Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the Stark effect of ultra-cold 39D cesium Rydberg atoms in low-field. The Stark structure of 39D Rydberg states is calculated numerically. The cold cesium atoms are excited to Rydberg states via two-step process and the Stark spectra are obtained by field-ionization method. The scalar and tenson polarizabilities of 39D cesium Rydberg atoms are measured to be α5/22=62(7) MHz·V-2cm2,α5/20=-146(13) MHz·V-2cm2, α3/22=73(6) MHz·V-2cm2,α3/20=-106(20) MHz·V-2cm2 respectively. The experimental values are in agreement with the theoretical results.

Precise measurements of polarizabilities of cesium nS Rydberg states in an ultra-cold atomic ensemble

Jingxu Bai, Suying Bai, Xiaoxuan Han +3 more

Abstract We present precise measurements of polarizabilities of cesium nS1/2 (n = 65–75) Rydberg states by Stark spectroscopies. In experiment, Rydberg atoms are excited via a two-photon scheme of a standard magneto-optical trap and detected by the field ionization technique. The Stark shift is measured by analysing the spectroscopy under an external electric field. The polarizability, α, is acquired by fitting the experimental data of Stark shifts with Δ W = − 1 2 α E 2 . The theoretical model is applied to numerically simulate the Stark map and corresponding level shifts, related deviation between the experimental measurements and calculations are less than 2%. The scaling law of polarizabilities, A ⋅ ( n * ) 7 + B ⋅ ( n * ) 6 (n* is effective principal quantum number), is attained, that shows a good agreement with the measurements.

Numerically Calculated Stark Structures of Cesium Rydberg Atom and Experimental Observation in an Ultracold Gas

Changyong Li, Ting Hao, Hao Zhang +5 more

The Stark structure of the cesium atom is calculated using parametric model potential, up-to-date quantum defects, and the same phase convention as that of conventional hydrogen. Using this phase convention makes the phase comparison between other atoms and the hydrogen atom more convenient. Experimental works are performed in an ultracold gas. The calculated Stark structures of the cesium atom for n =19 and 50D are in good agreement with our experimental results. The calculated transition probabilities for the Stark states near the n =19 are in good agreement with our observed spectra. The polarizabilities of the 50D components are measured and discussed in detail.

Measurement of Polarizability of CesiumnD State in Magneto-Optical Trap

Jianming Zhao, Hao Zhang, Zhigang Feng +4 more

The Stark spectrum of cesium n D ( n = 39–50) Rydberg atoms are obtained by a state-selective field ionization method in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The Stark shifts of Rydberg atoms are measured experimentally, the scalar and tensor polarizabilities of Rydberg atoms are obtained by fitting the experimental data, and the results are found to be in agreement with the existing theoretical calculations.

Measurement of lifetime of ultracold cesium Rydberg states

Zhigang Feng, Hao Zhang, Linjie Zhang +3 more

In this paper, the cold cesium atoms are excited to Rydberg states via two-photon transition and the ion signal of Rydberg atoms is obtained by the selective field-ionization method. The evolution of the 36D and 34S states population is acquired by changing delay time; the corresponding effective lifetimes are obtained by fitting the experimental data, which are in agreement with the existing theoretical results.

Stark spectra of Rydberg states in atomic cesium in the vicinity ofn= 18

Hui-Jie Dong, Ting Wang, Changyong Li +2 more

The Stark structures in a cesium atom around n = 18 are numerically calculated. The results show that the components of 20D states with a small azimuthal quantum number | m | shift upward a lot, and those with a large | m | shift downward a little within 1100 V/cm. All components of P states shift downward. Experimental work has been performed in ultracold atomic cesium. Atoms initially in 6P 3/2 state are excited to high- n Rydberg states by a polarization light perpendicular to the field, and Stark spectra with | m | = 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 are simultaneously observed with a large linewidth for the first time. The observed spectra are analyzed in detail. The relative transition probability is calculated. The experimental results are in good agreement with our numerical computation.

Precision Stark spectroscopy of the fine structure of the microwave transition 37P-37S in sodium Rydberg atoms

Igor M. Beterov, I. I. Ryabtsev

The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of the fine structure of the spectrum of the microwave transition 37 P -37 S in sodium Rydberg atoms in a weak electric field are reported. New data are obtained on the experimental values of the scalar and tensor polarizabilities of the 37 P level. A numerical simulation of the Stark diagram, taking into account the influence of the anticrossings of the Rydberg levels, is performed, and the results are found to be in good agreement with experiment.
