Abstract

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) of periodic chains are determined by real Bloch momenta. We identify non-Bloch DQPTs, which occur only in open chains and are determined by complex momenta instead. They arise in a Hermitian chain coupled to a simple substrate, whose memory is treated exactly, and originate from the point-gap winding number $W$ of the projected propagator: for $W\neq0$, open boundaries change both the dynamical free energy and the critical times, even in the thermodynamic limit. We find that both follow from an analytic continuation to complex momenta, and show that $W$ can be measured by particle counting. This reveals a dynamical bulk-boundary correspondence, in which non-Hermitian topology emerges from Hermitian dynamics with memory.

AI Summary

Can boundaries change a dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) in the thermodynamic limit, and can bulk topology determine when they do? This paper studies a Hermitian, time-reversal-breaking SSH chain coupled to a semi-infinite substrate, retaining the substrate’s memory exactly. The relevant amplitude is $\mathcal D(t)=\det U_S(t)$, with $U_S$ the propagator projected onto the chain; for initially filled, noninteracting fermions on the chain, it is also the many-body Loschmidt amplitude. For the parameter set studied, the open- and periodic-boundary dynamical free energies coincide when the point-gap winding $W$ of $\det U_S(k,t)$ vanishes, despite a skin effect, but differ when $W\ne0$. Periodic-boundary DQPTs at $gt\simeq1.67,3.80,7.05$ disappear under open boundaries. A new open-boundary transition occurs at $gt_p\simeq2.83$, determined by complex momentum with imaginary shift $\mu_p\simeq-0.581$. Analytically continuing the periodic propagator to a zero-winding contour reproduces the open-boundary rate; closure of the zero-winding plateau produces its kink. Fisher-zero calculations and finite-chain extrapolations support this construction. A proposed particle-counting protocol measures $W$ through conditional charge transfer after postselecting a locally restored occupation pattern. Numerically, the correct charge occurs with probability $0.991$ for a four-cell window at $gt=2.5$, but postselection becomes exponentially costly with window size. The study treats one noninteracting model and parameter set; the open-boundary prescription is numerically supported rather than generally proved. Finite-size rounding and exponentially small singular values limit extrapolation near the transition. Experimental tests and interacting extensions remain proposals.

Central claim may not hold: The central OBC complex-momentum identity is a numerically supported prescription for the displayed model and parameter set, without a derivation establishing its validity or general applicability. The stated 10^−3 open-chain extrapolation accuracy excludes the neighborhood of the proposed non-Bloch transition, leaving its thermodynamic nonanalyticity less directly validated than the rates away from it.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian lattices

Longwen Zhou, Qinghai Wang, Hailong Wang +1 more

In closed quantum systems, dynamical phase transitions are identified by the nonanalytic behavior of the return probability as a function of time. In this work, we study the nonunitary dynamics following quenches across exceptional points in a non-Hermitian lattice realizable by optical resonators. Dynamical quantum phase transitions with topological signatures are found when an isolated exceptional point is crossed during the quench. A winding number defined by a real, noncyclic geometric phase is introduced, whose value features quantized jumps at critical times of these phase transitions and remains constant elsewhere, playing the role of a topological order parameter. This work provides a simple framework to study dynamical and topological quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems.

Non-Hermitian topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions: a generic connection

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Abstract The dynamical and topological properties of non-Hermitian systems have attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we establish an intrinsic connection between two classes of intriguing phenomena—topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs)—in non-Hermitian systems. Focusing on one-dimensional models with chiral symmetry, we find DQPTs following the quench from a trivial to a non-Hermitian topological phase. Moreover, the critical momenta and critical time of the DQPTs are found to be directly related to the topological invariants of the non-Hermitian system. We further demonstrate our theory in three prototypical non-Hermitian lattice models, the lossy Kitaev chain (LKC), the LKC with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings, and the nonreciprocal Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. Finally, we suggest a proposal to experimentally verify the found connection by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.

A dynamical bulk-boundary correspondence in two dimensional topological matter

Tomasz Masłowski, Jesko Sirker, Nicholas Sedlmayr

Abstract We provide strong numerical evidence for a dynamical bulk-boundary correspondence in two-dimensional topological matter which manifests itself as boundary contributions to the dynamical free energy and is governed by a two-dimensional non-Hermitian dynamical Loschmidt matrix—a setting largely unexplored beyond one dimension. Following a quantum quench, in-gap bands emerge in the spectrum of the Loschmidt matrix between successive dynamical quantum phase transitions when the time-evolving Hamiltonian is topological, while they are absent for quenches into the trivial phase in all cases we have studied. By fitting these in-gap bands, we show that they account for the observed boundary contributions to the dynamical free energy thus supporting a direct connection between the spectrum of a non-Hermitian dynamical matrix and topological boundary contributions. Taken together with earlier studies of the one-dimensional case, our results provide a framework to understand and classify dynamical topological phenomena based on the spectral properties of certain non-Hermitian matrices.

Self-normal and biorthogonal dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian quantum walks

Haiting Zhang, Kunkun Wang, Lei Xiao +1 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), characterized by non-analytic behavior in rate function and abrupt changes in dynamic topological order parameters (DTOPs) over time, have garnered enormous attention in recent decades. However, in non-Hermitian systems, the special biorthogonality of the bases makes the definition of DQPTs complex. In this work, we delve into the comprehensive investigation of self-normal DQPTs (originally used in Hermitian systems) to compare them with their biorthogonal counterpart, within the context of non-Hermitian quantum walks (QWs). We present a detailed analysis of the behaviors of Loschmidt rate functions and DTOPs under these two distinct theoretical approaches. While both self-normal and biorthogonal methods can be used to detect DQPTs in quench dynamics between different topological phases, we theoretically present their differences in the definition of critical momenta and critical times by analyzing the Fisher zeros and fixed points. Finally, we present an experiment that observes both types of DQPTs using one-dimensional discrete-time QWs with single photons.

Biorthogonal-only Floquet Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions

Jiangrong Wen, Qidong Yuan, Zi-Xiang Hu +1 more

Non-Hermitian dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are intrinsically sensitive to the choice of inner product under nonunitary time evolution. Although the biorthogonal formulation based on associated states provides a normalized Loschmidt echo with a probabilistic interpretation, previous studies have found biorthogonal and self-normal DQPTs to occur in the same parameter regimes, suggesting that the two forms of dynamical criticality are concomitant. Here we demonstrate that this is not the case. In an exactly solvable periodically driven non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, we uncover a finite biorthogonal-only Floquet DQPT regime, where the biorthogonal Loschmidt rate becomes nonanalytic while the self-normal Loschmidt rate remains smooth. The critical conditions are obtained analytically, showing that the onset of biorthogonal Floquet DQPTs is locked to the exceptional lines of the effective Floquet Hamiltonian, whereas self-normal criticality has no corresponding spectral boundary. Moreover, for each critical momentum, the biorthogonal DQPT exhibits a pair of critical times within every driving period, whereas the self-normal DQPT exhibits only one. Our results establish a fundamental distinction between biorthogonal and self-normal DQPTs, thereby opening a route toward new nonequilibrium quantum phenomena in non-Hermitian systems.

Origin and classification of fractional dynamical topology in non-Hermitian quantum systems

Zimiao Zhang, Li Chen, Weilun Jiang +1 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPT) provide a fundamental framework for characterizing nonequilibrium critical phenomena, and have recently been extended to non-Hermitian systems. Half-integer jumps of the dynamical topological order parameter can arise in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems, yet their origin in non-Hermitian settings remains unclear. Here, we investigate DQPTs in a two-band non-Hermitian model and show that these fractional jumps originate from the discontinuity in the complex energy spectrum. We demonstrate that this behavior is intrinsically linked to the steady-state phase diagram of the quench Hamiltonian, and also classify the occurrence of DQPT. We further extend our analysis to the multiband Hamiltonian and the two-dimensional model, providing a unified understanding of fractional dynamical topological signatures.
