Abstract

We construct a quantum theory of light in nonlinearly responding materials with dispersion and absorption and, in particular, show the emergence of non-Gaussian noise associated with nonlinear absorption processes. Our theory is based on a path-integral formulation of the microscopic Huttner-Barnett model including cubic matter self-interaction required for $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear processes. We show that the noise polarization emerges naturally from a decoupling of the stochastic weights of the bath response which, in case of cubic self-interactions, leads to a decoupling via Airy functions. As the theory is, by construction, consistent with the nonlinear fluctuation-dissipation theorem, it constitutes a viable quantum theory of light in nonlinear media.

Quantum Theory of Light and Noise Polarization in Nonlinear Optics

We present a consistent quantum theory of the electromagnetic field in nonlinearly responding causal media, with special emphasis on Chi(2) media. Starting from QED in linearly responding causal media, we develop a method to construct the cubic Hamiltonian expressed in terms of the complex nonlinear susceptibility in a quantum mechanically consistent way. In particular, we show that the method yields the nonlinear noise polarization, which together with the linear one is responsible for intrinsic quantum decoherence.

Path integral quantization of the electromagnetic field in nonlinear dielectric materials

Arman Kashef, Oscar Perearnau Herrero, Alexander Szameit +2 more

We construct a quantum theory of light in nonlinear dielectric media with dispersion and absorption. We employ a mesoscopic model for the light-matter interaction that include a fourth-order nonlinearity in the material response. Quantization is performed by constructing an effective action in a path-integral formalism by integrating out matter and bath degrees of freedom. We show how a nonlinear response function associated with Kerr nonlinearity is obtained through the model and, after full field quantization, we derive the Feynman rules from this theory.

Quantum theory of light in nonlinear media with dispersion and absorption

Eduard Schmidt, John Jeffers, Stephen Mark Barnett +2 more

We present a canonical quantum theory of radiation in nonlinear media taking into account the effects of linear dispersion and absorption in a consistent way. We start from a microscopic model and apply recently developed concepts of the quantization of radiation in dispersive and absorbing linear media and extend the theory in order to include nonlinear optical processes. We derive propagation equations in space and time for the quantized radiation field, with special emphasis on the propagation of quantum-light pulses in Kerr media. In particular, the method enables us to derive systematically the noise sources that arise naturally in the nonlinear terms.

Causal nonlinear quantum optics

Stefan Scheel, D.‐G. Welsch

We present a quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in locally responding nonlinear dielectric materials with dispersion and absorption. Based on the Green tensor expansion of the macroscopic electromagnetic field, we derive an expression for the nonlinear polarization that contains, besides the reactive part which is responsible for the nonlinear interaction, a noise contribution that has hitherto been disregarded. For the process of third-harmonic generation, we find that the magnitude of the nonlinear noise polarization is proportional to the intensity of the pump fields.

Emergence of non-Gaussian coherent states through nonlinear interactions

Mariano Uria, Alejandra Maldonado-Trapp, Carla Hermann-Avigliano +1 more

Light-matter interactions that are nonlinear with respect to the photon number reveal the quantum nature of coherent states. We characterize how coherent states depart from Gaussian by the emergence of negative values in their Wigner function during the evolution while maintaining their characteristic Poissonian photon statistics. Such states have nonminimum uncertainty yet present a metrological advantage that can reach the Heisenberg limit. Non-Gaussianity of light arises as a general property of nonlinear interactions, which only requires a polarizable media, resonant or dispersive. Our results highlight how useful quantum features can be extracted from the seemingly most classical states of light, a relevant phenomenon for quantum optics applications.

Quantum Brownian motion with non-Gaussian noises: Fluctuation-Dissipation Relation and nonlinear Langevin equation

Hing-Tong Cho, Bei-Lok Hu

Building upon the work of Hu, Paz, and Zhang [1,2] on open quantum systems we consider the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) model with one oscillator (position variable $x$) as the system, {\it nonlinearly} coupled to an environment of $N$ harmonic oscillators (with mass $m_n$, natural frequency $ω_n$, position $q_n$ and momentum $p_n$ variables) in the form $\sum_{n}\left(v_{n1}(x)q_{n}^{k}+v_{n2}(x)p_{n}^{l}\right)$ where $k, l$ are integers (the present work only considers the $k=l=2$ cases). The vertex functions $v_{n1}, v_{n2} $ are of the form $v_{n1}=λC_{n1} f(x), v_{n2}(x)=-λ\,C_{n2}m_{n}^{-2}ω_{n}^{-2}f(x)$ where $C_{n1,2}$ are the coupling constants with the $n$th oscillator, $f(x)$ is any arbitrary function of $x$, and $λ$ is a dimensionless constant. Employing the closed-time-path formalism the influence action $S_{IF}$ is calculated using a perturbative expansion in $λ$. It is possible to identify the terms in $S_{IF}$ quadratic or higher in $Δ(s)\equiv f(x_{+}(s))-f(x_{-}(s))$ to constitute the noise kernel, while terms linear in $Δ$ to that of the dissipation kernel. The non-Gaussian noise kernel gives rise to non-zero three-point correlation function of the corresponding stochastic force. The pathway presented here should be useful for the exploration of \textit{non-Gaussian properties of systems nonlinearly coupled with their environments}; examples in early universe cosmology and in quantum optomechanics (QOM) are mentioned. A modified fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) is also established, which ensures the consistency of the model and the accuracy of results even at higher perturbative orders. Another result of significance is the derivation of a nonlinear Langevin equation which is expected to be useful for many open quantum system applications.
