Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold atoms

Abstract

Summary form only given. We report here measurements of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a sample of cold trapped Rb/sup 87/ atoms. By using cold atoms, we avoid complications associated with Doppler broadening, which often exist in similar experiments performed with room-temperature vapors. The measurements were made on an 2mm-diameter sample of -10/sup 8/ laser-cooled Rb/sup 87/ atoms collected in a standard magnetooptic trap.

Experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level N-type scheme in /sup 87/Rb

Vasily M. Entin, I. I. Ryabtsev

Summary form only given. The results on experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level N-type scheme are presented. The experiments were performed on the D/sub 2/ absorption line of /sup 87/Rb. An experimental setup was based on two independent external cavity diode lasers (ECDL). The copropagating orthogonally polarized laser beams were passed through a rubidium cell. The frequency of one of the lasers (laser 1) was fixed and tuned to the center of the Doppler broadened group of transitions 5S/sub 1/2/(F=2)/spl rarr/5P/sub 3/2/(F=1,2,3).

Observation of Doppler-free electromagnetically induced transparency in atoms selected optically with specific velocity

Hoon Yu, Kwan-Su Kim, Jung Dong Kim +2 more

We observed an electromagnetically induced transparency signal in a four-level system with optically selected rubidium atoms at specific velocities in a room-temperature vaporized cell. Since the atoms behave like cold atoms in the selected atomic view, the observed signals coincide with a trapped atomic system. According to this result, we can observe Doppler-free signals, which correspond from 1.2 to 1.0 K in a Doppler-broadened medium. And the selected atoms have velocity components of \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}(131 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 3) MHz per wave number. Our experimental results can provide insight for research in cold media.

Electromagnetically induced transparency using a vapor cell and a laser-cooled sample of cesium atoms

J. J. Clarke, William Arie van Wijngaarden, Hongxin Chen

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) was observed in a mismatched-wavelength cascade system using a room temperature vapor cell and laser-cooled atoms. A cw probe laser beam monitored the cesium ${6S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{6P}_{3/2}$ transition while another cw laser coupled the ${6P}_{3/2}$ state to a higher excited state. The ratio of the observed Rabi frequencies for coupling to the ${6P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(11--{13)D}_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions agreed closely with that predicted using the transition oscillator strengths. A comparison of the EIT signals obtained using cold atoms and the vapor cell is made.

Contrasts of electromagnetically-induced transparency in unperturbed and perturbed cold atoms of 87Rb

Hoon Yu, Mi Hyun Choi, Seung Jin Kim +1 more

We experimentally measured the relative contrast of an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) spectrum with two cw lasers in a Λ-type system of magneto-optically trapped 87 Rb atoms, which is a perturbed cold atomic medium. The contrast depends nonlinearly on the power of the coupling beam. Experimental results showed good agreement qualitatively with the simulation results considering the trapping magnetic field gradient, which induced detuning of the coupling laser. We used a free expanding cold atomic cloud that had a temperature of (36 ± 1) µK. To observe the EIT spectrum in the non-perturbed medium, we used two pulsed lasers. We observed that the relative contrast in the unperturbed medium was three times higher than that in the perturbed medium under our experimental conditions.

Observation of ultra-narrow electromagnetically induced transparency and slow light using purely electronic spins in a hot atomic vapor

Fabienne Goldfarb, J. Ghosh, M. David +6 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed in gaseous 4 He at room temperature. Ultra-narrow (less than 10 kHz) EIT windows are obtained for the first time for purely electronic spins in the presence of Doppler broadening. The positive role of collisions is emphasized through measurements of the power dependence of the EIT resonance. The measurement of slow light opens up possible ways to applications.
