup +/ ion to a high finesse optical cavity field

Christoph Becher, Axel Kreuter, A.B. Mundt +6 more

Two experiments are performed to investigate the coherent interaction of a single Ca/sup +/ ion and a cavity field: first, Rabi oscillations are excited with short resonant laser pulses injected into the cavity, and second, change of the spontaneous emission rate are measured from the metastable D/sub 5/2 /level due to the cavity-enhanced vacuum field.

Deterministic ion-photon interaction in a cavity

Matthias Keller, Gerhard R. Guthöhrlein, Birgit Lange +3 more

Summary form only given. In a recent experiment, we have investigated the interaction between a single /sup 40/Ca/sup +/-ion stored in a radio-frequency trap and the field of an optical cavity. One mode of the cavity was tuned to the S/sub 1/2/ to P/sub 1/2/ transition of singly ionized calcium at a wavelength of /spl lambda/ = 397 nm. Using laser Doppler cooling in conjunction with the strong confinement of the ion in an effective harmonic potential (frequency 1.1 MHz), the extension of the ion's wave packet was reduced to 60 nm, corresponding to /spl lambda//7, in the direction of the cavity axis. The position of the ion in the cavity was determined by observing the fluorescent light emitted by the ion after excitation in the cavity field. A large fluorescent rate indicated a position of high intracavity intensity. An image of the standing wave pattern obtained in this way is shown. Note that throughout the measurement the ion remains stationary and the cavity is moved to scan the relative position of ion and field.
