Abstract

We investigate nonlinear excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates focusing on quasi one and two dimensional condensates. Different geometries of the external potential and effects of a spatial modulation of the interatomic interaction are studied. Our investigations incorporate the ground state and collective excitations of the condensate on a mean-field level by employing the Gross-Pitaevskii equation augmented by effective low-dimensional approaches. Firstly, we demonstrate the effects of a spatially inhomogeneous scattering length on quasi-one-dimensional condensates trapped in a double-well potential. The collisional inhomogeneity produces a saddle-node bifurcation scenario between two additional solution branches. Moreover, the threshold of transition from Josephson matter-wave oscillations to nonlinearly induced self-trapping is shifted due to the collisional inhomogeneity. We develop an adjusted two-mode model which describes these effects accurately. In a second step, the effects of a collisional inhomogeneity on dark and bright matter-wave solitons are explored. In both cases appropriate versions of the soliton perturbation theory are shown to accurately describe the soliton dynamics. Moreover, we illustrate that modulating the interaction can be used to stabilize vortices against excitations due to finite temperature effects. A second focal point of this thesis is the investigation of coherent excited states of Bose-Einstein condensates, i.e., solitonic and vortex states. The existence and stability of single and multiple dark soliton states in quasi-one-dimensional condensates trapped in a double-well potential and single as well as multiple vortex states in quasi-two-dimensional condensates are investigated systematically. We illustrate the connection of dark soliton stripes and multiple vortex states. Using a quasi-particle approach enables us to predict the motion of multiple solitons and vortices on an inhomogeneous background by simple ordinary differential equations. As an extension to the investigations of dark and bright solitons, we study dark bright solitons in two component Bose Einstein condensates. A strong dependence of the oscillation frequency and of the stability of the dark-bright soliton on the atom number of its components is found theoretically and has been verified experimentally as well. Moreover, methods for trapping of ultracold atoms are developed. We depict a way of trapping magnetically insensitive atoms by inter atomic collisions with atoms of the same species which are trapped magnetically. The controlled outcoupling of the trapped atoms by shaping the condensate's wave function is explored leading to a pulsed emission of atoms from the trapping region reminiscent of an atom laser. Moreover, we present a way of trapping atoms by applying near resonant laser light in a Raman configuration on a Ioffe-Pritchard like magnetic field configuration leading to versatile atom traps. The emerging potential surfaces are widely tunable and can be used for trapping two internal states.

Multi component Bose-Einstein condensates - From mean-field physics to strong correlations

C. R. Becker

During the last decade the physics of ultracold quantum gases has matured into a highly active and versatile field of research. Within the framework of this thesis experiments dedicated to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates have been performed and diverse phenomena, which are distinguished by fundamentally different regimes of interaction, could be investigated. For the first time the dynamical evolution of long-lived dark solitons has been studied as a paradigm of non-linear physics. Solitons, characterized as non-spreading wave packets, are stabilized against dispersion by a suitable non-linear interaction. It has been possible to observe oscillations of dark solitons in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates and good agreement with the theoretically predicted oscillation frequency has been obtained. Moreover experiments have been conducted which address the collision of two dark solitons distinguished by different depths. This particular feature enabled the identification of the individual solitons beyond the actual collision process and as a central result it could be shown, that these peculiar entities interpenetrate without significantly influencing each other. The theoretical description of solitons as weakly interacting quasi particles is in good agreement with these findings. Continuative studies on vectorial dark-bright solitons and their dynamical properties complement the investigations on dark solitons. A central goal of this dissertation has been the design and implementation of an optical lattice with an underlying triangular symmetry in order to investigate strongly correlated ultracold atoms in a novel experimental geometry. Exhibiting an explicit polarization dependence the optical lattice realized here should allow for the creation and analysis of thus far unexplored magnetic phases. Experiments attending to the quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott-insulating state in a three- as well as in a two-dimensional system with triangular symmetry have been performed. Similarities as well as differences to the findings obtained in cubic lattices have been worked out and could be attributed to the inherent differences in the crucial lattice parameters such as tunneling energy J and onsite interaction U. Devoted to the dynamics of spinor condensates, a third part of this thesis concerns the physics of multi component quantum gases. Employing suitable spin-independent trapping potentials the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates may be extended to the investigation of the static and dynamical properties of internal degrees of freedom, in this case the spin of the atoms. The measurements presented here concentrate on the coherent dynamical evolution of the vectorial order parameter of a spinor condensate. Rb condensates with F=1 and F=2 have been studied and the existence of a spin dynamics resonance, caused by the competition between spin-dependent non-linear interaction and quadratic Zeeman effect was demonstrated for the first time.

Dark-bright solitons and vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

Dong Yan

This dissertation focuses on the properties of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The fundamental model here is the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which is a mean-field description of BECs. The systematic analysis begins by considering the dark-bright (DB)-soliton interactions and multiple-dark-bright-soliton complexes in atomic two-component BECs. The interaction between two DB solitons in a homogeneous condensate and at the presence of the trap are both considered. Our analytical approximation relies in a Hamiltonian perturbation theory, which leads to an equation of motion of the centers of DB-soliton interacting pairs. Employing this equation, we demonstrate the existence of robust DB-soliton molecules, in the form of stationary two- and three-DB-soliton states. Also the equilibrium distance of the constituent solitons and the corresponding oscillation frequencies are found semianalytically, where the latter corresponds to the characteristic anomalous modes' eigenfrequencies that we numerically computed via a so called Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) linearization analysis. Those studies are discussed in Chapter 2. Then, we extend our studies to the dynamics of dark-bright (DB) solitons in binary BECs at finite temperature using a system of two-coupled dissipative GPs. We show that the effect of the bright soliton is to partially stabilize dark solitons against temperature-induced dissipation, thus providing longer lifetimes in Chapter 3. Furthermore, the dark-dark (DD) solitons as a prototypical coherent structure that emerges in two-component BECs are studied and are connected to dark-bright (DB) solitons via SO(2) rotation. We obtained their beating frequency and their frequency of oscillation inside a parabolic trap. They are identified as exact periodic orbits in the Manakov limit of equal inter- and intra- species nonlinearity strengths with and without the trap and we showcase the persistence of such states upon weak deviations from this limit. Also we investigated in detail the effect of the deviation from the Manakov case by considering different from unity scattering length ratios in Chapter 4. Next, we revisited Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems that typically arise in the linearization around a stationary state of a Hamiltonian nonlinear PDE. Also we presented a overview of the known facts for the eigenvalue counts of the corresponding unstable spectra. In particular, we focused on a straightforward plan to implement finite-dimensional techniques for locating this spectrum via the singular points of the meromorphic Krein Matrix and illustrated the value of the approach by considering realistic problems for recently observed experimentally multivortex and multisoliton solutions in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in Chapter 5. In the two dimensional scenario, we also examine the stability and dynamics of vortices under the effect of dissipation used as a simplified model for the inclusion of the effect of finite temperatures in atomic BECs, which enables an analytical prediction that can be compared directly to numerical results in Chapter 6. In all the above studies, our analytical prediction from the equation of motion are in good agreement with the numerical results from the BdG analysis.

Numerical studies of vortices and dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Nicholas Parker

Dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensates support intriguing macroscopic excitations in the form of quantized vortices and dark solitons. In this thesis we present extensive quantitative studies of the dynamics of these phenomena in the limit of zero temperature, performed by numerical simulation of the Gross- Pitaevskii equation. We show that vortices and dark solitons are inherently unstable to acceleration through the condensate, leading to the emission of sound waves. Indeed, for a single vortex/soliton, the power emitted is proportional to the square of the local acceleration. However, due to the finite size of the condensate, the vortex/soliton reinteracts with the emitted sound. This coupling has an important effect on the ensuing dynamics, and we illustrate how it can be engineered to induce net decay, stabilise, or even drive energy into the vortex/soliton. Under the harmonic confinement typically employed to trap the condensates, the acceleration-induced decay is stabilised by reabsorption of the emitted sound. However, by modifying the trap geometry, e.g. by adding an inner dimple in which the soliton resides or an optical lattice potential, it is possible to break this equilibrium and so induce a net decay of the vortex/soliton in a controllable manner. The decay rate can be considerable and should be observable under current experimental conditions. The dynamical stability of quantized vortices is also relevant to the field of turbulence in superfluid Helium, where the motion of the vortices is induced by the surrounding distribution of vortices rather than density. We extend these results to this field, and additionally consider the interactions between two and three vortices, which are also found to involve sound emission. By exciting the sound field of the condensate it is possible to drive parametrically energy into a dark soliton. In a real dissipative environment, this can be used to stabilise the soliton decay. Finally, we illustrate the links between dark solitons and vortices: a dark soliton embedded in a three-dimensional system is prone to decay into vortex rings, while a vortex in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry cannot be supported and exists as a hybrid between a vortex and dark soliton, known as a solitonic vortex.

Dynamics of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Guoxiang Huang, Jacob Szeftel, Shanhua Zhu

We develop a systematic analytical approach to consider the dynamics of linear and nonlinear excitations in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive atom-atom interactions. We show that, for a condensate strongly confined in two transverse directions, the ground state of the system involves the high-order eigenmodes of the transverse confining potential in the transverse directions and effective high-order Thomas-Fermi wave functions in the axial direction. The linear excitations of the system have a Bogoliubov-type spectrum with the excitation frequency varying slowly along the axial direction. We find that, in a weak nonlinear approximation, the amplitude of a nonlinear excitation is governed by a variable coefficient Korteweg--de Vries equation with additional terms contributed from the transverse structure and the inhomogeneity in the axial direction of the condensate, which results in varying amplitude, width, and velocity for dark solitons. Because of the inhomogeneity the dark solitons undergo deformation and emit radiations when traveling along the axial direction. We finally demonstrate that a dark soliton will disintegrate into several ones plus a residual wave train when passing over a steplike potential.
