Non-stationary and non-linear dispersive medium as external field which generates the squeezed states

Abstract

The theory of quantum effects in nonlinear dielectric media is developed. The nonlinear dielectric media is influenced by an external pumping field. The diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of a quantized field is obtained by the canonical Bogoliubov transformations. The transformations allow us to obtain the general expressions for the number of created photons and for the degree of squeezing. In the case of a plane pumping wave, for example, the results are calculated by using the zero order of the secular perturbation theory, with small parameters characterizing the medium nonlinearity. The Heisenberg equations of motion are obtained for non-stationary case and a commonly used Hamiltonian is derived from the first principles of quantum electrodynamics.

Squeezed-light generation in a medium governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Mary J. Potasek, Bernard Yurke

A first-order perturbation calculation is performed on a generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in order to investigate the degree of squeezing that can be obtained for a medium described by such a field theory. Expressions for the amount of squeezing in the normal and anomalous dispersion regimes are obtained. In particular, it is found that the amount of squeezing is greater in the anomalous dispersion region than in the normal dispersion region. By keeping fourth-order derivatives in the field, the squeezing when the pump is located at the zero-dispersion wavelength is also investigated.

An introduction to the quantum theory of nonlinear optics

Mark S. Hillery

An introduction to the quantum theory of nonlinear optics This article is provides an introduction to the quantum theory of optics in nonlinear dielectric media. We begin with a short summary of the classical theory of nonlinear optics, that is nonlinear optics done with classical fields. We then discuss the canonical formalism for fields and its quantization. This is applied to quantizing the electromagnetic field in free space. The definition of a nonclassical state of the electromagnetic field is presented, and several examples are examined. This is followed by a brief introduction to entanglement in the context of field modes. The next task is the quantization of the electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous, linear dielectric medium. Before going on to field quantization in nonlinear media, we discuss a number of commonly employed phenomenological models for quantum nonlinear optical processes. We then quantize the field in both nondispersive and dispersive nonlinear media. Flaws in the most commonly used methods of accomplishing this task are pointed out and discussed. Once the quantization has been completed, it is used to study a multimode theory of parametric down conversion and the propagation of quantum solitons.

Electromagnetic quantization in dispersive inhomogeneous nonlinear dielectrics

P. D. Drummond

A technique of canonical quantization in a general dispersive nonlinear dielectric medium is presented. The medium can be inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The fields are expanded in a slowly varying envelope approximation to allow quantization. An arbitrary number of envelopes is included, assuming lossless propagation in each relevant frequency band. The resulting Lagrangian and Hamiltonian agree with known propagation equations and expressions for the dispersive energy. The central result of the theory is an expansion of the quantum Hamiltonian in terms of annihilation and creation operators corresponding to group-velocity photon-polariton excitations in the dielectric.

Quantization of electrodynamics in nonlinear dielectric media

Mark S. Hillery, Leonard D. Mlodinow

We point out some problems with the usual quantum-mechanical theory of electrodynamics in nonlinear dielectric media which is used in nonlinear optics. In order to understand these problems, the Hamiltonian formulation of the theory is examined. It is found that many of the difficulties in the usual theory are a result of the fact that the canonical momentum for the interacting theory is not the same as that for the free electromagnetic field theory.

Quantized fields in a nonlinear dielectric medium: A microscopic approach

Mark S. Hillery, Leonard D. Mlodinow

Theories which have been used to describe the quantized electromagnetic field interacting with a nonlinear dielectric medium are either phenomenological or derived by quantizing the macroscopic Maxwell equations. Here we take a different approach and derive a Hamiltonian describing interacting fields from one which contains both field and matter degrees of freedom. The medium is modeled as a collection of two-level atoms, and these interact with the electromagnetic field. The atoms are grouped into effective spins and the the Holstein-Primakoff representation of the spin operators is used to expand them in inverse powers of the total spin. When the lowest order term of the interaction is combined with the free atomic and field Hamiltonians, a Hamiltonian describing a theory of noninteracting polaritons results. When higher order terms are expressed in terms of polariton operators standard nonlinear optical interactions emerge. These are then compared to the results of phenomenological and macroscopic theories. The theory is also used to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing counterpropagating modes in a nonlinear medium.

Radiation field quantization in a nonlinear dielectric with dispersion and absorption

Eduard Schmidt, Knoell, Ludwig, Welsch, Dirk-Gunnar

The problem of quantizing the radiation field inside a nonlinear dielectric is studied. Based on the quantization of radiation in a linear dielectric which includes absorption and dispersion, we extend the theory in order to treat also nonlinear optical processes. We derive propagation equations in space and time for the quantized radiation field including the effects of linear absorption and dispersion as well as nonlinear optical effects. As a special case we derive the propagation equation of a narrow-frequency band light pulse in a Kerr medium.
