The dynamics of an open quantum system exhibiting the quantum Brownian motion is analyzed when the coupling between the system and its environment is nonlinear, and the system and the reservoir are initially correlated. For couplings quadratic in the environment variables, the influence functional for the system is obtained perturbatively up to second order in the coupling constant, and then the propagator is explicitly evaluated when the particle is under the influence of a harmonic potential and an additional anharmonic potential, the so-called washboard potential. As an application of the propagator, the master equation and the Wigner equation are obtained for the quantum Brownian particle moving in a harmonic potential for the generalized correlated initial condition, and then for the specific case of the simplified "thermal" initial condition. The system is shown to obey the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation theorem.
We develop a perturbation scheme to treat the dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle (coordinate
x) coupled nonlinearly to a bath of oscillators (coordinates
qn) with an interaction action in the form $\ensuremath{\lambda}f(x){q}_{n}^{k}$. We derive the influence functionals for the
k=2,3,4 cases to order ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{2}$ and derive the master equations for the special cases of local dissipation and white noise, as well as the general cases of nonlocal dissipation and colored noise for
f(x)=xandx2. We show that a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation exists between the
lth-order noise kernels of the
kth-order coupling and their corresponding dissipation kernels.
Building upon the work of Hu, Paz, and Zhang [1,2] on open quantum systems we consider the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) model with one oscillator (position variable
x) as the system, {\it nonlinearly} coupled to an environment of
N harmonic oscillators (with mass
mn, natural frequency
ωn, position
qn and momentum
pn variables) in the form
∑n(vn1(x)qnk+vn2(x)pnl) where
k,l are integers (the present work only considers the
k=l=2 cases). The vertex functions $v_{n1}, v_{n2} $ are of the form
vn1=λCn1f(x),vn2(x)=−λCn2mn−2ωn−2f(x) where
Cn1,2 are the coupling constants with the
nth oscillator,
f(x) is any arbitrary function of
x, and
λ is a dimensionless constant. Employing the closed-time-path formalism the influence action
SIF is calculated using a perturbative expansion in
λ. It is possible to identify the terms in
SIF quadratic or higher in
Δ(s)≡f(x+(s))−f(x−(s)) to constitute the noise kernel, while terms linear in
Δ to that of the dissipation kernel. The non-Gaussian noise kernel gives rise to non-zero three-point correlation function of the corresponding stochastic force. The pathway presented here should be useful for the exploration of \textit{non-Gaussian properties of systems nonlinearly coupled with their environments}; examples in early universe cosmology and in quantum optomechanics (QOM) are mentioned. A modified fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) is also established, which ensures the consistency of the model and the accuracy of results even at higher perturbative orders. Another result of significance is the derivation of a nonlinear Langevin equation which is expected to be useful for many open quantum system applications.
We analyze the microscopic model of quantum Brownian motion, describing a Brownian particle interacting with a bosonic bath through a coupling which is linear in the creation and annihilation operators of the bath, but may be a nonlinear function of the position of the particle. Physically, this corresponds to a configuration in which damping and diffusion are spatially inhomogeneous. We derive systematically the quantum master equation for the Brownian particle in the Born-Markov approximation and we discuss the appearance of additional terms, for various polynomials forms of the coupling. We discuss the cases of linear and quadratic coupling in great detail and we derive, using Wigner function techniques, the stationary solutions of the master equation for a Brownian particle in a harmonic trapping potential. We predict quite generally Gaussian stationary states, and we compute the aspect ratio and the spread of the distributions. In particular, we find that these solutions may be squeezed (superlocalized) with respect to the position of the Brownian particle. We analyze various restrictions to the validity of our theory posed by non-Markovian effects and by the Heisenberg principle. We further study the dynamical stability of the system, by applying a Gaussian approximation to the time-dependent Wigner function, and we compute the decoherence rates of coherent quantum superpositions in position space. Finally, we propose a possible experimental realization of the physics discussed here, by considering an impurity particle embedded in a degenerate quantum gas.
In this paper we generalize the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) to include the momentum-dependent system-environment couplings. The resulting Hamiltonian in the particle number representation is given by ${H}_{t}ot=\ensuremath{\hbar}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{S}}{a}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}a+{\ensuremath{\sum}}_{k}\ensuremath{\hbar}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{k}{b}_{k}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{b}_{k}+{\ensuremath{\sum}}_{k}\ensuremath{\hbar}({V}_{k}{a}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{b}_{k}+{V}_{k}^{*}{b}_{k}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}a)+{\ensuremath{\sum}}_{k}\ensuremath{\hbar}({W}_{k}{a}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{b}_{k}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}+{W}_{k}^{*}{b}_{k}a)$. The conventional QBM model corresponds to the special case
Wk=Vk. The generalized QBM can capture more physical applications because the single-particle transition and the two-particle pair production between the system and the environment represent two very different physical processes that usually do not have the same coupling strengths. We discuss the physical realizations of the generalized QBM in different physical systems, and derive its exact master equation for both the initial decoupled states and initial correlated states. The Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation of the conventional QBM model is reproduced as a special case. We find that the renormalized system Hamiltonian after tracing out all the environmental states induced naturally a momentum-dependent potential, which shows the consistency of including the momentum-dependent coupling in the QBM Hamiltonian. In the Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation, such a renormalized potential is misplaced so that the correct renormalization Hamiltonian has not been found. With the exact master equation for both the initial decoupled and initial correlated states, the issues about the initial jolt are also reexamined. We find that the so-called ``initial jolt,'' which has been thought to be an artificial effect due to the use of the initial decoupled system-environment states, has nothing to do with the initial decoupled state. The exact master equation for the generalized QBM also has potential applications to photonics quantum computing.
Open Quantum Brownian Motion (OQBM) is a new class of quantum Brownian motion in which the dynamics of the Brownian particle depend not only on interactions with a thermal environment but also on the state of its internal degrees of freedom. For an Ohmic bath spectral density with a Lorentz--Drude cutoff frequency at a high-temperature limit, we derive the Born--Markov master equation for the reduced density matrix of an open Brownian particle in a harmonic potential. The resulting master equation is written in phase-space representation using the Wigner function, and due to the separation of associated timescales in the high-damping limit, we perform adiabatic elimination of the momentum variable to obtain OQBM. We numerically solve the derived master equation for the reduced density matrix of the OQBM, using both Gaussian and non-Gaussian initial distributions. In each case, the OQBM dynamics converge to several Gaussian distributions. To gain physical insight into the studied system, we also plotted the dynamics of the off-diagonal element of the open quantum Brownian particle and found damped coherent oscillations. Finally, we investigated the time-dependent variance in the position of the OQBM walker and observed initial diffusive spreading, followed by a crossover to a finite steady-state value.
Open Quantum Brownian Motion (OQBM) was introduced as a scaling limit of discrete-time open quantum walks. This limit defines a new class of quantum Brownian motion, which incorporates both the external and internal degrees of freedom of the Brownian particle. We consider a weakly driven Brownian particle confined in a harmonic potential and dissipatively coupled to a thermal bath. Applying the rotating wave approximation (RWA) to the system-bath interaction Hamiltonian, we derive a completely positive Born-Markov master equation for the reduced dynamics. We express the resulting master equation in the coordinate representation and, utilizing the adiabatic elimination of fast variables, derive a completely positive hybrid quantum-classical master equation that defines OQBM. We illustrate the resulting dynamics using examples of initial Gaussian and non-Gaussian distributions of the OQBM walker. Both examples reveal the emergence of Gaussian distributions in the limiting behavior of the OQBM dynamics, which closely matches that of the standard OQBM. With the help of the obtained OQBM master equation, we derive the equations for the
n-th moments and the cumulants of the position distribution of the open Brownian walker. We subsequently solve these equations numerically for Gaussian initial distributions across various parameter regimes. Notably, we find that the third-order cumulant is nonzero, indicating that the dynamics' intrinsic generator is non-Gaussian.
