Influence of an external field on the decay of coherently excited n=2 states of the hydrogen atom

Stanisław Chwirot, S. Łęgowski, J. A. Slevin +1 more

The authors analyse the validity of the approximation of neglecting the 2 2 S 1/2 -2 2 P 3/2 coupling in the description of the fluorescence from the n=2 states of hydrogen atoms decaying in the presence of an external electric field. The results show the inadequacy of such an approach and point to the need for a re-interpretation of some previously reported experimental values of the state multipoles of the collisionally excited n=2 hydrogen atoms.

Constant of motion for the hydrogen atom in an external field: a classical view

O J Campuzano-Cardona, H. N. Núñez‐Yépez, A. L. Salas‐Brito +1 more

Using the Hamilton vector, a well-known constant of motion of the unperturbed hydrogen atom, and simple classical mechanics, a scalar constant quantity for the hydrogen atom interacting with an external electric field is obtained. This constant quantity Omega is algebraically related to the Hamilton vector. Our purely classical analysis qualitatively reveals some observed properties of the corresponding quantum system.

One-dimensional giant dipole atoms

Munir Hasan Nayfeh, Dong-Yong Yao, Y. Ying +3 more

An external dc electric field imposed on highly excited atomic hydrogen is used to construct nearly one‐dimensional atoms which have enormous dipole moments and whose electric distribution is highly extended along the field. As the external field strength rises, the highly excited hydrogen atoms become less and less hydrogenetic. (AIP)
