Abstract

Building upon the work of Hu, Paz, and Zhang [1,2] on open quantum systems we consider the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) model with one oscillator (position variable $x$) as the system, {\it nonlinearly} coupled to an environment of $N$ harmonic oscillators (with mass $m_n$, natural frequency $ω_n$, position $q_n$ and momentum $p_n$ variables) in the form $\sum_{n}\left(v_{n1}(x)q_{n}^{k}+v_{n2}(x)p_{n}^{l}\right)$ where $k, l$ are integers (the present work only considers the $k=l=2$ cases). The vertex functions $v_{n1}, v_{n2} $ are of the form $v_{n1}=λC_{n1} f(x), v_{n2}(x)=-λ\,C_{n2}m_{n}^{-2}ω_{n}^{-2}f(x)$ where $C_{n1,2}$ are the coupling constants with the $n$th oscillator, $f(x)$ is any arbitrary function of $x$, and $λ$ is a dimensionless constant. Employing the closed-time-path formalism the influence action $S_{IF}$ is calculated using a perturbative expansion in $λ$. It is possible to identify the terms in $S_{IF}$ quadratic or higher in $Δ(s)\equiv f(x_{+}(s))-f(x_{-}(s))$ to constitute the noise kernel, while terms linear in $Δ$ to that of the dissipation kernel. The non-Gaussian noise kernel gives rise to non-zero three-point correlation function of the corresponding stochastic force. The pathway presented here should be useful for the exploration of \textit{non-Gaussian properties of systems nonlinearly coupled with their environments}; examples in early universe cosmology and in quantum optomechanics (QOM) are mentioned. A modified fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) is also established, which ensures the consistency of the model and the accuracy of results even at higher perturbative orders. Another result of significance is the derivation of a nonlinear Langevin equation which is expected to be useful for many open quantum system applications.

General quantum Brownian motion with initially correlated and nonlinearly coupled environment

Subhashish Banerjee, Rupamanjari Ghosh

The dynamics of an open quantum system exhibiting the quantum Brownian motion is analyzed when the coupling between the system and its environment is nonlinear, and the system and the reservoir are initially correlated. For couplings quadratic in the environment variables, the influence functional for the system is obtained perturbatively up to second order in the coupling constant, and then the propagator is explicitly evaluated when the particle is under the influence of a harmonic potential and an additional anharmonic potential, the so-called washboard potential. As an application of the propagator, the master equation and the Wigner equation are obtained for the quantum Brownian particle moving in a harmonic potential for the generalized correlated initial condition, and then for the specific case of the simplified "thermal" initial condition. The system is shown to obey the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation theorem.

Non-Markovian expansion in quantum dissipative systems

Eduardo Souza Fraga, Gastão I. Krein, L. F. Palhares

We consider the non-Markovian Langevin evolution of a dissipative dynamical system in quantum mechanics in the path integral formalism. After discussing the role of the frequency cutoff for the interaction of the system with the heat bath and the kernel and noise correlator that follow from the most common choices, we derive an analytic expansion for the exact non-Markovian dissipation kernel and the corresponding colored noise in the general case that is consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and incorporates systematically non-local corrections. We illustrate the modifications to results obtained using the traditional (Markovian) Langevin approach in the case of the exponential kernel and analyze the case of the non-Markovian Brownian motion.

Non- Markovian Quantum Stochastic Equation For Two Coupled Oscillators

E.X. Alpomishev, Z. Kanokov

The system of nonlinear Langevin equations was obtained by using Hamiltonian's operator of two coupling quantum oscillators which are interacting with heat bath. By using the analytical solution of these equations, the analytical expressions for transport coefficients was found. Generalized Langevin equations and fluctuation-dissipation relations are derived for the case of a nonlinear non-Markovian noise. The explicit expressions for the time-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients are presented for the case of linear couplings in the coordinate between the collective two coupled harmonic oscillators and heat bath.

Dissipative dynamics of a particle coupled to a field via internal degrees of freedom

Kanu Sinha, A. López, Yiğit Subaşı

We study the nonequilibrium dissipative dynamics of the center of mass of a particle coupled to a field via its internal degrees of freedom. We model the internal and external degrees of freedom of the particle as quantum harmonic oscillators in $1+1\text{ }\mathrm{D}$, with the internal oscillator coupled to a scalar quantum field at the center of mass position. Such a coupling results in a nonlinear interaction between the three pertinent degrees of freedom---the center of mass, internal degree of freedom, and the field. It is typically assumed that the internal dynamics is decoupled from that of the center of mass owing to their disparate characteristic timescales. Here we use an influence functional approach that allows one to account for the self-consistent backaction of the different degrees of freedom on each other, including the coupled nonequilibrium dynamics of the internal degree of freedom and the field, and their influence on the dissipation and noise of the center of mass. Considering a weak nonlinear interaction term, we employ a perturbative generating functional approach to derive a second order effective action and a corresponding quantum Langevin equation describing the non-equilibrium dynamics of the center of mass. We analyze the resulting dissipation and noise arising from the field and the internal degree of freedom as a composite environment. Furthermore, we establish a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation for the late-time dissipation and noise kernels. Our results are pertinent to open quantum systems that possess intermediary degrees of freedom between system and environment, such as in the case of optomechanical interactions.

Quantum Langevin Dynamics

Mohammad Attrash, Roi Baer

Previous years researchers began to simulate open quantum system, taking into account the interaction between system and the environment. One approach to deal with this problem is to use the density matrix within the Liouville-von-Neumann formalism or the Markovian variant the Lindblad equations. Another way is to use a stochastic approach where a random force is added to the system. The benefit of the stochastic approach is to solve the dynamics of the system with less time and memory than the density matrix approaches. In this project we want to develop a stochastic approach that can deal with the stochastic wave functions approach. We did this on a 2-level system and found that it works well when comparing to a density matrix approach. Next, we tested a quantum particle connect to a bath of harmonic oscillators using the stochastic approach. We found that a friction term is necessary and applied it. Like in the classical Langevin equations the friction constant and the random force fluctuations are related by the fluctuation-dissipation constant. We showed that with friction the dynamics decays to an ensemble with energy of $E_{gs}+k_BT$. However, we also found here are problems. The system seems to absorb energy indefinitely if the temperature is higher than the zero point energy or if the system is a Morse oscillator. Thus more research is required to make this method work.
