Abstract

We study optical coherence properties and Stark-shift based broadening of the 1.53 /spl mu/m transition of an erbium doped telecommunication fiber. Our findings demonstrate its potential for quantum state storage as required for a quantum repeater.

Stress fluctuations and optical coherence of erbium in doped fibers

The optical coherence of erbium ion transitions in optical fibers may provide a basis for time-domain optical memory.’ The homogeneous lifetime at cryogenic temperatures is sufficiently long in erbium- doped silicate fibers that these effects can be observed in photon-echo experiments.1 The coherence at low temperatures is determined by defect conformational relaxation,2 and should depend strongly on the host matrix and the fabrication conditions, where the defect density can be controlled by the oxidation conditions and the stress.

Quantum memories for telecommunication networks

Björn Lauritzen

Quantum memories for light are the building blocks of quantum repeaters which would allow to extend the distance of quantum communication schemes far beyond what is feasible today. The implementation of a quantum memory at telecommunication-wavelength is of great interest in this context. A proof of principle experiment of such a device showing the storage and retrieval of light at the single photon level in an erbium doped solid was successfully carried out. Furthermore, important steps towards the implementation of a quantum memory with a high temporal multimode capacity and very long storage times were made. Besides the realization of light storage experiments, a study of the absorption structure of the rare-earth-ion-doped materials used was made and a spectral holeburning techniques were developped, allowing for memory experiments.

Coherent transient phenomena, particularly photon echoes, provide fundamental information on structure and dynamics of solids and provide the mechanism for time domain optical storage, signal routing, and processing.1 For these applications, materials are needed in the 1.5-μm telecommunications window, and erbium-doped crystals using the 4I15/2(1) → 4I13/2(1) transition are one important class of such materials.
