Dependence of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency on Laser Linewidth

Abstract

The influence of the linewidth of coupling laser on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectral width is theoretically investigated. The model to describe the EIT spectral width is based on the standard semi-classical theory. The result shows that the effect of the linewidth of coupling laser is equivalent to an additional relaxation between two ground states in the A-type configuration. A broadening linewidth of coupling laser implies the increasing relaxation between the two ground states, which will make the wider EIT spectral linewidth.

Phase control of linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency coupled by double fields

Xiaomin Feng, Lianshui Zhang, Lijun Yang +1 more

The effect of the relative phase on the spectral linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency is studied in a Λ-type three-level configuration coupled by double coupling fields and the result is presented in this paper. We show that the relative phase between the double coupling fields has a great degree of influence on the spectral width of electromagnetically induced transparency window. The linewidth can be controlled by changing the relative phase. Particularly, as the double coupling fields have opposite phases, the linewidth of EIT window can be extremely narrow distinctly.

From Laser Induced Line Narrowing To Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Doppler-Broadened System

Ali Javan, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Hwang Lee +1 more

Laser induced line narrowing effect in Doppler broadened systems was discovered thirty years ago. This effect can also be applied to recent experimental studies in high resolution spectroscopy or high precision measurements based on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). In this report we derive an analytic expression for the linewidth of EIT resonance in a Doppler broadened system. It is shown here that the EIT linewidth is proportional to the Rabi frequency of the driving field and is independent of the Doppler width in a limiting case. This recovers the result found in the laser induced line narrowing effect by Feld and Javan. In the other limit, we recovers the usual power broadening case where the EIT linewidth is proportional to the intensity of the driving field and inversely proportional to the Doppler width.

Power broadening of electromagnetically induced transparence resonance

Lijun Yang, Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li +3 more

The width of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is studied theoretically for an ideal three-level system in a L-type configuration. The optical Bloch equations are solved and the power broadening behavior of the EIT resonance is studied as a function of both couple and probe laser intensities over a broad range. It is shown that at relative low couple laser intensity there is a quadratic dependence of the EIT width on the couple laser Rabi frequency and at large couple laser intensity the EIT resonance evolve into the well known dynamic Stark splitting and its width has a linear dependence on the couple Rabi frequency. The dependence of the EIT width on the probe laser intensity shows different characteristics with the dependence on the couple laser intensity. Furthermore, the probe laser causes saturation and this is also discussed in this paper.

Narrowing of electromagnetically induced transparency resonance in a Doppler-broadened medium

Ali Javan, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Hwang Lee +1 more

We derive an analytic expression for the linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a Doppler-broadened system. It is shown here that for relatively low intensity of the driving field the EIT linewidth is proportional to the square root of intensity and is independent of the Doppler width, similar to the laser-induced line narrowing effect described by Feld and Javan. In the limit of high intensity we recover the usual power-broadening case where the EIT linewidth is proportional to the intensity and inversely proportional to the Doppler width.

Observation of linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency with temperature

Anju Pal, Ajay Wasan

The EIT linewidth plays an important role in high-precision spectroscopy. The EIT linewidth depends on the parameters like laser intensity, doppler broadening and atomic relaxation, etc. In this study, we have observed the dependence of EIT linewidth on the temperature in the D2 transition of 87Rb. The optical density increases with the increase of temperature, which has application in light storage [1], [2].
