Abstract We study the dynamics of non-relativistic fermions in
Rd R d interacting through a pair potential. Employing methods developed by Buchholz in the framework of resolvent algebras, we consider an extension of the CAR algebra where the dynamics acts as a group of
∗ ∗ -automorphisms, which are continuous in time in all sectors for fixed particle numbers. In addition, we construct a
C∗ C ∗ -dynamical system by identifying a suitable dense subalgebra. Finally, we briefly discuss how this framework could be used to construct KMS states in the future.
Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS)-like models for permutation invariant electronic interactions are investigated in terms of recent rigorous mean-field methods. Their limiting dynamics is constructed in the Heisenberg picture on (extensions of) the full canonical commutation relation (CAR) algebra and also restricted to (extensions of) the pair algebra. The classical part of the proper BCS dynamics on the CAR algebra is shown to exhibit 15 macroscopic collective variables, the time dependence of which is explicitly integrated and discussed.
Even though its classical equations of motion are then left invariant, when an action is redefined by an additive total derivative or divergence term (in time, in the case of a mechanical system) such a transformation induces non-trivial consequences for the system’s canonical phase space formulation. This is even more true and then in more subtle ways for the canonically quantized dynamics, with, in particular, an induced transformation in the unitary configuration space representation of the Heisenberg algebra being used for the quantum system. When coupled to a background gauge field, such considerations become crucial for a proper understanding of the consequences for the system’s quantum dynamics of gauge transformations of that classical external background gauge field, while under such transformations, the system’s degrees of freedom, abstract quantum states and quantum dynamics are certainly strictly invariant. After a detailed analysis of these different points in a general context, these are then illustrated specifically in the case of the quantum Landau problem with its classical external background magnetic vector potential for which the most general possible parametrized gauge choice is implemented herein. The latter discussion aims as well to clarify some perplexing statements in the literature regarding the status of gauge choices to be made for the magnetic vector potential for that quantum system. The role of the global spacetime symmetries of the Landau problem and their gauge invariant Noether charges is then also emphasized.
A dynamics (i.e. a one-parameter group of automorphisms) of a system described by a C *-algebra with a local structure in terms of C *-subalgebras A ( I ) for local domains I of the physical space (a discrete lattice) is normally constructed out of potentials P ( I ), each of which is a self-adjoint element of the subalgebra A ( I ), such that the the first time derivative of the dynamical change of any local observable A is i times the convergent sum of the commutator [ P ( I ), A ] over all finite regions I . We will invert this relation under the assumption (obviously assumed in the usual approach) that local observables all have the first time derivative, i.e. we prove the existence of potentials for any given dynamics satisfying the above-stated condition. Furthermore, by imposing a further condition for the potential P ( I ) to be chosen for each I that it does not have a portion which can be shifted to potentials for any proper subset of I , we also show (1) the existence, (2) uniqueness, (3) an automatic convergence property for the sum over I , and (4) a quite convenient property for the chosen potential. The so-obtained properties (3) and (4) are not assumed and are very useful, though they were never noticed nor used before. We consider a system of finite kinds of finite spins and fermions on a discrete lattice, local regions being all finite subsets of the lattice and all local algebras being full matrix algebras of finite dimensions. For all dynamics for which all elements of any local algebra is once time differentiable, we prove that there exist a system of potentials which describe the time derivative of the given dynamics by a convergent sum stated above. The fundamental technique for finding such potentials is a non-commutative expectation which is defined on the basis of a product state of the algebra. For each choice of a product state, we obtain one expectation which produces one set of potentials, all of which satisfy what we call the standardness condition and the convergence condition. We call this family of potentials standard potentials (corresponding to any specific choice of the product state). The standard potentials corresponding to different product states are different but produces the same time derivative, known as equivalent potentials.
In a previous paper we began our analysis on the role of non self-adjoint Hamiltonians in connection with the Heisenberg dynamics for quantum systems. Here, motivated by the growing interest on this topic and on some recent results on dynamical systems, we continue this analysis focusing on what we believe is an unexplored (or, at least, not so explored! aspect of Heisenberg dynamics, related to the need for using vectors which are {\em brute-force normalized}. Our main interest is on conserved quantities, and on conditions which guarantee that some observables of the system, or their mean values, do not evolve in time.
Let
H1 be a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space. Let
ψ↦Z(ψ) be a canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR) field over
H1 acting irreducibly on a Hilbert space
K. The
∗-algebra
AH1 generated by the
Z(ψ),
ψ∈H1, is simply all operators on
K. However, the CAR field endows
AH1 with additional structure, and we are concerned with quantum operations acting in harmony with this structure. In particular, there is a "gauge" automorphism group generated by "second quantizing''
ψ↦eitψ. The fixed point algebra of the gauge group,
GH1, is a sub-algebra of
AH1 studied by Araki and Wyss. It contains the density matrices of an important class of states, the {\em gauge invariant Gaussian states},
SGIG.
Our focus is on semigroups
{etL}t≥0 of quantum operations on
AH1 that map
SGIG into itself. Each
etL is one-to-one, and our first main result is a structure theorem for such quantum operations on
GH1 that map
SGIG into itself.
We apply this to study semigroups of quantum operations on
GH1 that map
SGIG into itself. Our second main result is a structure theorem showing that they are parameterized by pairs
(G,A) where
G is a contraction semigroup generator on
H1, and
0≤A≤−G−G∗. We then show that each of these semigroups has a natural extension to the full CAR algebra
AH1. Further results are obtained under further assumptions on the pair
(G,A).
