Abstract

Investigations were made of the spectral and luminescence properties of the Ce 3+ ion in a BaY 2 F 8 crystal. Amplification of coherent radiation (λ = 0.345 μm) was achieved due to the 5 d 1 4 f n – 1 –4 f n interconfigurational transition when this was excited by XeCl laser radiation (λ = 0.308 μm).

Spectral characteristics of the thulium ion and cascade generation of stimulated radiation in a YAlO3:Tu3+:Cr3+crystal

A O Ivanov, I. V. Mochalov, Alexandra M. Tkachuk +2 more

Stimulated emission was obtained from Tu 3+ ions in YAlO 3 crystals doped with 1.0 at. % Tu and 0.1 at. % Cr. The stimulated radiation was generated by the 3 F 4 → 3 H 5 (λ 1 )→ 3 H 5 → 3 H 6 (λ 2 ) cascade at wavelengths λ 1 = 2.34 μ and λ 1 =1.93 μ and the threshold was 3.5 J/cm at 90 °K. A scheme of radiative and nonradiative transitions between the terms was constructed. The absorption and luminescence spectra recorded at 4.2 °K were used to derive the Stark splitting scheme of the 3 H 4 and 3 H 6 terms of the thulium ion.

Measurement of excited-state-absorption loss for Ce3+ in Y3Al5O12 and implications for tunable 5d→4f rare-earth lasers

Ralph R. Jacobs, William F. Krupke, Marvin J. Weber

Broad bandwidth 5d→4f transitions in Ce3+ have been considered for tunable laser action. In this letter, optical probe measurements of excited Ce3+ ions in Y3Al5O12 show that stimulated emission in the 550–610-nm region is not possible at 295 K because of excited-state absorption. Transient measurements demonstrate that part of this loss has ≈75-ns lifetime and is associated with absorption from the lowest 5d level; a longer-lifetime loss is also observed. The excited-state-absorption loss is reduced at lower temperatures.

Two-Photon Excitations of Higher 5d States in Ce3+:CaF2

Swapan Kumar Gayen, Gerald J. Pogatshnik, D. S. Hamilton

The 4f-->5d near-ultraviolet transitions in Ce3+:CaF2 are dipole allowed in one-photon absorption (OPA) and first-order parity-forbidden for two-photon absorption (TPA). A relaxation of the parity selection rule due to odd crystal-field components has previously been observed1 in the TPA from the 4f ground state to the lowest 5d state. In this paper the TPA measurements are extended to include transitions to the higher 5d states.

Spectroscopic and laser cooling results on Yb3+-doped BaY2F8 single crystal

Stefano Bigotta, Daniela Parisi, Lucia Bonelli +3 more

Anti-Stokes cooling has been observed in an Yb3+-doped BaY2F8 single crystal. Single crystals have been grown by the Czochralski technique. The absorption spectra and the emission properties have been measured at room temperature and at 10K. The energy positions of the Stark sublevels of the ground and the excited state manifolds have been determined and separated from the vibronic substructure. The intrinsic decay time of the F5∕22 level has been measured taking care of avoiding the effect of multiple reabsorption processes. The theoretical and experimental cooling efficiencies of Yb:BaY2F8 are evaluated and compared with respect to those of the most frequently investigated materials for laser cooling. A temperature drop of almost 4K was measured by pumping the crystal with 3W of laser radiation at ∼1025nm in single pass configuration with a cooling efficiency of ∼3%.

New laser transition in a Pr3+:RbPb2Cl5crystal in the 2.3—2.5-μm range

А. Г. Охримчук, Leonid N. Butvina, Evgenii M Dianov +3 more

Lasing at the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition of the Pr 3+ ion in a nonhygroscopic Pr 3+ :RbPb 2 Cl 5 crystal is obtained for the first time at room temperature and the luminescent and lasing properties of the crystal are studied. The maximum differential cross section for stimulated emission in the 2.31—2.59-μm band of the 3 F 3 — 3 H 5 transition is found to be 1.7 × 10 -19 cm 2 and the lifetime of the 3 F 3 upper laser level is 0.11 ms.

Emission of λ≈2 μ stimulated radiation by holmium in aluminum holmium garnet crystals

A O Ivanov, I. V. Mochalov, Alexandra M. Tkachuk +2 more

Stimulated emission was obtained from Ho 3+ ions ( 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 transition) in a new single-component self-activated system with aluminum holmium garnet crystals grown by the Czochralski method. The thresholds of the λ= 2.129 and 2.122 laser emission at 90 °K were 9 and 14 J/cm, respectively. The absorption and luminescence spectra were used in the derivation of the Stark splitting scheme of the 5 I 7 and 5 I 8 terms. The lifetime of the 5 I 7 term was determined (τ≈10 msec).
